Guild Wars 2 console version in 'preparation stage'

NCsoft confirms "small development team" working to expand fantasy MMO game beyond PC platform.

Guild Wars 2 is marching ever closer to its 2012 launch on the PC, and it appears as if a console version is within the realm of possibility as well. NCsoft confirmed for GameSpot today that a "small development team" is at work on a console version of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

Guild Wars 2 may establish chapter houses on Microsoft's and Sony's consoles.

The confirmation follows remarks made by NCsoft during a postearnings conference call this week (and spotted by GuildWarsInsider). According to an NCsoft executive speaking via translator, the console version is "in the preparation stage." Specific platforms and a targeted launch window were not revealed.

NCsoft noted that its primary focus remains on the PC version of Guild Wars 2.

Last month, Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet confirmed that it plans to launch the PC game this year. The company also said that a small beta is expected to begin in March, with a wider trial phase to follow in April.

Guild Wars 2 puts players into a persistent fantasy word that is driven by a range of dynamic events. When Guild Wars 2 launches later this year it will cost a fee up front but will not require a monthly paid subscription to continue playing.

I still don't believe this, and I'm disappointed Gamespot would just copy news from a shady site with facts that seem really really inaccurate and uncomfirmed. In the same article the "source" mentioned Guild Wars 3, which is complete bullshit at this point.

Here's a question. If you start playing on PC and the 360 version comes out, would you be able to transfer characters between versions?

XanderZane

Yeah, I know about XBL. I plan of playing GW2 on the PC. I always thought MMO should stay with PC until consoles got to the put where it could handle an MMO. I never wanted FFXI on the 360 or EverQuest in PS2. People still played those games though.

emperiox
emperiox

@XanderZane Probably not. You'll have to pay for Xbox live though.

XanderZane
XanderZane

@emperiox @XanderZane There's absolutely NO monthly fee. They will pay for the servers with storage slots, upgrades, extra character slots...etc. The only thing you HAVE to pay for is the game itself. Pretty great deal for an MMO, imo. Try the first GW...it's REALLY fun. ************************************************************** I played the first one on the PC. I was wondering if there would be fees on the console versions. I would think not, but we all know the Microsoft & Sony may want a cut of the profits. I know the PC version will be free to play just like the original game.

@Sinex1983 you were the one who started the personal attacks. Lol hippocrit your everything you claim to hate. Sad. And nobody likes an elitist. They think they are better but really their gear can't can't any better than the best everyone else can get. Not to mention the same skills as everyone else. My attacks must have struck home for you to be so upset. Sound like a big mmorpg crybaby to me. Gtfo

sinex1983
sinex1983

@Azazel29 Shadowrun being unpopular likely didn't have any effect on PC players having an easier time shooting their console counterparts in their faces. Brilliant logic, Holmes. And as for my experience with WoW: yeah, I was definitely an elitist who disliked interacting with the proles and other teenage dirtbags because I was a competitive raider. So you can see why I wouldn't want to repeat the experience in a new game. Yeah I could've been more tactful with my assertions about the essential douchebaggian nature of console players, but this being the Internet...sweeping generalizations and exaggeration abounds. And as for your other very big-boy-pants personal attacks...you're illustrating my point quite brilliantly, little man.

Azazel29
Azazel29

@Sinex1983 And it looks like people just don't like you. Maybe because you act just as childish in games as you "think" other people do. Let's be honest. If you quit WoW complaining it was because of 11 year old smacktards. (and you complain about my grammar. At least I use real words), it's probably because so many people didn't like you that it ruined the game for you. Just like your going to do to yourself in this game. Honestly you sound like you would be horrible to play with. Given that this game isn't heavy on partying together in the traditional sense it seems you may not have to worry about playing with anyone in particular because people will just be doing their thing around you. So they don't bother you. And luckily you won't be bothering them

Azazel29
Azazel29

@sinex1983 This isn't the place to worry about spelling. Even though I didn't misspell anything just used abbreviations because I am typing this on a cell phone. Was shadowrun any good. No. Horrible comparison with a horrible game. Your anger alone shows us who is immature and a douchebag pc fanboy. Isn't 29 years old enough for you to have grown up just a little bit? Probably still live in moms basement don't ya. Enough said. And in this case I think the game will be made to a much higher quality. Can't see it being that big of a deal. When it's out and I get my ass handed to me by pc players I'll believe u. Chances are though that the side with more players/ better gear/ better strategy, is going to win. Not the guy that might be a split second faster if he doesn't hit the wrong key.

sinex1983
sinex1983

@Azazel29 "U pc players just have to trust that their are some mature console players and to be honest u won't even know we r on a console." That sentence and its terrible spelling & grammar (and others like it) is why I don't want to play with console people. Any assertion that console gamers can go toe-to-toe with PC gamers is clearly coming from someone who never played Shadowrun: it was the first game that allowed console players to play against PC players and the results were universally one-sided and, frankly, devastating -- there's a reason why there haven't been any games of note like it since. Console communities are measurably inferior to PC-centric communities -- this is not up for discussion.

@-Carge- Anyone who doesn't see a parallel between the behavior of WoW kids and console kids is freaking blind, dude. Immaturity, lack of patience, generally low intelligence levels, and a host of other attributes most generally associated with Call of Duty d-bags. So yes: I left a PC game because it was feeling too much like a console game.

@iloveyourface I wrote a (simple but functional) 3d game engine from the ground up in C++ and DirectX, so I have a pretty good idea how a game is put together. Game logic, AI, scene management and physics (though less so with the physics now a lot can also be offloaded onto the GPU) consume most of the processing these days in a game. In an MMO, most of the game logic and AI is on the server due to it's nature, so an MMO is a borderline dumb-terminal of the gaming world. Why do you say they are processor heavy?

iloveyourface

@Raeldor mmo's aren't processor heavy?.... that's a good one! :D

Why the crap is the Vita being discussed on this article?

Raeldor
Raeldor

@zaxafreon Are you sure about that? Memory cards for the Vita go up to 32GB. Guild Wars was 4GB. Star Wars The Old Republic is 15GB. World of Warcraft is 23GB. Skyrim is 6GB. Should I go on? As for the power, the Vita has plenty of power to render a 3D scene at it's native resolution. MMO's generally have very little physics, so are also not very processor heavy.

Azazel29

Both pc's and consoles r good for gaming just usually at different genres. I myself love games like civ and total war on my comp but I like my consoles just as much. There's little to no reason they shouldn't do this. It will make the company more money without hurting the game quality at all. And more people will get to find out how fun this game is gonna be ( or not fun for a select few I imagine). Great idea by the company the servers will be fuller and more lively and their pockets a little thicker. I just can't see the negative some of u r venting toward this announcement

zaxafreon
zaxafreon

@Raeldor You do realise how big this game is right? As powerful as the vita is, theres no way you can put an mmo the size of GW let alone GW2.

@majin_lebeau Anyone with a 5th grade reading level can tell if their PC can handle a game. Driver updates are pretty easy to begin with (go to website, click download driver, click open...tada!) and thats if you have a custom built machine. Many prebuilt machines simply have an updater program that you run from the desktop and do all the work for you. Also, putting in a DVD and clicking install and next a couple times is another task a 5th grader to do. TLDR: Your point about PC gaming is moot unless you are in elementary school.

@RavenXavier The Xbox 360 has had working keyboard/mouse function for a long time. Works with almost any USB devices. So you can hook up a ghetto keyboard/mouse combo from wal-mart just fine if you want. I'd rather just play it on PC myself, but people hating on consoles are just hating. There's no reason NOT to release it on console.

majin_lebeau
majin_lebeau

@ghosthero333, good argument, I would like to see someone try and disprove that. Add in the fact that when you buy a game for your console you can play immediately. Nothing like installing the game, checking specs, updating drivers every few years. Oh and I hope your computer can run it after you did all that.

Albaficas

"GhostHero333 And also I believe console games play better" play an RTS (if consoles has any) or an mmo...and when im sayin MMO i mean a REAL MMO not that crap called DCU with 4 buttons. Then we talk again

GhostHero333

Hopefully this "small developing team" can make a big game great on the console. Because say what you will console games sell better than PC games. And also I believe console games play better, and yes graphics are better on PC than console but gameplay makes up for that.

Azazel29
Azazel29

And it would not be watered down for consoles. The UI would be changed. And the graphics would be set for consoles and people with pc's can adjust theirs. That's about. Yep. That's it

Azazel29
Azazel29

Most of the pc users seem to be against this and I don't know why. Cause u want to feel special? Sure there are more kids on consoles but still some on the pc as well. I for one would love to see this on consoles. I enjoy my controller and big tv screen. I also keep a keyboard plugged up all the time. The only catch is having to hit an xtra button for skills in pvp (right trigger etc.) but I don't think it will make that much of a difference. And I hope they don't separate the pc players from the console players because more people make it more fun. U pc players just have to trust that their are some mature console players and to be honest u won't even know we r on a console.

MMO's on Consoles = Epic Fail. Until consoles comes with keyboards this won't work. At least not in a way I'd like to play.

let's see if they can make it work, mapping keyboard controls in a controller is a challenge besides not many mmo on console, FF XI is still good

@sinex1983 You quit playing a PC game to avoid the console players? lolwut?

Snaptrap
Snaptrap

@Albaficas Tera is not doing well because it's a MAJOR grindfest. All you do is kill hordes upon hordes of mobs. There's virtually no character story. Bluehole figured that they could just take a typical grind MMO, mix it with action combat, sleazy characters, and then make it subscription based. Just like Aion and it's flying gimmick. That's all those MMO's are about. Completely impractical features.

sune_Gem
sune_Gem

I would only find this acceptable if you could have PvPvP (Platform vs Platform vs Platform) in a similair style to the WvWvW (World vs World vs World) scenario they currently have. That would be a true system war!

I think GW2 would work on consoles very well, to be honest. At least compared to other MMOs.

sinex1983
sinex1983

I'm fine with this as long as I'm not forced to play alongside all of the console smacktards. The last thing I want is a bunch of 11-year-olds and bored housewives polluting my gamign experience -- I quit WoW to be rid of the idiotic console-type dirt bags and I'd rather they not follow me to my new chosen MMO.

Cwagmire21
Cwagmire21

I don't know much about Sony's PSN, but I see this not working very well on XBL. For one, it's hard to play an MMO on a controller. MMOs are very chat oriented and the idea of a General chat being nothing but voice chat or everything slowly pecking away on the awful chat system that XBL uses with a controller just wouldn't work. Not to mention the fact that MS is very slow in getting patches out through their processes and those crucial patches needed in the early weeks of any MMO would make the console launch that much worse. In the end though, it'll be interesting if they are trying to make the PC version work on consoles or if they have already curtailed the PC version for consoles in which my hype for GW2 may be deflated if true.

throw keyboard and mouse support for ps3 and we'll be good to go

I think the only console MMO I could play with no issues and actually enjoy my time with was Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast. MMO's that are built strictly for the PC never make the proper transition to a console because they weren't built for said console. I do hope Guild Wars 2 does good though. I will always be a WoW player. and I only say that because I've already invested too much time and money into it and I simply cannot put my attention on another MMO. (I also haven't touched my WoW account in atleast 8 months. Had to prepare for the barrage of awesome console/PC games that came out)

godzillavskong

Guild Wars? I don't know or have many friends that play that , matter of fact I don't have any that do. I'm sure a lot of gamers like it. I'm just not too excited about it coming to consoles. Leave this one on the PC, not to mention the fact that PC's always seem to give you more free stuff.

vishisluv7
vishisluv7

I'd rather they hold off on that until the next gen consoles are out. I always get a bad feeling when MMO devs talk about console versions. OTOH, This studio has done right by me in the past, so long as they don't have to make it to simple for consoles. That is, don't infringe on PC gamers quality to "make it fit" on a console, that's all.

vault-boy
vault-boy

Not to sound like Debby Downer but I am a little bit skeptical about all this. An MMO on a console just doesn't seem like a good idea, especially if it is a port of a PC version and if its just a small team that I don't think its going to have many drastic changes. I don't expect it to be very good on consoles (that is if it is released). Not to mention an MMO is meant to be a long term game and with the new generation of consoles starting up this year I don't know about how long this game could actually last (or at least have a large following). Then again, it could surprise me. They might even be making the game for the Wii U (with a tablet controller that might actually work when you think about it) or even wait for the next Xbox and Playstation. Either way, I really do hope its good, even if I don't play it because I know a lot of people have high hopes for the game and even if I don't play it I still want them to be able to have fun with the game. Good luck to the devs.

@Philly1UPer : Again, you have no idea what the conversation was even about. I am no PC elitist, far from it, in fact the reason it was brought up is because some conceited person said that "Console gamers are just retards". The reason I mentioned building PC's is because not everyone wants to spend the money when they can buy a console and be done with it never having to worry about upgrading. Next time you join a conversation, know what you are talking about and read the previous comments. Please.

I just hope they eventually make an MMO that is built specifically for the console interface. Do we really need 100+ little icons and doodads all over the screen to click on in order to tell a story and have some multiplayer fun with friends?

halo2_4_pc
halo2_4_pc

I could definitely see this working well on PS3 since it has KB/M support. 360 would be much harder without keyboard and mouse support. An MMO without a keyboard would be extremely hard to do. Maybe the 360 chatpad could be included?

RAGEofSTUNTS
RAGEofSTUNTS

Hopefully this doesn't split the population too much. If players on pc, 360, and ps3 could all play on the same servers that would be great.
