Guild Wars 2 sells 2 million

ArenaNet's pay-once MMORPG crosses new sales milestone after digital sales reopen.

by

Guild Wars II may have been in development for years, but it's not taking nearly that long to reach commercial success. Publisher NCSoft announced today that the pay-once massively multiplayer online role-playing game has sold 2 million units since launch on August 28.

Guild Wars 2 has gone double platinum.

NCSoft said the game reached double platinum status after first-party digital sales were reopened. These were shut off for a short period to "maintain an optimal player experience."

Before Guild Wars II even launched, it sold over 1 million units through pre-purchases, accruing peak concurrency user figures of over 400,000. For more on Guild Wars II, check out GameSpot's review.

Hell yeah!  Who really cares if it gets the numbers like wow does?  It would be nice if it did but who knows.  It is a better game than wow overall considering it has much better open world pvp than wow.  I know the queue times are long, but I am sure they are working on it.  My biggest turn off from wow was the fact it didn't have very good open world pvp at all.  Mist of Gaydoria is Kung fu Panda meets wow.

GW1 player since launch year.. patiently waited for GW2.. was not dissapointed.. congrats Anet.. i hope they continue selling stand-alone expansions just like in the first game.. hoping for a re-invisioned Cantha or Elona  in the near future.. for now, the game is good for what it is

It's not perfect but it's a solid, fun and yet complex MMO.  I'm not surprised to see it sell so quickly.  Definitely not as casual-friendly as WoW, so I do not expect it to reach Warcraft numbers...but we have a real competitor that shouldn't fizzle and fade like Warhammer, SWTOR, RIFT, etc.

I tried to buy this game, it was sold out EVERYWHERE!  It must be a good game for those type of results.  I look forward to trying it.

I love how everybody (but the haters, of course) is happy with this game doing well. It's not revolutionizing but it's a fun MMO that we've been waiting for years.

GW2 is a very fun MMORPG, the best in years. Sure beats sitting around in a city waiting for god knows what or a timer to expire so we can pvp.

If WOW had no sub fee, how much better would it be than this game? Honestly.

What's the impact on other MMOs ?  I'd imagine those 2 million subs used to play WoW or SWToR before they switched to Guild Wars?

Good for Guild Wars 2. I'm pleased for them. This pay once model with completely optional micro-transactions is definitely the one we want the MMO community to adopt.

Other than the bannings, I know people seem to love this game. :P

I wish I hadn't waited so long to look into this game and passed on the first one.  I figured a F2P game wouldn't be all that fun.  I was wrong.  This game is a blast!

Well done ANET :)  Now keep working out those little (and yes they truly are minute) bugs and we'll be even happier  :D

@TeamAuthority It is also funny how people on Guild Wars 2 are saying they're glad they're finally free of WoW's monthly fees. But smal bits of personal experiences don't tell the full story.

Fact is that GW2 is a very popular game as well as a critical and commercial succes. Only time will tell what this means for WoW.

However I imagine most consumers would agree that it would be good if GW2 makes Blizzard thinks twice about their outrages fees.

@Cashmoney007 GW2 is not a better game than WoW... The controls are terrible, and by that I mean there's a delay on most of them, you can't jump kite, the camera is slow as hell and it sweeps around even after you stop moving your mouse, momentum isn't maintained while in mid-air.

And GW2 doesn't have open world pvp. It's a huge battleground.

@PacoTaco weird IMO GW2 blows WoW away when it comes to catering to casual crowd.  instant travel, simplified skills, short fights 99% of the time, many bosses not even requiring teamwork or a plan, when you die you get a chance to get up again, Tradepost that automates every single thing any player could want and you can even reserve stuff, resource gathering/treasure/experience division that makes stepping on someone else's toes impossible.   I wouldn't call most of them faults though, they're pretty damned awesome and things  MMOs should have tried before now.

@MasterOfSprites i was mad at first,  then realized it's a good thing they're actually halting sales to prevent major problems that come with getting in over their heads as far as server stability.  it was a surreal moment

 @Chonsie

??? It takes hours sometimes to get in wvwvw, it takes seconds to pop a bg in WOW. So don't know where you get that....not saying WOW is better, just that I can pvp quicker, and I have the option to have REAL WORLD PVP in WOW. I like them both, but still give it to WOW.................................for now.

@PetJel yeah, i thought gamespot will give GW2 8 or 8,5 their favorite number

@Thirdrail1 yeah and the microtransanctions don't affect the core of the game (more esthetic, fun items)

 @AnakinSW

It's not Free-to-Play. It's $60 for the standard edition. It just doesn't have a subscription fee. That's like calling Madden, Call of Duty, StarCraft, Halo, Darksiders, or any other game that doesn't have a $15 monthly subscription fee--which is darn near all games--"F2P."League of Legends, Age of Empires Online, and Planetside 2--those are examples of F2P.

@nechiken I don't have any of those problems so don't know what game your playing.  Am I really supposed to be impressed by Pokemon and Pandas as well as farming?  GW2 does have open world pvp because it is this huge area where you can actually take castles.  If wow did something like that then I might be back but was not impressed by their pvp and still not.  GW2 is the first game that has really impressed me with their pvp since playing LIneage 2.  I felt even Aion had better pvp than wow.  You have fun with your Pandas and catch them all Pokemon game  I will have fun with events and awesome pvp as well as an interesting story.  This topic is old anyways so surprised you just found it now?

jourideblaere
jourideblaere

@terminus  @Chonsie yeah me and my mate would have liked the option of Real world pvp but i guess the game is made the way it's meant to be played with others. Let's hope they'll implement duelling wherever, whenever you want. Enjoying the hell out of the game though, massive orgy for your buck!

jourideblaere
jourideblaere

@Thirdrail1 * and you can get every single item in the microtransaction store anyway with in-game non-real money!

@gamingfrendly  @SolidTy they 1 strike bans are people who forgo common sense though, and small offenses are issued warnings first

@gamingfrendly  @SolidTy seems to be the difference between annoying childish spam/hate/attention seeking/trolls and a game that you can actually enjoy

Kickable
Kickable

@jourideblaere  @terminus  @Chonsie to be fair open world PVP in WoW doesn't work in the satisfactory way most people want it to.  it's rare or you're getting one-shotted by someone who is the farthest thing from being an even match.
