Hawken closed beta set for later this month

Session to last for four days, from October 26 to October 29.

by

Publisher Meteor Entertainment has announced the closed beta dates for its upcoming free-to-play mech shooter Hawken.

Get cracking with mechas in late October.

The game will be in closed-beta state from October 26 until October 29. Players can sign up on the official website to register for a chance to participate in the four-day session.

According to creative director Khang Le, the development team at Adhesive Games had learned a great deal from feedback during the game's alpha phase. Meteor Entertainment CEO Mark Long added that the daily player count has been scaled up, and that server ping numbers have been improved.

Hawken is a free-to-play, first-person multiplayer-focused shooter, where players control a mech to defeat other mech pilots in regular deathmatch, team deathmatch, or a territory-capturing variant called missile silos mode. For more information, check out GameSpot's recent coverage.

This game is great. I played it at PAX and loved it.

If this is more stumbling bumbling immobile robotic brawling with a few innocuous sparks and metal spit wads passed for ordnance and fire power, I'll just save my interest for a worthy mech game.

Don't you guys break a confidentiality agreement or something?

Can anyone tell me if this is worth giving a try? or is it just another shooter, but with machines instead of people?

Dang. Between this and Mech Warrior Online, it looks like mech combat games might (hell of a lot of emphasis on might, there) be coming back.

Looks pretty good, aren't too many mech games these days, sadly. Wish we could get a Chromehounds 2.

@JimmeyBurrows One, it's free.... So what harm is it to try it.  You don't like it, you don't lose anything.  Two, yes it's worth a try... It is a shooter, but it's more like mechwarrior than your standard FPS.

@JimmeyBurrows Yes, it is worth giving a try already just for the fact that it's going to be free to play, you don't have to pay anything to play it. The gameplay is really awesome. Though the game looks and kind of plays fast even though you're inside a mech, it still feels like a mech, the control is a bit sluggish despite the fact that you can use boost, and the sluggish control gives it that mech feeling but not being too slow, and the cockpit around the edges feels a bit stuffy, like really watching from a mech. If you get into the beta, give it a try and when it's set to launch in december, definitely give it a try. But yeah, it's also basically another shooter with machines, but those little control tweaks and some mech customization give it some personality to stand out. It's still F2P so I don't think anyone should except anything grand or ground breaking

@SouL-Tak3R Yeah I only played it for a couple of hours before I got completely bored of it.  Haven't touched it for over a week (or two? I can't remember when I got in.)  With all the love this is getting, I might give it another go to see if my opinion has changed any.

MWO has definitely seen more of my time.

@Sgthombre There's also Armored Core V which already came out, though it seems average at best, and also *groans* Steel Battalion Heavy Armor which is just, nicely put, garpage. Let's hope MWO and Hawken turn todays mech game reputation around
