GTAV generates $800 million in 24 hours

Global day-one retail sales outpace Grand Theft Auto IV by healthy margin, good for highest launch-day mark in history of Take-Two Interactive and Grand Theft Auto series.

by

Grand Theft Auto V generated over $800 million during its first 24 hours on sale across the world, parent publisher Take-Two Interactive announced today. The day-one sales figure is the highest in Take-Two's history and for the Grand Theft Auto series.

By comparison, Grand Theft Auto IV sold 3.6 million copies, generating $310 million during its launch day in April 2008. Take-Two has not disclosed how many GTAV copies have been sold thus far.

Last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops II generated $500 million in 24 hours.

GTAV also dethroned Call of Duty: Black Ops in the United Kingdom to become the region's fastest-selling game of all time, moving 1.57 million copies in 24 hours.

The game was released on September 17 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Its launch in Japan and Brazil is forthcoming.

"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation, and excellence," Take-Two CEO and chairman Strauss Zelnick said in a statement.

GTAV's multiplayer component--Grand Theft Auto Online--will be released as a free update on October 1. For more on GTAV, check out GameSpot's review.

I love how before this figure came out they were estimating something like 250 million to create and MARKET the game.

Marketing alone, during sports games, premiere nights.....can easily be 100 million.

someone prove me wrong?

This is a game you MUST have, of all video games. Saints Row could only dream of this success. Horrible games. They stole GTA's style up until recently. They finally raised enough money to come up with something half decent. . . and original. GTA IS THE KING OF OPEN WORLD.

And only days ago they were hoping for a billion in a MONTH.

So.... is this a new record for video games or not?

As much as I like GTA, I don't think it sold that much on the 1st day. Maybe if you add in preorders, but those can't count as "day one" sale, can they?

Wow, 800 million dollars! That's way more than Black Ops 2 did in 24 hours. It'll be very interesting to see how many other records (first week/month etc.) that GTA V will smash. GTA V might also claim those records for some time, since Activision doesn't think their latest CoD: Ghosts will sell as much as previous CoD's, now that we're entering next-gen and people will be more hesitant about which version to buy. I'm no fan of either franchise, but I'd much rather see GTA smash sales records than CoD.

Till they wont say something about PC version, simple yes it will be or it wont be. RG is dead game studio for me and I was huge fan of their products but this no information phase disappointed me a lot. PC gamers dont deserve this. Thanks to MODS games like GTA IV are still awesome after 5 years... and they showed back to PC community by not releasing it at the same date or e.g. within 2 months...

with that kind of loot , I sure don't want to hear about "loses" ! as a matter of fact R* should have enough to hire a  few more and kick out some other exciting titles and with a quicker rate ! ....by the way I really am enjoying GTA V !

GTAV's multiplayer component will be released as a free update on October 1...at last someone who didn't rush to jump the bandwagon of must have mp components first.  I just wished it would apply to more games...

Hellll yes. I love it when games like this sell well. They put the time and effort into it, and it shows. They deserve it.

This can only mean more games from Rockstar. If games like this is what we get after a long wait, then I can only say it is well worth it.

I wonder if there was a PC release... the number would probably go down to $500 000 000

Seriously doubt that.  I was just at a Kmart down the street and they had about 40 copies.  A friend of mine bought a copy at Toys R Us yesterday, said it looked like he was the only person to buy one.

I Shouldn't bother, but alas. These figures are rather disorientating, Am I to rejoice or revolt? Are these figures indicative of the choices and trends of the general consumers thus a consensus of the majority of the video gamers? Are most gamers as we understand from these figures nothing but mindless, desensitised, insensitive, repetitive, hate-inciting, violent, rapeful, sadist, stereotypical, anarchistic, misogynistic, self-gratified, self-important ingrates?

How disturbing, if J game developers and others took  after these types of games seeking great sales as such, then truly, it shall be a day, lamentable. Oh, how I dread those moments past, when senseless shooting games were all the "hype" and western games had but one face. However, not all is lost, they will see these rather shallow games for what they are and grow tireful of them as they did with the other nonsensical games of the past.

How many times can you "beat up" the same NPCs, visit the same "Prostitute" NPCs and run around like a headless-chicken endlessy in this pathetic crime simulator, as you unwind from the stresses of work, or acting like a want-to-be criminal? A fad, and a lot of moonshine.

On a closing note, never fear repulsion and reprehension for voicing your views, for a surety,  it is your right. To those of you who are "Bots" and take the like religiously or fanatically, I mean you no offence; I may never forgive myself should you decide to administrate upon yourselves something of fatal proportions.

@boarwar not even close. Commercials aren't that expensive. The last super bowl (easily one of the biggest television events of the year) only cost around 3-4 million per ad

@cashx002 I agree GTA V is a must have and Saints Row 4 sucks but GTA is the king of sandbox games. Elder Scrolls is the king of open world.

ZackRoyer

@BattleOverlord Wait a little, they will wait for PS3/Xbox 360 sell rate to lower and then they will announce the ps4 and Xbone versions. When those sell rates drop, THEN they will announce for PC, do you think they don't want to sell to people 3 times the same game?

19James89
19James89

@JulyAeon In fairness they probably put it as a free update due to the amount of discs the Xbox 360 edition of the game would require.

@mr_nee it is sad that it is needed to not even say there will be a pc version just so people buy console version which is harder to pirate but it works better than DRM and they will sell more copies a few months later when they do release the pc version.

@mr_nee I guess you're not aware that GTA V has been pirated heavily over the past week, right? Stop being an ignorant turd.

@zombieweekend based on preorders R* probably had a lot of discs pressed, hence why it didn't sell out

@matrixman2k  You do know that some teenagers saved an elderly man from a fire; when they were returning home after their purchased this game. If you are implying that this "mindless game" desensitizes people from actual doing the right thing. That news article will make your whole comment invalid.

@matrixman2k Playing a game makes you hate-inciting, sadistic, and a rapist? Come on, man. Playing a game, reading a book, or watching a movie (in it of itself) doesn't make people violent. There is no proof of your opinion. GTA is shallow? Haven you even played it? This "fad" will have made a billion in a week. It's not going away anytime soon, whether you want it to or not.

00J
00J

@matrixman2k So in other words, your viewing this "game" as something other than a game?

I work for a living, and i don't go to sleep dreaming about gta, i don't drive around thinking about gta.

I just enjoy seeing what can be done with games at this point in time.

Having gone through the Atari generation of 4 bit games, all the way through 8bit, 16 bit, 32bit, arcades when they existed up to now, it's really amazing to see just what can be done on a $300 machine that you hook up to your t.v.

When i compare my memories of C-64 computer gaming with what I see today, it's really rather astounding.

You are making this out to be much more than the sum of it's parts.

Basically a satire of real life played through animated characters.

The day these characters are indistinguishable from real life that's when we might need to analyze this...

For now it's only a game nothing more, an exaggerated  characterization.

@matrixman2k  So you're using the old unproven argument that violent video games influence the behavior of the players.  Why are you so angry at this game? If you don't buy it, I can guarantee it will not effect your life one bit. Why so concerned with what others are doing?

Cranler

@matrixman2k

Most gamers as we understand from these figures like games that aren't half assed. All games are half assed compared to GTA V.

Been playing GTA and other violent games since the late 90's but it hasn't desensitized me. When I see footage of real violence I find it disturbing.

@holtrocks @bourne2live I know right!? The headline should read: "GTA doubles all time record in 24 hr period".

instead of casually mentioning, that it sorta, kinda, sold 300+ million dollars more the first 24 hours. Activision probably payed the AP and other sources to toot their own horn....

IAMTYLERDURDEN
IAMTYLERDURDEN

@Primeyuri @mr_nee What makes you think it's "harder" to pirate? Maybe it was a few years ago but now, it's just as easy to pirate console games as it is pc games.

@zeta @mr_nee not as much as it would if it would release pc version at the same time.

@roosteraxe1 Indeed, I do think that the forementioned statement is permeated with eloquent sentences, worded in a manner that seems old-fashioned and far from the usual writings of this here establishment. Nevertheless, it's drenched with ignorance that is more ancient than the archaic phrasing with which it uses to purvey its allegations.

IAMTYLERDURDEN

@Maximus1224 @matrixman2k The fact is almost all video games feature killing in some form or another. Why single out GTA? How about all of those "war simulators" out there?
