Guild Wars 2 Impressions

The debut trailer was unveiled at GamesCom 2009, and ArenaNet was on hand to provide some more juicy details.

by

Fans of Guild Wars have been patiently waiting for a full-blown sequel to the free-to-subscribe massively multiplayer online role-playing game, and from what we saw in its debut trailer, it certainly looks worth the wait. Guild Wars 2 takes fans back to the fantasy world of Tyria and takes place 250 years after the events in Guild Wars, following the awakening of the powerful elder dragons, described by NCsoft as pure "engines of destruction" in the game. If that's not daunting enough, the dragons have also enslaved an undead army to help them in their quest to corrupt and consume Tyria. The four playable races--humans, Charr, Norn, and Asura--have banded together to stop the dragons in their quest and are joined by some extra help.

The Sylvari are an all-new playable race in Guild Wars 2. The plant-based creatures aren't "humanoid in the way we know," says lead content creator Jeff Grubb. According to Grubb, they're quite different from the other races and don't understand the culture and logic of the other races. He explains that they're unified as a culture and share the common dream of eradicating the dragons bent on wreaking havoc on the world of Tyria. Sylvari are born fully aware and are characterised as a noble race. Despite this, not all Sylvari have good intentions, and certain splinter groups have arisen to challenge their way of life. The last piece of information we could gather is that, like their owners, Sylvarian armour and weapons are also organic and are grown from roots and leaves rather than being forged with fire.

The other major feature in Guild Wars 2 is the addition of playable underwater areas, which was hinted at in the trailer. According to NCsoft's Chris Lye, this will grant players substantially more "freedom of movement" and the freedom to explore Tyria's landmasses and the oceans below. Lye says the ability to explore Tyria's underwater world, and the complexities that go along with that, is one of the reasons it's taking a while to develop the game. The team didn't go into details on how this new experience will affect gameplay, but we're excited to see how they'll incorporate this into the game.

The Sylvari join Guild Wars as a playable race.

As you can see in the trailer, there's some beautiful concept art at work, and the team plans to use this in the game "in one way or another," as a storytelling tool. "It's a major component to our visual style," says lead art designer Daniel Dociu. The entire trailer was generated in-house at ArenaNet, and Dociu says it has helped crystallise the direction in which they wanted to take the sequel. "The trailer is very representative of the overall sensibility of the game" says Dociu. ArenaNet now has a graphics engine that they feel finally does justice to the concept art, according to Lye, and is something they believe hasn't really been possible until now. While the gameplay footage in the trailer is certainly far from final, it's a promising first look at the much-anticipated massively multiplayer online game, and fans will have to sit tight until more details are released.

Guild Wars 2 has yet to be given a firm release date. For more of our GamesCom 2009 coverage, visit gamescom.gamespot.com.

I was going to pick up Guild Wars, but saw this... can't wait. No subscription fee?! That's incredible! And better yet, if the GameStop website is indeed correct, this will be launching on my birthday!

@_distemper Since when isn't it good vs evil? There are very few RPGs that aren't from that same mold american or japanese alike. in fact, the only one I can think of that isn't good vs evil is final fantasy 12, which both developers, critics and other gamers agree was more about just a human empire taking over another, and that was one of those JRPGs you apparently hate so much. Furthermore I think you only have your panties in a twist over factions and nightfall because of the inclusion of Assassins as a class. and even then that was only factions, nightfall had a more....Ancient Egyptian feel to it.

The PvE in Guild Wars(with the exception of Prophecies) seemed a little like a hash job. Personally, I also detest JRPGs and anything that vaguely resembles them, and I found that the second two campaigns got closer and closer to the JRPG motif of the dashing heroes in a black and white world with zero moral ambiguity and an utter commitment to their goal: To destroy EVIL!11!!one11! Which, I find, contrived and lame.

I played guild wars back in the year after release and i remember a split down the middle of pvp and pve, but the general consesus was that the game's strength was pvp.

Yeah to the Mac people (I'm one of you) just use bootcamp.. I play games like Crysis fine in bootcamp, there's no slowdowns.

regix416_basic, Guild Wars is big on PvP. The whole PvE experience is a way to get gear and skills for PvP, though many players (like me) never bothered with the PvP aspects of the game. In fact, you can skip the PvE part entirely and make a max-level character strictly for PvP. In the early years of GW they held worldwide PvP tournaments, had big prizes and really hyped it up.

@jmrwacko: As far as I can remember, Guild Wars wasn't PvP. It was a straight Explore the world, follow quests and do pretty much whatever you want game much like Elder Scrolls. However, 2 might be more mission-oriented... just from watching the trailer alone, it seemed to look like it was going to be that way. But I could be wrong. But I though PvP meant and still means Player Vs. Player. As far as I know and can remember, Guild Wars was never about PvP and was more about world exploration. An overall question I have is... Is any past history needed in order to know what is going on? I didn't get that far into Nightfall... or into any of the other games for that matter. So will I be hopelessly lost for 2? This is probably a stupid question and I probably shouldn't even be asking it.

I'm getting this game no matter what. Nothing will stop me!! Ha ha. This game looks awesome. Especially the graphics. I know this game will be great but even if it isn't I'm still getting it.

I will buy this even if it sucks just to pay homage to the first game. You rock ArenaNet. You sure know how to make a game. (I hope it doesn't suck BTW).

in response to all of you mac users, I just created a boot-camp partition, installed all of the proper drivers once installed, and I am playing guild wars at least 3 to 4 hours a day, remember, the OS runs natively, and guild wars looks awsome.. because it's not a graphics hog. I am very impressed with how smooth the game runs. Trust me, I love my mac, but game publishers for some reason do not want to put the developement cost towards the mac platform, so for now.. just load boot-camp and enjoy

Will GW2 be any different than Aion other than having instanced PvP and dual class mechanics? I'll have to follow this game's development some more.

Guild Wars was a great game (I only played Prophecies though) but I thought sometimes the solo play or partying, one of my favorite parts of MMO's was a little shadowed by a PvP system that wasn't all that different from other games in the genre. The sequel though sounds as though it will be a more PvE based game, much to my enjoyment and I will put store some money in my room starting now for this game. I'm really looking forward to it and the persistant world, hopefully a level cap increase and more armor sets.

The trailer isn't a finished product so picture the same trailer as a finished product running on a 2gig vid card with 4 to 8 gig ram direct x 10. Need I say more? GW 1 has killer art graphics, GW 2 has a whole new engine, it can run on direct x 10 but not require it to play and all this as free as always. Did I mention entire underwater areas to explore and play In. Enemies such as the Naga but we now can fight underwater. This will set the bar higher than ever before for all other MMO's. This will be the MMO that changed everything...

I loved the first one, and started playing it again after a few months off. I want to be Charr, so I can pounce on my victims, RAWR. But seriously, I'm pumped for this game, I hope they add more in the expansions, like new races and stuff, MAN IM EXCITED XD.

WOW is good and dont get under the impression that i'm a WOW hater but GW2 looks like it has a chance to kill WOW. The new expansion for WOW isnt really adding anything new, sure its changing alot of there old content but I personally think it's WOW's last breath. WOW is at the end of its life cycle. And as the life cycle goes on new life will breath in our world and we have to acknowledge that GW2 maybe be that new life.

The WoW has been the "best" for so long that the Hard-Core players just can't accept the fact that FAR better games are coming. Personally WoW looks like a kid's arcade when compared to Guild Wars. @evaunit2 I can tell you that any Real Guild Wars player can recognize it's graphics, concept and even environment. It is absolutely different from other games... When you play Guild Wars the game involves you with amazing graphics, great skills (They make you think, not only click the buttons like crazy), the "philosophy" of non-grinding provides pure entertainment which don't hypnotize you to play 24/7 to get a high level and the Hollywood type of storyline. Well, for those that don't believe, just wait till Guild Wars 2 release. while you wait, visit their official sites and wiki to learn more. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2 http://www.guildwars2.com/en/

@ evaunit2 Im sure WoW will do just fine. They too will end up revamping their graphics. They are smart ppl. And they know that to appeal to the younger crowd (preteen and teens) they will have to do some. The younger crowd is coming into this and seeing the down grade on visuals. Its just like that nice shiny red new car. It catches the eye. Take the ps3 slim for example. It sells!!!!! The sales are out the roof! Its the same product but just looks different. Its sad but ppl are just that easy. There are hard core WoWers out there. I understand that. So WoW will be there for years and yrs to come.

Compared to what I saw in the trailer...this sequel has exceeded every expectation I had of Guild Wars 2. I never expected the game to look that great and have an even better story and artwork than the first one. IMO...this game looks FAR better and epic than WoW or any other MMO I've seen in my life. Definitely going to buy it on it's release.

Cant wait gonna be awesome to have Champions online ( tommorow woooot), FF14, ToR and now this loved the first one and this will be even better no doubt and I cant wait to hear more on it. On another note this probably wont kill WoW as the fact that its already on its death bed, the announcment of Cataclysm shows that. Adding more and more ridiculous features and more than likely butchering gameplay and immersion even more. Whats next Blizzard? next expansion we can roll a penguin shaman that rides a unicycle?

Nosferatu2894

@Kimarous Well it's really too early for them to be releasing the gameplay, they're probably still in development on it. More than anything else, this trailer is an announcement: No, the game's not cancelled Yes, we're working on it Yes, we know what direction we're taking.

The first time I saw the Guild Wars 2 trailer (I saw it at the official website) I was completely blown away. Same here azureblade89, I've tried many mmos, and Guild Wars has always been, and always will be my favourite. I just wish that it would come out sooner. Alas, I know the longer they take, the better it will be. :) It's just hard waiting. :)

azureblade89
azureblade89

Instant buy for me, loved guild wars; i've tried just about every other mmo out there and it's always been leading me back to GW. The f2p makes it so you can take a month or two break without feeling like you've got to wait till you get out of some kind of contract. I'm going to be playing Aion until this releases, after that...it'll be GW2 all the way.

xKratosAurionx
xKratosAurionx

This is exactly how i hoped it would look. The original guild wars lost its grip for me after almost 3 years of playing. But i will definately be buying this, i thought Aion was gonna be the next best thing, but i beta tested that and it felt too much like other mmo's. This will be groundbreaking. Ncsoft, put it off as long as you want, i want an amazing mmo i can play for years. Oh, and if i hear ANYONE compare this game to WoW or say its a clone, i will cut you. "I've been waiting! For a game like you.. to come into, my life." :D

Tundra, yes it was "announced" months ago, but there was no gameplay footage or trailers on the game whatsoever. This trailer was on August 22. That's the day after Cataclysm was announced. There's no way this is a coincidence.

Mackleor, that's just not true. The game was announced _months_ ago, we just got the new trailer.

The artwork looks great...and I am definitely looking for a new MMO to play, but not in a fantasy setting. I'm gonna wait for the new Star Wars..go Bioware!

tundra_no_caps
tundra_no_caps

The art looked beautiful, but I wonder how it'll work inside the game. In the original, art wasn't great. Narration was a bit clipped, with sentences cut short rather than end in a manner that could lead to the next, and the music score was nice. But all that is besides the point. I want to know how game-play will work :)

Malckeor

Hmm, that's odd. WoW's next expansion was just announced last week and now Arena.net announces GW2. I think someone's trying to kill WoW....it's sad, everyone who said they were going to do that has made sucky games. Age of Conan, Warhammer...and in the coming months, Aion and Star Wars TOR are all going to fail as well. Guild Wars 2 is going to come the closest, but not succeed. I'm a fan of guild wars in every way; I've played since Prophecies came out, but WoW has always been better. PS: Can't wait for this game.
