Grand Theft Auto V has overtaken the lifetime sales of Grand Theft Auto IV in the UK after three weeks on sale, sales tracking company Chart-Track has reported.
Rockstar's latest open-world title sold 1.57 million units in the UK after its first day on sale, overtaking previous record holder Call of Duty: Black Ops' 1.41 million to become the fastest-selling game in UK history.
Chart-Track adds that Grand Theft Auto V is now the UK's 12th best-selling game of all time, and has raked in the fifth largest revenue in gaming records. Grand Theft Auto V has now almost equaled the money made by Call of Duty: Black Ops, the company adds.
This week also saw the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online, with the latest patch for the game--which has been suffering connectivity problems since launch--going live over the weekend.
The massive sales milestone was not enough for Grand Theft Auto V to reclaim the top spot in the UK charts this week from football sim FIFA 14, however. Sales of the annual football franchise have dropped 68 percent in its second week, which is a better result than the 72 percent drop for FIFA 13 this time last year.
Codemasters' F1 2013 entered the charts in third, followed by The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. Just Dance 4 launched in ninth place, with NBA 2K14 landing in seventh.

To rockstar..
Honestly, I do not think online and cloud gaming is in your DNA. I have serious doubts you can fix the problems plaguing GTAV online.
The character creation produces the same awful looking avatar no matter what you do to the grandparents. ANY of the people waling around in the offline mode on any street corner are a vast improvement on it.
And because I dont care about the avatar I am allowed to create, I have no emotional investment in online. The online game, like the avatar, is 'disposable'.
That said, you really need to focus on DLC, deliver as much content as you can for single player. That is your comfort zone.
Love it but I am not liking the story to much. I'm on the 38th main mission. Where are all the heists?? So far only done 2. For a game supposed to be about them they are sourly missing so far. I'm really hoping that changes soon. I also find the main story line confusing. But that is probably just because of the constant player changes and side missions I do. Beyond that though game is amazing and I love the realistic things added in like having to walk or take your golf cart from shot to shot lol.
3 weeks compared to 5+ years and it already outsells. That is pretty damn amazing. Wonder what the worldwide numbers are.
GTA V is amazing. For sure, one of the best games of this year, and of the generation. And....that's it.
the top ten best selling games of all time all on Nintendo consoles with 9 of them being Nintendo games with Wii sports clocked at 80.1 mil ..... boss
I liked GTAIV, but not as much as GTAV, and San Andreas... those were awesome games. I would love an hd version of San Andreas, or a remake, with all the perks from GTAV... would be siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick! I know it will never happen though...
Not a surprise, considering how disappointing GTA IV was. Sorry, folks, but GTA IV was a low point for the series.
What surprises me is that it's ONLY the twelfth best selling game of all time. Seriously???
I dont know about you guys but the graphic doesnt look as good as the screenshot ..maybe its just me xD
How about a Packie DLC? Only fav character I liked as well as Niko Bellic.
I had a tough time finishing GTA IV, it was just so unappealing to me. The characters had no life to them, the story was just bland, and the graphics were just too muddy looking. I had more fun with the DLC than I did with the actual main game. But GTA V sucked me in the moment I was emptying the vault in the prologue. GTA V in my opinion is probably the best GTA game to date, followed very closely by Vice City. They took everything they learned from the games they released this gen, and made a fantastic immersive open world with some of the best characters
Vinewood zombies DLC plz!
Amazing how much other countries love American products but are so quickly to say how terrible America is....especially the ones who have never been here.
@6orange6 I agree it needs some dlc. it needs to follow on from where the game leaves off. you can carry on playing after but once i complete the story mode. i am no longer motivated to carry on just going round doing the odd side missions that i might have missed, or working towards getting 100%. i would have preferred a game plus mode. where you start the game again, and get to keep the cash and any weapons etc, that you got first time round. but with increased difficulty. i would then work towards getting 100%
I agree. I'm loving this game but it really needs more heists. They're the best part, though the story itself is actually much better than I thought it would be.
Cheers guys. I'm with ya now. I don't know why, but I was half thinking this applied to a similar time frame since the game's release.
@PlatinumPaladin It hasn't been out that long. Nintendo has a bunch of exclusives that have sold over 20 mill. I think the original Super Mario Bros alone has sold over 40 mill all time.
@PlatinumPaladin But that's in only 3 WEEKS. In another 3 MONTHS it may be #1. At this rate, I wouldn't rule it out.
@Toadamus They never do.
@DESTROYRS_F8 Packie is already in GTA V. You can use him on heists. The only bad thing is he pops up as a random encounter....and I accidentally killed him.
@DESTROYRS_F8
I thought you were being racist there when I first saw your comment. lol.
I would prefer seeing DLC with C.J. in it... We have been to his home in GTA V, but it wasn't him that answered the door.
@Mrod1212 I think it's gonna be aliens DLC just saying
@Psycold Amazing how Americans wont miss a chance to feel special, even if the game isnt murica at all lol
@Psycold Rockstar is a British / Scotish company.
Also the entire game is a parody of America and how ridiculous a lot of it is.
@Psycold Actually the GTA games were made in Scotland. They do have offices all over North America though (New York, San Diego, Vancouver, Toronto).
I wouldn't call it an American product.
@Psycold
"love American products"
Made in China
@Psycold I was at a concert, UK post-punk band in the US, and the lead singer said "you ever notice how American musicians don't write songs about England, but British musicians write endlessly about America?"
Then they played a song about the US housing bubble collapse.
@Psycold
Rockstar is basically British if you look at the history of the company dude. That's why GTA seems make fun of america as much as pay respect to it.
It's a subtle testament to the best and worst your country has to offer.
@Divisionbell should we make a Petetion to Rockstars to make a DLC for more Heists?? What'd you guys say 'bout that? :)
@LonelyHippie27 @DESTROYRS_F8 That's a shame because he is awesome in the bank heist especially.
@punksterdaddy @DESTROYRS_F8 who answers the door?
@Ibra8 @Mrod1212Yeah!! I want to kill and decapitate aliens, zombies are getting me bored.
@Ibra8
I think you may be correct bud. Judging by what has been in the main story.
I seem to be the only one that DOESN'T want another Zombie game.
The aliens would be far more interesting... IMO
@Duke_51 No.
"Rockstar North president says scale of open-world game required internal studios from around the world to work together to produce open-world game. "

@shingui5 Our Customer support is in the Philippines.
@plaintomato @Psycold
The White Stripes did... but I know what you mean.
@Leejjohno @Psycold The UK has a lot more history to critique, respect, and just flat out make fun of than the US.
It's a lot safer to critique the US and if it's hilarious like GTA V I don't have a problem, really. If they made fun of India or Mexico we'd have social justice Gamespot warriors picking them apart for racism or "going too far".
I would be all for that! The game could always use more heists :)
@pip3dream
No idea mate.
It isn't CJ or any of the characters from San Andreas.
Actually the neighbourhood is full of Ballas for some reason.
@punksterdaddy you don't have to answer that!!!
@metalblinga @PorroLoco @Ibra8 @Mrod1212
The Ultimate Horror! lol.
@PorroLoco @Ibra8 @Mrod1212 how about the cast of twilight
@PorroLoco @Ibra8 @Mrod1212 Screw that, The aliens look soo cheap in the single player. I've been wanting zombies in an urban GTA setting since IV.
@punksterdaddy Yup, its interesting how people assume GTA is an American product - because of the american settings. Which isn't all that surprising. I was playing this game with a british friend over the weekend and he was really surprised to hear that this was a British game!
@mikemaj82
Well the UK has a population of 62 million.
The USA has a population of 314 million.
So basically... D'uh! ;)
@punksterdaddy Probably because it sells millions upon millions more copies in the states than anywhere else.
@mikemaj82 @Duke_51
It is developed by Rockstar North in Scotland and yes Rockstar has offices all over the world.
- Grand Theft Auto - Rockstar North
- Red Dead - Rockstar San Diego.
I know that Leslie Benzies' said that it used developers from all over R* offices and why wouldn't they.That doesn't change the fact that the game is developed and comes from the UK.
The movies World War Z and the The Dark Knight Rises were both made in Scotland too but we do not claim them as British films, because it was an American studio that paid for and produced them.
We don't get much, so the least you can do is give us what is actually created here as ours, despite R* using their other studios. lol.
After all we don't claim RDR as a British game.
Why is it so important for American's to claim this game. I've seen this argument loads of times since the game was launched.
@punksterdaddy @plaintomato @Psycold God save the Queen!
@PlatinumPaladin @dogbert784 @Leejjohno @Psycold
Really? I always found the history of Britain interesting. I can't think of a country with a more interesting history...
On a more relevant note I think it's just as easy to laugh at British culture. Only place on the planet where you can have ice cream gang wars.
@dogbert784 @Leejjohno @Psycold I dunno. The UK's a small country with less people (obviously). There's not a whole lot that goes on around here worth taking the piss out of. If you wanna laugh at us just watch England play football, BBC parliament or The Jeremy Kyle show. That about covers everything. Probably the biggest stereotype about us that I'm aware of is that we're boring, and it's kinda true. Even our history is thirty shades of brown. Although there is that heart warming tale of the ginger king who struggled to find love. Bless 'im. :-P
@dogbert784 Yes..."Respect" ? Are you fucking kidding me?
@dogbert784 @Leejjohno @Psycold Yeah, like African Zombies - in Africa in RE5.
