Has Activision cancelled The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for Xbox One? [UPDATE]

Australian retailer said to be cancelling Xbox One preorders for the new Spider-Man game, and Activision UK says release is indefinitely delayed.

UPDATE: April, 17 | 10:30AM PST

It looks like this isn't set in stone yet, and Activision is working to rectify the situation for Xbox One owners. An Activision representative passed along the following quotes regarding this story:

“We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game on Xbox One. Currently, the game will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and the PC on April 29, 2014 as previously announced.”

The original story appears below.

Upcoming movie tie-in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might not see the light of day on Xbox One.

“We want to inform you that we are revising our release plans for [Amazing Spider-Man 2] on Xbox One,” Activision said to UK trade site MCV.

“When and whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One is TBD.”

The absence of the title on Xbox One was first spotted by GamersHonestTruth, which began investigating after hearing that EB Games in Australia was cancelling Xbox One preorders for the title.

NeoGAF users then noticed that Activision had removed all references to the game on its official site.

Activision is yet to detail the situation, with the game still presumably coming to its other announced platforms--3DS, Wii U, PC, PS4, PS3, and 360.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still due to reach stores, at least for some consoles, on April 29.

Xbox one is a complete failure, it's sad how whenever a new game comes out there's always some issue pertaining to the Xbox one. Playstation is running away with first place in the console wars, and that's the truth

Sounds like the bureaucratic forces are at play with this. Scheduled to release on all systems and a week or so before launch it's suddenly not going to be released on one...

Some quotes from Activision:

---"When and whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One is TBD," the spokesperson said.

However, speaking with Eurogamer, Activision said that the Xbox One port was still being worked on, but failed to give a reason for the delay or a likely release window.

“We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release ASM2 video game on Xbox One," the spokesperson said.---

Keep in mind gamers that the only thing officially cancelled has been the pre-orders. It seems more likely to be a delay in X1 development for the game for whatever reason!

Seems ironic not all the articles I have read have mentioned that a SONY produced film will not release on there main competitors system. Selfish business but smart

Curious. It's cross-gen so it's odd not to have it on Xb1. It's also on WiiU, so I can't think why it wouldn't be on the One.

Still nothing on why the XB1 version is delayed or cancelled? I don't remember the last time this was done so close to a games launch with absolutely no reason given. The fact that it's still on schedule to release on the 360 makes it all the more confounding.

BladeTrinity114

Why the hell are they keeping the reason under wraps? I've read about 5 articles now and not one of them states WHY it is being delayed. I'm sorry, but if it can run on a Wii U, it can run on an Xbox One.

If Activision is clever then they should just announce right away that they are not releasing the game on Xbox one. Then, Microsoft will automatically run behind them and do whatever it takes to make the game release on X1. It would save lot of leg work for Activision. Afterall, MS don't want to be left behind in the console competition.

I can't wait to play this in 1080P on my Wii-U. I hope they do fix the problem. Maybe they could port the 3DS version over to XBox One.

Logic question for all Sony fan boys.

If this game is not coming out for X1 due to graphics why is it coming out for the 360/WII U and not on the PC.

The PC has superior graphics to the PS4 and a larger customer base.  And since 1080P defines gaming now why not just throw away your outdated PS4 and get a PC?

Congradualations gamespot.

Yet another console war bait article.

Such unambitious game of an unambitious but greedy publisher isn't big loss, nor ammo for console war flak. Don't worry.

"We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game on Xbox One"

maybe MS want's them to do something to the XB1 version they don't want to do like exclusive content or Kinect functions?

because it sounds like the reason is to do with MS so it has to be XB1 specific or the 360 version would have been cancelled too

spiderman games are all garbage anyways (maybe except the first one developed by neversoft) they suffer from the sonic cycle (google it).

1. get hopeful about the game from previews and vertical slices

2. game comes out

3. game is terrible

4. repeat

What's the big deal with this game getting delayed, games get delayed all the time. Look at Lego The Hobbit for the Wii U got delayed until April 22, while all other versions got released on time.

Who cares. Movie tie in's suck anyway. Just my opinion.

This will be the best movie tie in game of 2014 at least thats forsure. Maybe even best spiderman game if what i hear about the web swinging is true.

@spenceteeth  I'd agree if it weren't for the fact that it's releasing on every other system including the Xbox 360. I don't believe it's a strategy Sony would employ to somehow restrict game sales on the X1 but not any other system. It makes no sense since the game isn't being developed or produced by Sony. It's more likely an issue - technical, financial or otherwise - between Activision and Microsoft and possibly a specific X1 problem. Who knows, I just hope it eventually comes out for X1 so those gamers can enjoy it too.

nikon133
nikon133

@TroyTrojanGamer probably questionable decision on developers' (or publishers') behalf - projection of how many copies each platform can move. These movie tie-ins usually don't have lasting appeal (nor quality) so its all about blitz-krieg tactics.

Of course it also might be something Sony "helped" with - after all, Sony Studios hold rights for Spiderman movies - but I doubt, since game is coming out on X360. Otherwise, it would be same story as with Titanfall, only opposite - no Microsoft platforms at all.

Not really related, but since you mentioned - high end gaming PCs have more power than PS4, but average gaming PC... not necessarily.

I don't know who said that 1080p defines gaming now - I'm still playing and enjoying games on PS3. That being said, I have 3 games on PS4 and they are all 1080p and look as good as anything comparable on PC.

Killzone: Shadowfall is one of the best looking FPS games at the moment, period.

AC: Black Flag is close if not the same as high-end PC.

Second Son, best looking open world game so far. Unless I missed something better looking on PC..?

I think PS4 has proven to be capable of delivering good 1080p visuals. And this early in console's life. It will only get better as developers re-train themself from exotic last-gen architecture to new mainstream architecture, and quality of development tools improve. I think XBO will, more often than not, be able to squeeze 1080p out of games once platform matures... it will just leave developers less margin to push further with extra bells and whistles.

@TroyTrojanGamer It depends how powerful each particular PC is as to whether it is more or less powerful than a PS4.  Your larger customer base mostly has PCs running Windows XP on integrated graphics.  I have a gaming PC, just saying most PCs can't run games.

1234ritchie
1234ritchie

@TroyTrojanGamer I thought they were just making people aware that it wasn't coming to the Xbone? No slandering in the article at all in fact.

@TroyTrojanGamer  it's only that if you even believe in such a stupid thing, the fact that you even entertain such a notion says a lot more about you than about gamespot.

RevLux
RevLux

@MajinSquall That sounds as reasonable an explanation as any I've yet heard. If it does end up being something like this then there is some hope that it will release on the XB1 eventually. Possibly with extra features. Although it may depend on how well the game sells on the other platforms.

1234ritchie
1234ritchie

@MajinSquall I think this too. The mandatory Kinect is going to put off a lot of third party publishers and developers. At least with the PS4 some games do not even acknowledge the touch pad, speaker or light. Better that way!

MajinSquall
MajinSquall

@tourgen I don't think anyone cares about what the game is just the fact it's only XB1 and we don't know why

beanie_wallop
beanie_wallop

@ritsukoblue @beanie_wallop  Why can't you just choose the better console??????, stop with this bullshit. Just choose the PS4, it's better, there's absolutely no reason to buy the Xbox one right now. And i'm not a "Sony fanboy", just a fan of THE BETTER console. It's simple really

gamespotpanayis
gamespotpanayis

@nikon133 @TroyTrojanGamer  I disagree about the Sony comment.. it would make perfect sense for them not to release on XB1, but to release on the 360.  The old gen hardware is done and dusted.. not seen as any sort of competition.  The new gen is where the competition is at it's most public.. so a high profile (movie-tie-in) game, not coming to XB1 would not lose too many sales, but is a good publicity coup for Sony, but releasing on the 360 means that a much bigger install base still gets to buy the game and helps keep the venture profitable.

Having said that I don't think Activision would stand for such interference.  I think they are either not meeting the Xbox quality standards for non-indie games, or wish Microsoft to help financially to pay for any extra work porting the title across.

1234ritchie
1234ritchie

@roganth You got it in one, I have a gaming PC but not a single one of my friends has. They do have a computer more modern and more powerful than what you described, but still not good enough to play anything above low if it came out in the last decade.

MajinSquall
MajinSquall

@yoda101280 @TroyTrojanGamer true there is no such thing as the "console war" it's just something fanboys use to justify what they are saying

if you was going to call it anything it would be a race to see who gets there first but once it's over there are no hard feelings

beanie_wallop
beanie_wallop

@iamnavarres @beanie_wallop @ritsukoblue  I said "the better console". Answer me this: why isn't Microsoft telling people how many consoles have been sold???, there are no official numbers. Sony on the other hand has been showcasing their numbers and getting benefits and endorsements from every direction. If Xbox one was the better console, wouldn't Microsoft be grandstanding and saying that they're leaps and bounds ahead of the competition??, Answer: yes. But they're not doing that........and that tells me that they're doing terrible in sales, which means that nobody's buying their console, which in turn means that it's a shitty fucking console. and that's the whole story, plain and simple

iamnavarres
iamnavarres

@beanie_wallop@iamnavarres@ritsukoblue More games! I will take quality over quantity. As for buying the better console. I did the XBOX ONE. Why? I prefer the games Forza 5, Halo, GOW Titanfall  Dead Rising etc. I also prefer the controller and live. I could care less if Sony is more powerful. The only argument Sony has to date.

The XBOX ONE offers more than the PS4 whether you or I like it or use it. That is a fact. There is nothing the PS4 can do that I cant do on the Xbox One and that is something you can't say about the PS4.

The Xbox One has also sold millions of systems so how does that prelude to a forgotten console? One may have sold more today or have more games but a year or 2 from now nobody knows and sorry if I don't believe in your psychic abilities.

beanie_wallop
beanie_wallop

@iamnavarres @beanie_wallop @ritsukoblue  Isn't it obvious??? One simple reason, it has more games, it's gonna be the go-to console for EVERYTHING that has to do with video games in the future. Just face it, the xbox one is quickly becoming the forgotten console that nobody is going to buy in 2-3 years. JUST BUY THE BETTER CONSOLE!, this "xbox/ps4 fanboy" shit is dumb as fuck, if the xbox one was better, i'd buy it. but it's not, there's no reason AT ALL to buy it, as of right now. or anytime in the foreseeable future

nikon133
nikon133

@gamespotpanayis @nikon133@TroyTrojanGamer What you say makes sense, but logic does not always apply up there. If it does, Titanfall would have been released on PS3. Boost game sales, but don't boost specific new-gen console... but it didn't happen.
