Guild Wars 2 beta attracts 1 million applicants

ArenaNet reveals 1 million gamers have applied to beta test the upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

ArenaNet has received 1 million Guild Wars 2 beta applications, the company revealed on Twitter this afternoon. The beta sign-up period was open for 48 hours only, from 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday, February 22 to today at 1 p.m. ET.

One million beta applications were received, but how many will get in?

Those chosen to participate in the beta will be notified by email, at which time they will need to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before being permitted to play the massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

The Guild Wars 2 beta will begin in March, with the full game expected to be released during 2012. The team at ArenaNet has a small group working on a console version of the game, but no announcements have been made concerning Guild Wars 2 arriving outside of the PC.

Guild Wars 2 puts players into a persistent fantasy world that is driven by a range of dynamic events. When Guild Wars 2 is launched later this year, it will cost a fee up front but will not require a monthly paid subscription to continue playing.

Posted by the ArenaNet team on Facebook: "The next Guild Wars 2 Beta Event will take place in late March. Invitations have not yet been sent out, but all those who will be invited will be notified in advance. Give your F5 keys a break and enjoy all of the new information from the past week."

Guys, ArenaNet will keep everyone updated via Twitter & Facebook. They haven't sent out beta invites yet, when they begin the invites process they will let you know, if you sign up to receive updates from them of course. Anyone who's received an invite already... has been duped. Be careful :)

It will be nice to play an MMORPG whenever I feel like it instead of rushing to finish everything within my 1 month sub. window.

@Dariuskhan No account details but if the signing up email is the same as your Guild Wars email, they could potentially choose existing customers. Also I am hoping there are similarities between the original and the sequel such as the skill system and PvP because these were Guild Wars' strongest points.

Just to point out on my previous post, that doesn't mean there will be nothing except lore for original Guild Wars players, knowing ArenaNet they will have plenty of little surprises for old players that will only make sense to those people. Easter Eggs, references to NPCs or events, etc, are bound to be plenty. I've been looking forward to this sequel since they announced Eye of the North personally.

@danyjr Since beta registration did not require you to enter your Guild Wars account details, it would be safe to say that ArenaNet will be giving everyone who entered the same chances, whether they have played Guild Wars or not. Based on what we know so far about the game, the only thing that resembles Guild Wars at this point is the lore, everything else is a fresh take on the genre, or an upgrade to existing mechanics. Essentially, whether you have played Guild Wars or not, it appears as though it won't have a huge bearing on Guild wars 2.

I hope they give priority to existing Guild Wars players.

That's because it looks too good to be true, and I intend to find out ASAP that it won't take over my life.

Well, it didn't cost us anything to enter. I pay now and then for a lotto ticket even though odds are astronomical to win. It's fun to dream though! I'm happy that ArenaNet look like they will be rewarded for doing something different than WoW/TOR clones in the genre.

Watching the video - I'm reminded of Rift. Which I enjoyed. Although this seems more cartoony. I'm not a fan of the dodge button in an RPG. Still, I'm looking forward to GW2 and pinning hopes on The Secret World.

Just so you guys know, ArenaNet will be having more than one beta test before official release, so for those of you who have entered, do not dismay if you do not receive an invite to the first one, there will still be chances you'll be selected for another one. That could actually work in your favour too, come to think of it. ie: you don't get into the first beta, so you continue to wait and keep updated as much as possible, same happens for the next, and the next, and before you know it, the official release day will be upon you, and since you were so busy keeping an eye on whether you were going to get a beta invite, you didn't even notice how long you'd been waiting.

@albaficas Sensitive WoW gamer or SW:TOR one. Are you crying that finally wow will have some serious competition after 7 years or are you crying because SW:TOR starting to decline already? Anyways, you dont like it. Go away. But i bet in the end of the day youll play GW2 , soon or later.

Wow I'm guessing they knew if they held it open for anytime longer practically no one who signed up would get a code. Anyone any idea how many beta keys will be distributed?

Me two days ago: Wow beta signups are only open for two days! That will increase my chances of getting in! Me today: *Reads beta has received over a million signups* Okay.jpg

I wish he wouldn't have kept comparing the graphics and all to Warhammer. Perhaps it would be best to say that Guild Wars came out long before Warhammer Online did and they have clearly carried over the same graphics from the first but made it more artsy, of course improving it. The artsy look is way better than Warhammer. I would love to have been in this beta but missed the sign up by 20 minutes, arghhhhh!

Good luck all. I hope they mean a digital signature / agreement, like usual. I remember Mortal Online (I think it was) had me print out and sign / return an NDA. What a PITA, ha.

Dariuskhan
Dariuskhan

@supergp17: lol, if indeed you did get an actual invite, you would have agreed to the Non-Disclosure Agreement... which... you'd have breached by stating you were invited... go figure. Quoted from FAQ on the official Guild Wars 2 site just for clarification: By signing the NDA you are entering into a legally binding contract with ArenaNet. Any "leaking" of information, images, or your participation in a Beta Event will result in serious ramification, up to and including being barred from participating in future Beta Events with ArenaNet, account termination, and legal proceedings.
