Free-to-play Xbox Live game Happy Wars has hit six million players, Xbox announced today.

Posting on Xbox Wire, PlayXBLA community coordinator Ashton Williams revealed new content for Happy Wars to celebrate the six million player milestone.

The update includes a Happy Wartober event which features special sale offers, exclusive items, and a new character class. According to the post, the special offers will be changed every day during October.

In addition to the announcement of new content, a Happy Wars: Season 2 was confirmed for the upcoming new year. No additional information was provided on what changes Happy Wars: Season 2 will bring.

Happy Wars is a free-to-play game which supports simultaneous play for up to 30 players (15 vs. 15), who must attack their opponents' castle while simultaneously defending their own. The game launched on Xbox Live as Microsoft's first free-to-play title.

Maybe it's improved since then, but when I played it the winning strategy basically boiled down to getting a bunch of mages together and tornado-spamming over and over again.

Not too bad for a pay-to-win. I remember playing it when it first came out, then coming back to it months later. It's really improved the servers and all the events they have make the game feel inviting. While it is pay-to-win, it's not hard to be good at the game with regular items. I've never spent a dime on the game and I can be MVP pretty often. That said though, it still is a pay-to-win. I think the game is enjoyable in the right mood, and with friends.

5.9 million of which tried it for 10 minutes and quit.

Oh, wow. Maybe I'll jump back in. When I first started playing, the game took forever to initialize. Damn near unplayable... but simple wacky fun. I love games like this. Reminds me of "Whacked", which was unfortunately an XBL Beta Test exclusive, for whatever reason.

while the other consoles pump out exclusives after exclusives, 360s got nothing. Obviously people will dl the only game to play

Happy Wars? I guess it's a good change from all the hyper realistic macho men war games out there, a bit like playing war with plastic soldiers as a kid. As far as Wartober and names derived from October, I think I prefer Rocktober or the Simpson's episode with a Scotchtoberfest.

Impressive! Just proves that F2P actually works if it is done right!

Amazing how MOBA's just dominate over MMOs these days.

6 million people need something better to do i think

Why does Gamespot like to post arbitrary numbers as news. It's free to play so the user count means nothing really. I would like to know out of those 6 million users how many are actually paying money? You know...numbers that mean something.

I'm still playing it. Been playing for almost 2 months now. Pretty good game. Lots of items to acquire. You really don't have to spend any real money on it unless you want to get some of the uber gear quickly. Most of the gear can be leveled and buff with special abilities, which is cool. There are different tiers of players you can match up with. It actually does take some skill to fight and stay alive. I wonder whaat Season 2 will bring.

I played this game like my hair was on fire for the first 2 months. Then after I got the gear I wanted I haven't played it since.

@sladakrobot Me either. Though I did try Ascend... and I'm glad I never spent a dime on it. Free-to-Play, Pay-to-Win. No thanks.

@malokeviHuh?  Whacked was a commercial product.  It was released alongside XBLs initial releases.

@eternaldragoonx And we love you!

@jophy Um, Halo says hello - and so does Gears of War, not to mention Forza.  I know it`s trendy to bash MS - but they do have a lot of exclusives.

@thomasn7 Um, World of Warcraft still dominates their nearest competitor, ten fold.

@vduong942 Not really, its just a MOBA, and MOBA's existed before fat princess

Wow, you aren't kidding. Its basically Fat Princess minus the princess with a very slightly different art style and a more cluttered HUD

Pretty sad.

@bunchanumbersLol, your user name is so similar to WingChopMasta's comment, saying that a F2P having 6 million players is just like reporting bunchanumbers that have no meaning, it's the amount that pays that matters.

I admit,i played Spartacus and i found it not bad...before the update lol
The update locked all my new gladiators(everytime i chose them, the game froze the console) so it became unplayable.
It was fun and with 11 of 12 achievements i am happy i played a game with no money spending on anything :)

@HowlPendragon Actually gameplay-wise I found it to be much better than Fat Princess, with all the abilities and leveling etc. But the fact that this game is 100% pay-to-win makes it much worse than Fat Princess. It's a shame, it could have been a really great game.

I think Ascend is great, and personally I am not really sure that "Pay-To-Win" really applies to that game. Yes, you can buy soul packs to boost your character, but not in any ways that you could not do on your own through good old fashioned grinding. Besides, you do not really have to fight anyone that is human (barring your avatar do it for you when you ascend), so who are you paying to win against? The CPU? I haven't paid a dime, and I was able to beat the entire game.

@sladakrobot That's the way go my friend! I always play for free and avoid pay walls. I will have to check Spartacus out.
