Harvest Moon 3DS-bound

Natsume bringing family-friendly farming sim series to Nintendo's three-dimensional handheld, DS simultaneously.

This week, Natsume announced that its venerable farming role-playing-game hybrid franchise Harvest Moon will be putting down stakes on the 3DS and DS simultaneously. No date was given for the North American release of the game, subtitled The Tale of Two Towns, but the series' family-friendly nature all but guarantees an E-for-Everyone rating.

Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns will be told on the 3DS and DS.

As the name suggests, Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns will portray a pair of villages, the Asian-style Konohana and Europe-like Bluebell. Once harmonious neighbors, the two hamlets have had a falling out over which has the superior cuisine. To determine the outcome, players must choose a side, build a farm, grow crops, and compete in a variety of festivals.

GameSpot will have more details on Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns as they become available. Natsume promised further information on the game will be revealed during the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.

@megasmurf Actually it's not like that in the very least. Have you ever tried playing a PC game in 3D? I'd say a good 97% of games that can be run in 3D on the PC only do so though simple hacks. The others were merely tweaked by the devs to assign a proper point of convergence and make sure things like HUD elements are at the proper depth. Games don't need "native" support to work in 3D. Before you start acting like the other person doesn't know what he's talking about, you might want to make sure you do first. If you have an Nvidia card on your PC, you can see this for yourself. edit: Also you act like the Gamecube had a full sized DVD drive or that the resolution of the discs could have held both versions of the game.

@mrklorox just so you know i do have a 3ds,and do you realize how much more work it would take to make those games play 3d AND have them playable on the original ds? its like trying to make a gamecube game have motion control, they couldn't do that, remember how they made a twilight princess for the wii AND gamecube? and its not like the gamecube version could use the wii remote could it?

@megasmurf Unlike you, I do indeed own one. What part of "regular DS games should have 3D functionality on the 3DS" do you not understand?

MeGaSmUrF

@mrklorox just wondering but have you even seen any 3ds gameplay? honestly i'd like to see the original ds play SSFIV,and have you seen any screens/videos for the resident evil games? there's no way a ds could take that. argue if you will but it's pointless

@dalscowboy22 talk about ignorance. You're the geniuses who somehow think I believe the DS is a better system than the 3DS. Again, I'm advocating forward compatibility. Not dropping 3DS production. Reading is fundamental.

@mrklorox @MeGaSmUrF the point of the message will be you will never see "DS games with 3DS functionality." you also did not understand my comment and made it into something it is not, i did not talk about the development of the PS3 (which has been a real system since its release date). it was simply to show you with the install base of the PS2 sony still released the PS3, this is to show you that the install base of the DS will not (and obviously did not) stop Nintendo from releasing the 3DS. And in agreement with MeGa, absolutley the 3DS is a much better piece of hardware than the DS, if mrklorox does not understand this it is simply ignorance.

@dalscowboys22 @MeGaSmUrF @negative commenters Did you even read what I wrote? Do you even own a 3DS? Dals: The PS3 has just in the past couple years become a real platform compared to the PS2. Devs didn't do this on PS3 partly because it's not in the system's capabilities in the first place, and primarily because the only non-Sony PS3 games coming out were 360 ports. mega: The gap between DS and 3DS in terms of hardware power is less than that between the Gamecube and Wii. You should reevaluate your assumption that the 3DS is capable of much better graphics. Aside from screen resolution and 3D support, they're basically identical. Even if character models COULD be higher poly on the 3DS, the data for such a model is so minuscule, it wouldn't impact the cart space. You don't know how 3D models work, do you? Only on places such as Gamespot would you find people who are against forward compatibility. I'm sure you people talked nothing but mess on the concept of stereoscopy for gaming before the 3DS came out and somehow thing Kinect is trying to take away your controllers.

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town will always be the best for me. :-)

Sweet. Lol just started playing a new file on the snes version today, then I saw this and was like "Ha! I have senses XD!" I hope it comes out good.friends of mineral town and the gcn were the last I liked, however the gcn one(a wonderful life) was too small. Maybe something like that but bigger would be awesome.

Sounds great but knowing Natsume I'm guessing that they will create a game for the DS and then port it over to the 3DS if its gonna be two games. Which means not fully utilising the graphics prowess of the 3DS. Just like them using virtually the same graphics from the GBA for the Harvest Moon DS game. How depressing.

so, there will be romance ala romeo and juliet in this game ...

@mrklorox did you say the same thing when the ps3 came out and the ps2 install base was to much? the ds has been out a long time and the 3ds is a significant upgrade with b/c and there is nothing wrong with what they are doing...

3ds is starting to have good launch titles but it seems not enough to make me purchase one...at least untile megaman legends 3 do come out or contra or even castlevania for it..

Glad to see this game for the 3DS. Nintendo needs to poor it one. I was a Mario Golf on the 3DS so badly since we didn't get one for the Wii. The launch titles were ok, but there seemed to be more average and poor games then real gems. Besides SSF IV and maybe Ridge Racer 3D, there was no big HIT for the handheld. At least not yet. I'm hoping Nintendo gives us some big announcements at the E3. Last year they did a fabulous job with all the exclusives. We need the same thing this year, but with even more games since we have new hardware.

MeGaSmUrF
MeGaSmUrF

mrklorox,i hope you're joking.... 3ds has much better graphics than the original ds,so even if nintendo were to make the same games on both than what would be the point of even using the old ones even if they had 3d capabilities? you'd need a 3ds to play it anyways

Bazaar system in last harvest moon is very refreshing. I hope this new harvest moon gonna bring new gameplay feature like the last one.

Some of the newer Harvest Moons just don't give you enough time to get anything done in a day. My fav was the SNES version.

I hope this is as good as the one I played on the good ol' PS1.

Will it be one cart? If not, when will we start seeing DS games with 3DS functionality? We all know the DS install base is too large for Big N to jump ship and develop exclusively for the new platform. And third parties must be noticing this too. Yes, I realize 3DS games have a plastic tab to keep them out of the DS. But do you really think Nintendo would have the cart form factor so similar to regular DS games if they didn't intend on allowing cross-generational carts into the market?

Great. I was just thinking a few weeks ago how I somewhat regretted never getting into Harvest Moon back in the day. (A thought brought on by a conversation with my brother.) This could potentially be a good oportunity to give the series a try.

@Setsuka13 You got the same Harvest Moon tastes as me. Rune Factory: Frontier is actually pretty good though, but its only half Harvest Moon so that doesn't count. And I can't believe I dished $50 for Animal Parade. Piece of sh**!

@josephreynii Up until Friends of Mineral Town on the GBA and A Wonderful Life on the GCN, every Harvest Moon game after that as been crap.

Ok....can someone please explain to me how the old ones were great but the new ones were terrible? I bought them all and they seemed like the same game to me....the exact same game....exact...same...game... Dunno. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm really not knocking the franchise. My wife is going to make me buy it (if only for the stuffed animal give away) but seriously...exact same game over and over again.

I loved the SNES version (DL's it on the Wii) and the N64 version. When this series went sour i got in to Rune Factory a little. If this was kinda back to basics I would be picking it up day1. Don't let the cows and chickens fool you, this isn't a dumb as an idea as it sounds. I wonder if they will capitalize off the "Farmville" crazy (of which i took no part in )

Harvest Moon... Not a bad game, actually :) I prefer the older versions of the series. Hope this'll be a good one!

Actually, this is Harvest Moon twin village that was released in japan on DS on July 8 2010. It's not a new game.

As long as it is like the older games in the series, I'm okay with it. Back To Nature, 64, Friends of Mineral Town, and even A Wonderful Life was great.

Back to Nature was the last decent HM game.... every one since then has sucked really bad. They need to take the series back to its roots.

With the popularity of FarmVille, I am surprised this game is not popular
