Halo 4 world championship gets $500,000 prize pot

343 Industries announces the Halo 4 Global Championship, a free-for-all tournament with a $200,000 prize for the winning player.

by

343 Industries has announced a $500,000 competition for Halo 4, with a $200,000 grand prize going to the winner of the free-for-all tournament.

The five-week online tournament kicks off on July 15, with registered players earning points through Halo 4's new Global Championship playlist. Players who finish in the top four each week will qualify for the final stage of the competition.

Attendees of the Rooster Teeth Expo in Austin, Texas, this weekend can also take part in a local Wild Card tournament to qualify for the final.

The Halo 4 Global Championship final takes place in Seattle and runs from August 31 to September 1, with 343 Industries paying the travel bill for all qualifying finalists.

The tournament is being run by Halo developer 343 Industries and Virgin Gaming.

More information about the tournament can be found on Halo Waypoint.

I guess this is a good way of attracting gamers to Halo 4's multiplayer. I haven't played the online portion of 4 in a couple of months.

No way this can be competitive as in tournament standard. This game is just for fun. Even Smash bros is a lot more tourney base competitive than this one.

Play Team Throwdown, all the settings were configured by the competitive Halo community & is the equivalent of the old MLG playlist

This game is so non-competitive it's a joke. Throwing money at it doesn't change that, 343. Fix your shit with Halo 5.

I wish I was 17 and grew up playing this so then I'd have a shot at the title...

It's funny when they call it "global" as in throughout the entire globe of the planet. But the tournaments are only taking place within the US? 'National' would have been a more appropriate term.

hmm i wonder if a payign a pro to teach me to play would be worth it hmmm any, place where i can do that?

Isn't 200k a bit too much for a free-for-all competition?

This is perfect for the kids, but for people like me who have jobs good luck not playing for 8 hours everyday will screw your rank up no matter how good you play.

i always though a game should remain a game and i never believed in "professional leagues", therefore this initiative sounds ridiculous to me. I know the world and life its unfair so many times in so many ways, but i cant think in any way how such initiative could be anything but some stupid sellbooster. Its unfair that half a million goes to someone that became a zombie playing Halo. hope my opinion doesnt hurt any hardcore halo player ^^'

I don't like the sound of the tournament structure. Sounds like I'd have to give up sunlight just to have any chance of winning, plus it sounds like the gamelist will be plagued with cheaters. Sure, the cheaters will get caught and it's unlikely they'll advance, but in the meantime, they're ruining your score and forcing you to quit games.

@Gankstar_VX84 Play Team Throwdown, its the competitive playlist w/ better settings made by the Halo community.

The connection dilemma was obviously your partners own issue.

The_Beanster
The_Beanster

This game was ruined for competitive play by design choices made by the devs, not any connection or user map issues. The last competitive halo was 3

@TheEveryMan It's global b/c all the best Halo players are here.  Not gonna get too many from Africa...so it's a compeition among the best Halo players from across the globe

@Barrakas21 It's a business. They're not just giving away money. I'm willing to bet that they have something to gain by having this tournament.

Bill Gates, one of the richest and biggest nerds out there, donates hundreds of millions of dollars to charitable causes year after year - and plans to give all of his money to charitable foundations when he dies.  Maybe the world could use another rich nerd.

@Barrakas21 Who gives a shit. People will always donate to charity for world hunger problems. If 343 want to do a Esports tournament at RTX then let them.

@liotinedario in some cases i agree, in some cases i do not, simulators should be competed in for something to gain, Gran turismo and GT academy, while games like cod, halo, bf, and other arcadey games should be played purely for fun

@TrueGB I've been playing and the highest place I've gotten is 3rd place, usually averaging at 5th place. They're are way too many people better than me playing, and last time I wen't into normal FFA I got first place. I think there are way more serious people playing and also a lot of cheaters (watching my killcam and a sniper gets 3 headshots within 3 seconds, how many people are actually that good). The chance to win money makes people go insane in terms of competition, and it's driving me crazy seeing how many people are better than me when I normaly do fairly good in normal online matches.

@TrueGB

You're describing the first tournament. This tournament is different from that one. You're ranked based on average score for this tournament. The person with the highest average score in each week will move on to the finals. The only problem with this being based on averagre score is that you get a higher average score by killing or dodging a kill in a special way.The gametypes in this tournament are infinity, rumble, objective and legendary based.I never actually participated in the first tournament because I bought halo 4 in the middle of that tournament. I hated what i heard from that tournament anyway.

@SamehH99 @gamer6130 i said its perfect for kids never said they was the only ones who play halo, people who have alot of time on their hands is obviously the ones that will do well

@Bones9650 @Barrakas21 More support for the online community, hence why part of it is online. If not, it would've been strictly LAN

@ooblah @Barrakas21 Sure also dont forget the number of villages who died from pulmonary diseases, and other shit because of bill gates factories destroying the way of live of the people as long as he makes sure to donate some millions fuck it right?open your eyes and study your lesson better bill gates has done more wrongs than rights and those wrongs killed a lot.

liotinedario

@frostbite2user @liotinedario well, with the latest update GT5 or pure simulators like RF2 or AssettoCorsa, shares a lot with reality... so the skills you own in real life works in the game too... fps, or fighting game on another level, requires you to learn the rules of a world that has nothing to do with reality so it has no useful purpose at all, unless pro Halo gamers dont find attractive to play 5+ hrs a day to get better in a world with fake mechanics... nothing wrong with non-simulative genres, it's just that being good at that doesnt really mean the same as being good with a racing simulator, thats all

@Timaetaj @vatorus @TheEveryMan The only semi successful players were the BUKs.

BUK1 & BUK2. Apart from them, the rest of the players that attended MLG event couldn't place anywhere near the t32.

PrpleTrtleBuBum
PrpleTrtleBuBum

@Timaetaj @vatorus @TheEveryMan "The best players are from U.S. That's a simple fact so we don't even have to consider the other people."

Just like all the best hockey players are in NHL and the best basketball players in NBA. They're in US so they're obviously the best.

MN121MN

@gamer6130 @SamehH99 Not really. You'll be surprised that most of the best gamers around here are actually those who have worked, have built a family.
