Halo 4 art director leaves 343 to join Oculus VR

Kenneth Scott will work on first-party content for the Oculus Rift.

by

A senior employee at Halo 4 developer 343 Industries, Kenneth Scott, has left the studio to join Oculus VR, the company behind the Oculus Rift which continues to amass talent from throughout the industry.

Scott will assume the same title--Art Director--that he carried at 343, according to a tweet sent out by Oculus (via GamesIndustry.biz). He had been with 343 since 2008, and prior to that he spent a decade as the art director for id Software.

"Welcome Kenneth Scott, Oculus Art Director, formerly of 343 and id Software," the tweet reads. "Ken is building our 1st-party content team!"

Scott is hardly the first former id Software staffer to end up with Oculus; most notably, John Carmack assumed the role of chief technology officer while still at id, where he continued to work until several months later. (The parent company of id, ZeniMax, is currently suing Oculus, which has vowed to fight back.) Soon after Carmack went to Oculus, another id staffer, former Rage creative director Matt Hooper, made the same move. Notable developers from other studios, including Valve's Atman Binstock and Michael Abrash, have also been hired by Oculus.

The company aspires to create a platform with a billion people using it--what CEO Brendan Iribe describes as "the largest MMO ever made." After its recent $2 billion acquisition by Facebook, there has been some doubt cast on whether gaming remains a key point for the company, but Iribe has stated Oculus is "very committed to gaming."

Meh. Maybe I am in the minority, but I am just not interested in VR. It's right up there with motion control in my opinion. I can't imagine a game that could be good enough for me to say "ooh, I gotta get me one of those". I wish them well, but I see nothing to be excited about.

Well, his wife left last year to join Naughty Dog and this has been in the making for like four months as he stepped down from his role 343 to relocate to Los Angeles back in January.

I'm glad they are investing in creating their own game content. We need quality VR games to help drive the adoption of VR.

From Halo to Facebook VR MMOs. I wonder what gem the industry has in store for us next? Perhaps full assimilation to the Borg race?

I'll say it again as I did on the Naughty Dog articles...

If you're successful in what you do other companies will want you, and people naturally move on.

Sure there'll be occasions where people leaving will genuinely be due to something going on behind the scenes, but in the vast majority of cases people are just moving on, or contracts have come to an end.

No-one is 'doomed'.

1) he probably finished his work on the new Halo and/or a transition is in place, so this probably means nothing (good or bad) about the next Halo.

2) How is, as some people have suggested, this proof of how OR sucks? The aren't stealing people from game development. They are hiring people to do... game development. They SHOULD be recruiting experienced devs to work on how to show off the tech - that's exactly what MS FAILED to do with Kinect and why people don't take it seriously yet for gaming.

If you're going to launch a new type of hardware, nobody cares. What people do care about is the games they can play with it. So before you launch Kinect 3 or OR, you need impressive, polished games people can play to sell the tech. Tech demos at conferences aren't enough.

The only thing good I can say about Halo 4 is that it was a very, very pretty game.

Any bets that the ONLY reason Oculus hired him was for this very news story that we are reading right now, to generate buzz for an already-defunct idea?

Am i one of the very few people than that couldn't give a hell about the oculus?

I wouldn't even be able to wear it... (glasses / chronic cornea infection if i wear lenses)...
What the hell?!

At first I was hesitant when I heard that a primarily console-based game professional was being pulling into a prominent role on the project, but then I thought "It's just art; that shouldn't have a negative effect on the product because it is independent of the platform.".

I've set aside cash for OR. But I'm not yet impressed with the adoption of the product, or the focus. If they pull the rug out from core gamers who enjoy the product's potential with AAA caliber game support in favor of current mobile-focused products, I will consider the product a failure for my needs and just continue to game traditionally.

No doubt in my mind oculus will be the best vr set out there. But both luckey and zuckerberg aiming for mobile as the endgame if you have read interviews. Luckey even said something about tapping in to peoples brains or spines i believe...either way he is one creepy guy with crazy master of the universe visions. Ill probably buy one maybe more if they get good vs or coop games on it and then leave it for a competitor down the road.

This can't be serious. One more reason Oculus is starting to become a cancer in the industry.

It's certainly giving microtransactions a run for its money.

xantufrog

@flacker001 That's why they are hiring experienced developers for their team - to try to prove the worth with 1st party games. Motion control has not seen that pointed an effort. I think amazing experiences are available with VR tech, but I know where you are coming from: no way I'm buying unless they are showing me they can/are pulling it off

Only if there are three or more people leave a developer like Naughty Done.

@nbf4548 Before Facebook could only see what you wanted them to see. Now they can see everything you see. And you will gladly throw your money at this thing. Goodbye humanity, it was nice to know you all!

Exactly. Just like Media Molecule is rumored to be doing with a 3D massive world building game for Morpheus. If true...WOW. We will see in a month

@nazgoroth You can actually wear it over most glasses.  I suggest you try it at least once.  If you still don't give a damn about it so be it...however I've met bigger skeptics than you and when I had them try it out it took about 15 seconds for them to become a believer.  Now they can't stop bugging me about it.

@nazgoroth I'm right there with ya man. Though, contacts negate one of the problems, personally I dont really care one way or the other. Good for Facebook. And if it crushes the dreams of emotional gamers everywhere, all the better.

franken_stein

@wdma @xhawk27@domisbatman That's true but  all 200 employees don't actually hands on develop the games though. When 4-5 top level Employees mostly directors leave in a short time span after all of them were a major factor in releasing an award winning game the previous year, it is a cause for concern. 1 art director leaving after his input into the game they are working on is 99% complete isn't.

@origkillmachine When have I said I didn't care? Drop the straw man and the attitude, it isn't working and it won't anytime soon.

Carmack and Scott's efforts are a massive waste of time and money, given the adherence from devs thus far. Do you know what happens when Third Party publishers don't support a product? Get out of whatever cave you live in and look up the latest WiiU news to find out.

"pre-conceived" implies that I'm judging without facts. And it's not like games on facebook are infested with ads and microtransactions at all, aye? You can't possibly be serious about this.

Sad and funny indeed, and you have no one to blame for not understanding things but yourself.

@vader501st @origkillmachine

"people don't want crap attached to their faces"

So... why do you pretend to care in the first place then? Doesn't matter who owns Occulus, "people dont like crap strapped to their faces", am I right boyo?

your third point doesn't even make sense, lol. And your second is based on your pre-conceived notions of facebook, and projecting them onto their plans without so much as letting them announce them.

You are making it up as you go along, and its sad and a bit funny.

vader501st
vader501st

@origkillmachineYour straw man is just as weak as your reasoning. But it's not like reasoning is your strong suit in the first place.

Is it so hard to understand that: 1-people don't want crap attached to their faces, 2- Facebook's stance towards gaming is superficial and ill-conceived at best, and 3- Publishers NEED to adhere the tech in mass for it to go foward.

Get over yourself and deal with it, unless you're one of those Farmville addicts. Which wouldn't be surprising at all, given your douchebag behavior.
