Halfbrick preps whole slate of PSP Minis

Australian developer is bringing its line of Xbox Live Indie Games to Sony's new line of bite-sized portable titles.

by

Sony's PSP Minis program was just unveiled this week at GamesCom, but it's already being supported by one developer in a big way. Halfbrick Games has announced an initial slate of four games for Sony's lineup of small-scale downloadable titles, spearheaded by two of its titles from Xbox Live Indie Games (formerly Community Games).

Halfbrick Echoes is an action game with a puzzling twist.

From Microsoft's downloadable game service, Halfbrick will be bringing the physics-based Halfbrick Blast-Off and puzzle action game Halfbrick Echoes to PSP Minis. The developer has said it will make system-specific changes to the games for their PSP debuts, but it did not offer any insight as to what those would be.

Additionally, the PSP Minis program will host two more Halfbrick releases: the top-down multiplayer shooter Halfbrick Zombies and Halfbrick Rocket Racing, in which players fly vehicles around treacherous tracks by firing off left and right thrusters independently. Halfbrick Rocket Racing and Halfbrick Zombies will also be appearing on unspecified other platforms.

While Halfbrick has garnered some acclaim for its Xbox Live Indie Games, the developer also works in mainstream game development. It created the DS edition of last year's Avatar - The Last Airbender: Into the Inferno, as well as 2007's aerial combat game Heatseeker on the PSP.

"tomcrole" i agree with you this will only really work if sony back up this and the psp 100%. so far sony just seem to be dragging the psp along and not taking much interest in the machine. i seriously doubt it will be anywhere as good with apps like apple but it could go somewhere wiv a bit of interest and efffort from sony.

Sony are just shooting themselves in the foot if everyone who has a psp buys this all the UMDs are gone to waste why not keep with that format but make the UMDs hold more storage, why didnt Sony just wait and released the psp2 or is this the psp2?

Sony , sony ,sony... you still havent learnt yet, that if you want apps for the psp, you need to let homebrew developers access the cpu of psp go, i no this is risky, but apple give out development kits and thats why people are developing for iphone and thats why iphones apps exists!! sony cant alone make all the apps for psp, thier are apps like, psptube, psp adhoc messenger, psp adhoc file transfer, all these beutiful homebrews would be great if they could be released under PSN AND remade by sony to work on OFW !!

The games must have a resonable price,AND a resonable gameplay for the price.

too bad i can't use any of my current PSP's accessories on the new PSP Go.. not even my UMDs! Now I see why the new PSP Go doesn't have the dual thumb sticks or touch-screen.. don't need those to play these Minis games!

Sorry Sony, but mimicking Apple will not work for you. Apple has a branding that no one can touch, let alone their early adopter user base that will buy anything with an "i" in front of it at launch. They are masterminds of micro and macro transactions and copying them with the Mini/Nano surname will only make yourselves look foolish, let alone PSP/App store comparisons. Sony, face it, youre just not trendy...

So far, these are all crap. If Sony intends to make Aps, they need to see what the I-pod Touch and i-Phone is doing. They have Apps for Twitter, Facebook, they have free games!!!! That is what the Apps should be like on PSP. But maybe, just maybe, this isn't the PSP Go's rumored App store.....

These minis sound like DSi ware games which are a bit hit and miss but reasonably priced. Here's hoping Sony have got it "right" too.

Price has to be reasonable or nobody is going to buy those games.

It might do well, but I honestly don't think it will do any hurt to the DS market. The DS had the top sales in anything game related, especialy in Japan. Like I said, the PSP Minis (horrible name by the way :P ) might do better than anything, but judging on how well the DS sales are, I just don't see it happening. (The DSi has already sold pretty well, and its not even the holidays yet)

They better not overdo this, and the price better be reasonable.

I agree. It is a good idea, but the pricing better be reasonable.

MiniS would have been better if it involved titles that were cross-compatible with PS3/PSP, both in functionality and game save data. Buy one copy, get access to both. Would be perfect for those of us that game on the go, but prefer to sit infront of our TV to game at home. Like the way PSX games are handled on PSN.

As long as the prices aren't outrageous... ...I'm in!

I hope Sony does great quality control with this endeavor. The last thing we need is for PSP Mini to end up like XBL Indie Games and iPhone games

Sounds good to me. Been wanting some mini games for my psp for a while. I don't care for the "arcade" games being re-released on the psp and it costing 20 bucks. It's cool that you get like 20 titles with it, making it a buck per game, but I pass. This is a great idea to keep sony alive. I don't see anything about ps3 integrating though which is a minor bummer.
