Halo: Spartan Assault expansion arriving August 29

Operation Hydra coming to Windows 8 game this week; adds five new missions and achievements; Xbox 360 controller support will also be added.

Microsoft today announced Operation Hydra, the first expansion for $7 Windows 8 and Windows 8 Phone game Halo: Spartan Assault. The content will be released on August 29 for free.

The Operation Hydra expansion adds five new missions to Halo: Spartan Assault, as well as new achievements. Players will rejoin Spartan Sarah Palmer in the content, as they embark on a mission to the core of planet Draetheus V's moon to discover the source of an alien signal.

The expansion also adds support for wired Xbox 360 controllers, allowing players to control the Spartan-IV soldiers through the familiar input on Windows 8 PCs and tablets. On top of this, power weapons previously only available through in-app purchase can now be acquired through using XP.

In addition, Microsoft has released 512MB version of Halo: Spartan Assault in the Windows 8 Phone Store for all carriers. A free demo of the game will be available on August 30 featuring one mission and a gameplay tutorial.

Halo: Spartan Assault launched in July and is the fastest grossing Xbox Live title in the Windows Phone Store based on revenue for the first 30 days of availability, according to Microsoft. It was developed by Vanguard Games (Gatling Gears, Greed Corp) in association with 343 Industries.

The twin-stick-controlled top-down shooter takes place between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4. The game contains 25 missions, integration with and Halo 4 that includes additional experience points and unlockable Spartan emblems, and in-app purchases. Whoo!!! I have a crap ton of XP sitting around, so I'm glad I'll be glad when I can spend them on some useful gear finally.

Only complaint I have with Spartan Assault is the limited weapon variety. While I wasn't particularly fond of the concept in the main games, I think there should be a few different weapon loadouts to start with. For the cost of XP players can spawn with Rockets, Spartan Laser, or Sniper Rifle, but I would like a few default weapons. Assault Rifle, Spiker, Plasma RIfle, etc.. instead of the game pre-selecting one each mission.

To be honest, I never even heard of this game until I saw this article.

All of you people bitching about Windows 8 just sound like a bunch of followers. Windows 8 is a more streamlined experience, operates much faster, and has a much easier, better way of doing things. Did you people want Windows to look the same forever without innovating at all? Take the frigin hour to learn it and get with the program.

You guys sound like whiny babies that got their pacifier taken away.

Very good news about the controller support. I bought this game the day it launched on my Windows 8 laptop and haven't been able to play it yet because of no controller support.

Will it also offer controller support for the Windows phone?  When I read the headline I pictured someone playing a phone game with a controller. (I know that isn't the case)

I'm still waiting for Halo 3 for PC before even considering buying this game.

blah. I still need to finish the last chapter of the main game and get gold star on a few more of the missions for my last couple ahcievements, but I enjoyed the game well enough, so looking forward to more content. Still wish this would get an XBLA release. Don't understand why it won't given the ease of playing Twin-Stick shooters on a controller.

@Grimkillah I'd love to see Halo Wars 2, but with Ensemble gone whose going to make it? I don't think it's happening.

@flamingpancake @Grimkillah A bunch of the Ensemble guys formed Robot Entertainment and has already done some work with MS (AOE Online).  That being said, I also doubt we'll ever see a Halo Wars 2.
