Halloween movie director says Borderlands 2 is the best game on earth

John Carpenter says "there's no better game on the face of the earth."

Halloween and The Thing director John Carpenter is a big fan of first-person shooter video games, and his favorite, at least right now, is Gearbox Software's 2012 hit Borderlands 2.

"There's no better game on the face of the earth," Carpenter told Esquire.

How did Carpenter get into video games in the first place? He said that when his son started playing video games as child, he also got hooked.

"They're just so much fun. So I've kept abreast of everything over the years. I have four systems here in the house. The old Xbox and the new Xbox and the old PlayStation and the new one. So I play all the new games," Carpenter said.

He went on to say that he's not very interested in fantasy-themed games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. He would rather wield a gun. "I don't know, I like to shoot things," Carpenter said.

The next entry in the Borderlands series is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which launches this fall on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Looking for more John Carpenter video game reading? Check out GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb's interview with the director about his favorite games and more.

That was actually pretty interesting to learn. I never would have thought John Carpenter would be a gamer, let alone a Borderlands 2 fan boy. That's kinda neat. I'm betting he's a Maya or Krieg kinda guy. I was also pretty surprised that I found myself more interested in the video game opinions of a 66 year old horror movie producer/director then I am the opinions of Peter Molyneux, Cliffy B, and Hideo Kojima combined. I'm not sure if that's funny or sad.

Maybe I'll just go with both.

It's a great game for sure; I am playing now. I also like guns more than swords. So what's John Carpenter's take on Fallout?

Loved the first Borderlands and I am still adding some serous hours to that game.  The second not so much.  I would put Fallot 3, New Vegas, Borderlands, and Skyrim at the top of my top 10 games.  Borderlands 2 has some serious gun issues that keep me from playing the game.

If borderlands 2 is the best game on earth, that must mean that the guys over at Gear Box compensated for that by shifting focus from Aliens: Colonial Marines, and making it one of the worst games on the earth.. well maybe not the worst haha.

Sure if you wanna fall asleep.

Iv'e tried to like both Borderlands 1 and 2 but i get so bored of those games so fast since they offer no variety in the gameplay, all you do is just shoot stuff and pick up new random guns to shoot more stuff and it gets old fast.

I love shooters but every shooter tends to have something extra on the side to keep you intreasted , eather a good story or maybe simply the shooting aspect feels really good and satisfying but Borderlands has nothing going for it except for it's gimmick of 'A BAZILION GUNS!' sure it has alot of guns but most of em are not fun to use and mostly it's just slightly different stats and that's it,the story in Borderlands is non existant, the humor remindes me of that god awfull pewdipie on youtube and the areas are just dull wastelands with nothing much to do in them.

Correction, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete is the best game on earth, but ill rate Borderlands 2 in the top 10. =)

Well, Don't agree with him but those are good tastes nonetheless.

lol...good stuff....personally BL and BL2 are one step below the few games that are 10's....but a 9 ain't bad; funniest games out there....funny in an amazing way.

I've been about 16 hours into the GOTY-edition so far. Admittedly, it is quite fun, I really like it. Just hope I don't get bored with it before the single-player campaign is over...

Adults and smart people play games like Civilization or Xenonauts

It's nice to see people enjoying video games and John Carpenter a gamer is mind blowing O.O

I guess that makes sense, Borderlands 2 suffers from constant game wrecking, cheap ass re-spawning and Carpenter has been respawning his old ideas for years.

"borderlands 2 is the best game on Earth!"

Consider the source. Carpenter hasn't made a good movie since the 80's. I can think of a dozen games that bury Borderlands.

He was heavily involved with the making of "The Thing" for PS2. He said it's canon in terms of the film and is an official sequel. It's actually a pretty good game. You can get it for a few bucks on amazon

He was the master of horror movies and now he play games ...that's cool ...

NaturallyEvil

Cool.  I'm pretty sure he's over 70, so maybe the games can keep his brain active enough to make one last great film.  He'll always be the greatest director of the 1980s.

Wow 66 year old man playing video games. I thought that was a thing of legend and jokes.... John Carpenter just when up a level of awesome in my book.

While I don't agree with him this is still awesome. Never knew Carpenter was such a gamer.

Nah, it gets monotonous after 30 minutes. It offers nothing new after that. I was very disappointed after hearing so much praise for it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Personally, Borderlands 2 is one of the best games I've ever played. And, I feel its one of the best FPS titles from last gen, not to mention one of probably only a dozen, or so, truly worth playing alongside Fallout 3, BioShock Infinite, BioShock and DX:HR.

Everything else tended to be cookie cutter CoD crap.

But BL2 had absolutely perfect and tight controls, great graphics paired with superb animation, an amazing script paired with spot on voice acting and just a really fun premise. Not to mention the co-op is always great and the game, even without the awesome DLC, had great length and replay value to it - something you rarely see in games.

Furthermore, Gearbox even did DLC right... where you see devs like BioWare charge $10-15 bucks for, what seems like, cut content that lasts 2-3 hours, or Bethesda charge a whoppin' $20 promising hours upon hours of content that actually lasts 5, you see Gearbox charge $30 for $45 bucks worth of content that lasted the hours, upon hours, promised.

I'm gushing, of course. But rightly so, as this game was superb start to finish. Anyone that argues against that fact is just hatin' to be hatin'. And, probably needs to go back to their grey, green and cookie cutter military pew pew shooters.

He needs to get his ass off the video games, and get making Big Trouble in Little China 2.

@mari2kde  Is that your clever way of telling us that you're a huge fan of Borderlands 2, or does the liquor store down the street from where you grew up still offer "Buy 2 get 1 free!" discounts for expectant mothers?

@mari2kde This guy gave horror genre some of its biggest masterpieces. What have you done today?

Oh yes; posting childish crap on Gamespot. Such an endeavor.

@mari2kde  Ok "adult" man, I'll just sit in my corner and play my "kids" games like Child of Light, Kirby Triple Deluxe and Mario Kart 8. You enjoy yourself and your "adult" games...

Um no. No director can make any licensed movie they wish simply because they liked it. There's all kinds of red tape.

neowarrior793

@Drkr_Zen  there are very VERY few things you can complain about BL2. other then people taking loot and the first season pass kerfuffle. the gameplay is superb, the guns are amazing, the script for the game is just funny as hell.

RobDev

@sandfox80  I hope he doesn't. As awesome as that film was it was a child of the 80's i'm afraid a sequel now would just tarnish the original for me. Particularly since his recent run of movies have been shite.

@playstationzone  To each his own. I personally felt FFVII is one of the worst in the series, while Skyrim is just a glitchy mess.

@Gravity_Slave My comment was supposed to come off as sarcastic, as in "Half-Life 3 confirmed", etc.

@neowarrior793 @Drkr_Zen What's hilarious is that almost every time I do hear someone complain about BL2, it's that "it's too long".  And then turn around and complain about how the next COD campaign is only 5 hours long.

@Drkr_Zen @nandosmc  I never bashed his opinion but rather corrected his spelling error. In fact I too think that MGS is quite good.

@DeFiLeDTitan @Trev9421  I had so many issues with New Vegas, particularly the DLC. It was almost enough to get me to stop playing it.

@Trev9421  I never had any problems with any of the ES games or Fallouts. Except the time Megaton sploded before I even went there. That was interesting.

@Trev9421  you must be. don't get me wrong i havent had too many but it's prone to locking up on occasion.
