Harmonix has "grand plans" to revive Rock Band potentially for Xbox One, PS4

CEO Alex Rigopulos says both Rock Band and Dance Central are "near and dear" to the studio and both will come back "at some point" in the "coming console cycle" with "guns blazing."

In the interest of clarity, here is the full quote from Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos today.

"[The Rock Band and Dance Central franchises] are near and dear to our hearts and our minds. And we have grand plans to bring back both of them with guns blazing at some point in the coming console cycle."

The original story is below.

Today during a PAX East keynote address, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos teased that the Boston area studio has "grand plans" to bring the Rock Band and Dance Central franchises to the new generation of consoles, presumably the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and potentially Wii U.

He prefaced his talk this morning by saying he would not announce a Rock Band 4 or Dance Central 4 and he did not say if these games were in fact in development in any way. However, he stressed that both franchises are "near and dear" to Harmonix. He went on to say that the studio plans to bring these franchises to the "coming console cycle" "at some point" and with "guns blazing."

The comments today from Rigopulos are not terribly surprising. Last summer, he said that the Rock Band franchise will return "at the right point in time."

The most recent entry in the core Rock Band series was 2010's Rock Band 3, though the studio would ship a downloadable game, Rock Band Blitz, in 2012. Meanwhile, the last Dance Central game was 2012's Kinect-enabled Dance Central 3 for Xbox 360.

Harmonix is currently working on music game Fantasia: Music Evolved for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as a free-to-play FPS called Chroma.

For its part, Activision has also suggested that the Guitar Hero series, put on hiatus in 2011, could come back some day.

Also during the keynote today, Rigopulos announced a new mobile game from Harmonix called Record Run. It's a music-inspired endless runner, but that's all we know about it right now.

Oh yes!  1,000 times yes!  I want to see this happen and soon.  I love jamming to tunes and pretending like I'm making it happen!  Love it!

Ill be happy to buy it provided they keep Pro Guitar support in. Obviously with this, full pro instrument support. Rock Band for me is no longer a game for 5 colour buttons, unless your entry-level.

I'll be much happier if dance central 4 is release this year TT u TT

I still like the idea of the game. I just don't play them anymore.

If I had more spare time, I'd bust out RB3, as I bought the real guitar that worked with it.

Honestly I think Rocksmith had the right idea. i think plastic instruments are done with.

I think the last Guitar Hero game was awful. I don't need gimmicks. Just focus on the purity of the experience.

I'm not ready for the Rock Band and Guitar Hero to come back. The reality is licensing all the songs you want to play could cost you a lot and I think that is what brings these games down. If you could play any song you wanted or they had some novel new gameplay to make it more fun, then I could see a comeback. People could get 4 smartphones together and make a rock band now..

Sort of unrelated, but I'd like to see Dance Dance Revolution make a comeback.  Rock Band/Guitar Hero definitely topped off some great nights with friends, but there's just something so nostalgic about DDR that really makes me want to see it flourish again.

If you don't like the series, then that's fine, it's your opinion, but you don't have to be an asshole about it. There is still a large following of people who still play Rock Band online and I never have any trouble finding others to play with. The game is the kind that you can continue to play years from its release and still have fun doing so. Music keeps coming and will never die, so there's no reason for the music game genre to completely die forever either. Harmonix is a great developer that is very passionate about music. The last game they released allowed you to play with a real guitar, bass, and/or keyboard. No, these options did not replicate actually playing a real instrument as much as the games that have been later released (Rocksmith 1 & 2014), but I have no doubts that the next Rock Band will allow you to do so, and then some.

They are sadly mistaking if they think the "plastic guitar" fad is gonna make a comeback, that BS already ran its course.

I would love to see a new Rock Band. I put so much time into RB2 with friends. Awesome fun times.

Too late Harmonix - I got Rocksmith, actually started playing guitar properly, and now playing in a band.

I loved Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on my 360. Great games to play with a group of friends.

Please don't, I'd rather not see the next-gen DLC stores flooded with hundreds of single song DLCs which is exacerbated by the fact they're accompanied by trial versions. At the very least get Sony and Microsoft to set aside a separate section of their stores for all the music game DLC.

Am I the only one that would kill for a Amplitude or Frequency spin off or straight up sequel? Sony and Harmonix get to it!!!! we are now ready!

Never got into Rock Band... I was more of a Guitar Hero player... But I'd like to see this genre return.. Maybe they can actually utilise the Kinect on the Xbox too? (Air-Guitar rather than plastic ones? Control your performer?) Anyway.. As much as I'd like it to return I think Guitar Hero left too much saturation in the air for people to simply welcome the genre back... Think it needs way more time

If it's Rock Band I'm in,as I still play RB3 (with 1 & 2 imported/DLC) quite regularly. Just don't integrate some pointless Kinect feature where you have to jump about to show off your "stage presence" and I'll be happy!

I just want the same game just with different songs. Don't need anything new or refreshing. The gameplay is just fine as it is, just more songs. As I don't purchase DLC period all those DLC songs for the previous games might as well not even exist. Just give me good old rock band style gameplay with a hundred plus songs and I'm good to go. Then go straight to working on a sequel with a hundred plus songs. I will not purchase miniature DLC song packs. In fact unless a DLC includes at least 50 songs with a variety of music genres I would not purchase DLC. for a game like this. For me DLC killed these games not the games themselves.

I already dropped a huge amount on drums.  Bought the ION set, then customized the heck out of it. I should have just bought a Yamaha Drum set, but hey I am happy with what I have,  As long as I get the option to just buy the interface module (midi adapter) like they did with the XBOX360 and PS3 for drummers and keyboard players - I am down.  Make me buy a whole new property peripheral again and I am not going to return.  Also would be nice to somehow move or be able to use or even verify all the DLC songs I bought (about $500 bux worth of DLC) and import it over to XB1.

Naylord

As long as I can use my old instruments I'd be in. No way I'll ever pay for a whole new set though.

I´d love to see some rock band action on my xbox one.

Maybe Ion will release a xbox one module so that I can use my drum rocker...

That would be cool

I'd be good to go for it. Harmonix 'the original heads behind Guitar Hero' did the genre right.  Just as long as you don't need to do challenges to unlock clothes. Just bring back the money aspect, and play up being a band and earning money.

Rockband 4, a huge library of songs, and the option to use real AND plastic guitars, drums, mic (cause we spent alot on them!) Im not sure how this would work or if it is even possible but find a way for users to be able to import their own mp3s into the game, (some kind of conversion program that creates the note highway perhaps?) Any of that and youve got a deal!

I'm sure Rock Band 4 will feature real instruments.  I'm in!

Blame Konami - they killed their own franchise with 'Dance Dance Revolution: Super Ultra MegaMix - Hyper Edition 7'.

Or was it 6 that did it in?

@Codesterz You honestly think they can release 50 songs a week on a regular basis? So you don't mind paying $100 every week on DLC? Okay then..

Badmutha

@componedemon I swear I'm closer to $1000 on the DLC tracks, not spending it all over again. Need some kind of verification definitely!
Don't mind spending money on DLC but I want it to be songs I haven't bought already.

I have so many addons and extras for my drums set it is redonkulas... (yes I spelled it that way on purpose)

I built custom interface kits. MIDI adapters. Double bass pedal that cost as much as the ion. Pintech cymbals. Roland Snare. I don;t know where to stop.  I would love to get back into it again.  Please make GH and RB happen on XB1.

@stu_gamer "Im not sure how this would work or if it is even possible but find a way for users to be able to import their own mp3s into the game, (some kind of conversion program that creates the note highway perhaps?) "

This is impossible, and as a former Rock Band Network author that is NOT how the songs are made. This feature will never happen, ever
