Hackers attack online fundraiser supplying games to U.S. troops abroad

Operation Supply Drop’s site is down, but you can still donate.

Operation Supply Drop, an organization that provides games to U.S. troops serving abroad, says that it came under a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack shortly after starting its third annual 8-Bit Salute event this morning.

“Yes, 27-minutes after the official 0800 CST start time of the 3rd Annual 8-Bit Salute, some nefarious creatures took our site down with a DDoS attack,” the organization said in a statement. “Odds are this will happen again over the next 24 hours.”

At the time of writing, the organization’s official site was still down. However, you can still contribute by sending donations to DONATIONS@operationsupplydrop.org through PayPal, or by buying a poster from Rooster Teeth, which will only be available during its 8-Bit Salute stream. All proceeds from the poster will go directly to Operation Supply Drop.

You can also buy a $20 8-bit shirt from SilencerCo, $5 of which will go to Operation Supply Drop.

The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog is also promoting the cause today by playing Uncharted 3’s multiplayer mode with fans. They’ve even reset the game’s leaderboard in honor of the event and will be giving away Naughty Dog games, DLC, and other items to players who donate the most. You can read more about Naughty Dog’s participations in the event on the PlayStation Blog.

“This is a battle,” Operation Supply Drop said. “Let's show the world what happens when you mess with Gamers!”

Yet it still went better than last month's "drones for xbones" charity event...

I don't usually get involved with all this comment section shit-fest but I do think a lot of these comments are very ignorant they show just how uninformed the average person in America really is. Hating US troops because they are doing things you may disagree with will not solve the problem. Believe me I do not like the US government, it is corrupt, broken and it uses whatever and whoever it can to further its own goals. However showing hate to the troops is just really spiteful and unnecessary and frankly makes you look like an ass. They are doing their job whether they or you like it or not. It is easy to say oh you should not do this or do that from behind a computer screen but its much harder to really stand up for what you believe in real life. So many people have no idea how global politics works or how history has sculpted the world into what it is now. You can (and should) hate war as it is the worst of human behaviour. However hating the warrior will not stop conflicts from happening. Many people don't know anything past what they see on CNN or what they read in net forums. I won't profess an undying love and loyalty to the military but it is a far cry to blame them for all of the worlds ills. If you want to blame people you need only look towards your nearest Senator or Congressman. They along with their millionaire and billionaire buddies are the ones who are pulling the strings. If you really want change then they are the ones that need harassing. Not soldiers in the field.

All these people complaining about US politics on the comments section of a gaming website.. Lol And people wonder why nothing changes. What a joke

the ignorance on here is beyond belief, you sit behind your computers trying to tell people how they world could be a better place and how troops are killing innocent people etc, you arrogant egotistical self righteous wasters, I know why don't you leave you fkin basement and go out and help to make this world a better place instead of doing fk all and hoping someone else will do it for you, just because mummy has done everything for you all your life.....and this isn't a dig at everyone I think its pretty obvious if you read some of the disgraceful comments on here....some of you talk as if the troops are at fault, you are forgetting its the institution that makes their choices for them you cannot blame them they have no choice but to do as they are told or face prison, and not your average holiday camp prison either, yes some conflicts may not be justified in the eyes of the people looking in from the outside but the fact remains that when push comes to shove if you ever got invaded these guys are going to be putting their lives on the line to defend and protect you while you will probably be hiding in a corner or behind them begging them to help you and keep you safe, I wonder what you would be saying about them then?

And no I have never been in the armed forces but I have a lot of respect for the people that are and are willing to die for our freedoms and protection.

Let's see.... they volunteer to kill innocent people for one of the worst governments on the planet. Should I feel bad for them?

I'd bet a thousand bucks the U.S. government DOSed this thing, to generate anger from the public against dissidents. If they can plan something like Operation Northwoods, they can do a DOS attack.

regardless of if you agree with what the government has our troops doing, it is still a shame to take away from them. I can't imagine there is some vast majority of troops who wake up every morning thinking "I want to kill people and steal stuff today" I believe a great many of them just want to do what they can to make america better. what they do to achieve that end is up to whomever is being elected.

@puffnbillys420 You'll give them publicity and triumphalist gratification thus invariably causing whatever screeching pain that you'd have to respond to happiness with in order to do something like this?

@Leefx  such idealism for a better world wasted in the ilussion that being in an army of country that fabriquates excuses to use the missiles Cheney and Rumsfeld pushed to pay up is something to be proud of. Only the ones watching your ass from inside your country have real honor, everyone else is corrupted by the power the diplomatic inmmunity USA pushes down the other countries or by how really barbaric and tough the real war is. Check looks of any soldier that's been trough that, all PTSD lately has been only to secure natural resources

"arrogant egotistical self righteous"

Take a look at your own post and learn how respect toher people's opinions.

No its a volunteer army "just following orders" is always the excuse. When a crime s commited one cant just wash their hands because they were "ordered to." If your boss tells you to do something illegal or wrong do you think that automatically absolves you of blame?

Im sick of nobody taking any responsibility or being held accountable in this country it's time for people stop making excuses.

@Leefx Don't ever think that US soldiers are on foreign soil to protect citizens. That would be so very naive. Every country the US and it's allies enters is politically motivated (to secure oil, precious metals etc). Yes they do a very tough job, but they are just pawns and nothing more. Certainly not the "heroes" they are made out to be.

@PJ688  Even if this holds true, you should expect most of them to think they are fighting for what's right. Just like most terrorist in the world are mislead into believing they are doing the right thing.

@XNEXUS666X "The dream" is to live at peace and be tolerant of others. US Troops are very much living the opposite, it's more of a nightmare. Being told who to kill, following orders, disrupting families, neighborhoods, cities, and countries.

Rahn1908
Rahn1908

@Dagus0323  U cant make anyone great by invading others. What u r making by that is the invaders loathsome and the invaded miserable. If there truly are soldiers that believe they serving a purpose out there, other than making money for the corporations who control the army, then that simply goes to show either the embarrasingly low lvl of education in the US or the frightengly high lvl of propaganda... Or an unhealthy dosage of both...

If u still feel charitable and giving, I'd suggest throwing a dime towards the victims of the American war machine...

XNEXUS666X
XNEXUS666X

@enoughofthis It's easy to see when you look at how it all started, the genocide of the Native Americans, slavery of the Africans. Africa is still the continent that has it's natural resources stolen at the highest rate to this day. The Native Americans say each race was was given guardianship over a certain element, white people have fire, and we still like to keep things burning, look inside most everything we do and you'll find a fire, as the fire burns it spreads and consumes, just like us. We wont be happy until we've burnt this whole planet up.

@zpluffy  yeah well, they never came to Argentina or Chile in the 70s to stop dictatorships from killing their own people, it was Reagan plan after all.

@johnman05 @enoughofthis @71kommandoringo  9/11 is like Pearl Harbor massacre: they let it happen to have a reason to encourage people to go to war. You can't check that out in America, the few that had the balls are dead or exiled, and no news cannel will talk about it,
