Halo 4 bypassing beta test

343 Industries says a prerelease trial for upcoming shooter is not in the works, instead focusing on polishing and shipping Master Chief's return.

by

343 Industries is not planning to mark the 2012 return of Master Chief with a multiplayer beta, the developer confirmed in its latest Halo Bulletin.

Halo fans shouldn't expect a beta for Halo 4.

The news was first hinted at earlier this week by Halo franchise manager Frank O'Connor, who suggested the developer would instead focus on shipping and polishing the game.

343's statement today echoed that sentiment and again made clear that the developer is testing Halo 4 at a "significant scale."

"While we are testing Halo 4 code, gameplay, and systems at significant scale to get excellent data, input, and feedback, we are focused on polishing and shipping our experience for the duration of the year, and splitting resources to manage and build a beta is not on our schedule," reads the message.

Halo 4 is due out for the Xbox 360 this holiday. It is a direct sequel to 2007's Halo 3 and stars supersoldier Master Chief.

i just hope they dont stray to far away from what they did with halo 3, leave the jet packs to be picked up, same with the bubble shield and armor lock etc, and keep sprint to start off with. i dont know how i feel about the custom classes you get to create. i just feel it would be so easy to mess up and have halo 4 straying away from what made the franchise so popular

Awe man, I got rid of my Gen1 360. Looks like I'll have to go out and get another.

For a halo game like this to finally come out really gives me hope. The Anniversary edition wasn't bad but it could have been better. Reach did very well its self though it didn't stick with me for awhile. I do know that ex-bungie employees work at 343 so i do believe this game will be the best yet. But i have been proven wrong before

The beta testing is also known as the first month after it is released!! Take that, pre-orders!

@marscaleb, my bad dude, misread your post, somehow thinking you just meant the Xbox in general. I bring dishonor to my family.

What could possibly go wrong? lol

I'm kind of glad to hear this, after the way the last two Halo beta tests were used to drive sales of games that weren't worth $60.

A little disappointed to hear this. Beta programs usually help a game tremendously.

i would hope they wouldnt need to beta it. theyv been making this f**ken game for like a century now! they should be able to get it right.

@Travis888 Fortunately it was because crackdown was a ridiculous and fun game.

@Rat_King Halo 3, ODST, Reach, Anniversary, plus Halo 4 to be fifth. Sixth if you count Halo Wars. All on this one console. What am I missing?

perfectly reasonable. why bother with a basic standard of quality when your game will sell 1.4 gajillion copies just for being called "halo 4"?

@RollsRoyce of course Halo 4 will be an exclusive to xbox. but true this is about the only xbox exclusive worth a damn

I don't like there being no beta... but a demo released a bit before the launch will make me just as happy.

Hopefully it comes out for the Xbox 360 and not on the PS3, Microsoft needs exclusives this is one of them.

@SDSkarface Uh....ok, does that affect the game play? Well, when you get your copy, as I'm sure you'll be one of the first ones in line to get it, let us know how good it looks.

Halo 4 on Xbox360 anyone care to take a guess at what resolution this will be running in? because if you guessed UNDER the lowest hd standard of 720p you would be correct.

Isn't the entire point of a beta to increase your tester base, therefore garnering more input about what issues may be present. HENCE... allowing developers to polish the game more successfully? Not that I care if the game is polished, halo is overrated. Fun, but overrated.

Rat_King
Rat_King

@Marscaleb, actually it'd be the sixth including ODST, seventh including Halo Wars. But I'm ok with not talking about those anymore and just sort of letting them....fade away.

Rat_King
Rat_King

I thought the point of the beta was to release it to a few average joes to get feedback on how it runs and any noticeable bugs. I didn't realize it was an optional "nah, we'll just try and make sure it's shipped how we hope it should turn out."

Rat_King
Rat_King

Travis I could not agree more and I think the armor lock is by far the best example of this. I mean, how is it fair that someone becomes invincible, shoots off an EMP blast, and can lunge-back elbow you while doing a 180 turn...I mean really? This should've been addressed upon release, at this point they've just given up...

Travis888
Travis888

Fine with me. The Beta's were just another way for Microsoft to get money from crappier games (ODST and Crackdown). Crackdown wasn't bad, but let's face it no one would've bought that game on its own. It's not like they actually listened to the community anyways. People were begging for Armor Lock to get nerfed in the Beta among other things but they didn't listen. Like I said, it was never a way to make the game better, it was always about getting hype and money.

Bowser05

I'm not entirely sure they understand how important the beta can be for a game's final state. I mean, look at Gears. I remember quite a few problems in the beta and at launch I had nearly nothing to complain about. IT definitely helps to assess situations on a wider scale with a much higher variety of people and settings rather than controlled environments like normal testing situations. But they did mention they are doing testing on a larger scale...so maybe they have it under control. We will see I suppose.

@zpluffy they said halo reach was going to be the last halo made by bungie, not forever.

JarethRevien

Well considering most of the people in 343 are former bungee people, the game can't be that bad.

The optimist would say 343 is clearly very confident in their product, and are certain they can deliver a game at or above the high standards for action and polish that Halo fans have come to expect. The pessimist would say it's a fool's errand, and if they plan to innovate the formula without the players' approval, Gamestop should be ready to receive a mountain of trade-ins. The realist (OHGFawx, as well as many of you) says, Bungie made Halo games for ten years and you can be absolutely certain that all the lessons they learned have been thoroughly communicated to 343 like a mother explaining her child's particularities to the new nanny.

we should be greatful we're getting another Halo. I doubt Microsoft/343 will make a mess of this. And besides, 343 does have some ex-bungie staffers working on it. This will be epic.

@zpluffy They did say it would end the master chiefs story with halo 3 and they said halo reach would be their last halo game. That was all said by Bungie and they didn't lie. Bungie is not making halo 4 Microsoft has the rights to the title and handed it over to 343 studios. Bungie said they were gonna stop with halo reach and they did. its Microsoft and their money mongering ways that didn't want to let the halo cash cow die.

Sigil-otaku
Sigil-otaku

@zpluffy Nope, they never said it'd end at Halo 3 but rather master chiefs story would (although technically that is wrong as it's not ending) but did you really think it would just end? And even if they did say it and changed there mind is that such a bad thing unless you somehow had some sad addiction to the number 3 and needed to not play past that number? I agree it was a marketing ploy but no grown man needs to stand around acting bereaved that a company chose not to end a franchise. If you want to end it at 3 and your over 12 you will have the power and self determination, I hope. People need to worry less about trying to complain about the exact wording of a company and just see if they want the game or not. I doubt Uncharted will end at the third game either, neither was final fantasy ever 'final' and I'm sure other devs will choose to make spin offs or sequels they said weren't coming too (look at metal gear) but do we really need to care? Buy it if you want, don't if you don't but seriously please don't hang around complaining about whether a statement in the past has been turned in to an iron clad contract or not. We should only be doing that for crap like Big Brother when we all hope it will end but it never does and they actually put effort into expressing it was the end and failed us.

@XboxGuy1537 i was just stating facts, you where ignorant (which just for the record means the lack of knowledge) about the subject when you made your first comment, ignorance makes people look stupid (key word here is "look" meaning i never said you are in fact stupid), so it was more of an attempt to make you try to read about the things you are going to write about, rather than a personal attack which is what you do in your last response using words like "butthurt" and "pathetic". so i ask you this, who is the one making rude comments here?

I feel like not releasing a public beta test is a bad move. I mean betas give a chance for players to give feedback on what needs to fixed. What better way to please the audience than to give them what they want right?

zpluffy
zpluffy

I remember them saying Halo 3 will be the Last Halo. ODS and Halo Wars was then released. They then release Halo Reach and claiming it to be the Last Halo series. Then here comes Halo 4. It's a very nice marketing strategy you see.

XboxGuy1537
XboxGuy1537

@BasiK3108 I'm sorry, are you so butthurt that you have to make an incredibly rude comment just because I stated my opinion? Beta's are great to fix glitches, but I was just saying they have a large development team working so that means more time put into finding bugs and glitches. Thanks for the incredibly rude and pathetic comment.

Its really hard to tell weather this'll work out or not. I can see they're passionate about the game, but they are a new developer, and normally a hugely hyped game disappoints. We'll just have to wait and see.

at around :50 seconds in, when the guy stops talking about what makes Halo Halo, and making it bigger and better.. Does anyone else see a very small master chief commit suicide when it cuts to the concept art? haha. I just keep seeing this little master chief fall off.

Well, I guess when this is the fifth Halo game you've made for this one console generation you don't really need to test your assets as much. Sixth if you count Halo Wars.

I hope they surprise us by announcing a beta for Halo 4. Could still possibly happen. Bungie included Halo fans with beta testing since Halo 2 which was fun for us and saved Bungie multiplayer dev. time. Where's the love 343i? dudegamer.com

@Mkeegs79 I don't agree that it's ridiculous to have no beta. Think about it. Did the original Halo have a beta? No. And to me, at least, that was my favorite one in the series. I'm pretty sure Halo 2 didn't have a beta either. But I could be wrong there. These guys are pretty passionate about the game, and they have M$ breathing down their backs. If they put the no bloom BR back in the game. I'm good to go :)
