GTAIII turns 10, coming to mobile devices

The anniversary edition of Grand Theft Auto III arrives for phones and tablets this autumn, along with a Claude action figure.

Grand Theft Auto maker Rockstar has announced a mobile version of its influential, 10-year-old sandbox adventure game Grand Theft Auto III. The 10th anniversary edition handheld version will hit "select" Apple and Android devices this autumn; these include the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S2, and Asus Iconia tablet.

The commemorative Claude doll.

The full list of compatible gadgets (see below) suggests a mobile game with relatively high hardware demands. Apple iOS devices older than the iPad 2 and the new iPhone (that is, with the Apple A5 chip) will not play it.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Liberty City-set GTAIII, which launched for the PlayStation 2 in 2001, Rockstar is also peddling a $150 limited-edition Claude action figure: a 1:6 scale articulated dress-up replica of the game's protagonist, complete with Liberty City prison jumpsuit and classic ensemble (cargo pants and bomber jacket with "working zippers"). His tiny plastic arsenal comprises a baseball bat, grenades, knife, pistol, sniper rifle, and assault rifle.

GTAIII joins Max Payne as the second 10-year-old Rockstar game heading to mobile platforms in the coming weeks. In September, Rockstar announced a new version of the 2001 action shooter Max Payne with "full HD" and "customizable controls" for unspecified mobile devices.

Grand Theft Auto III-supported mobile devices:

Apple iOS devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S

Android phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Samsung Galaxy S2, Motorola Atrix

Android tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

"these include the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S2, and Asus Iconia tablet." Iconia is not from Asus, it's Acer's!! In the bottom of the supported Android tablets, GS listed it right, but not in the news.

$150 for a freaking doll, no thanks. I can buy 10 awesome used DS or PSP games with that money which would be ten times better than any GTA mobile phone games anyways.

They'd rather make the game playable on Windows 7.

@brain20035 Where did you see anything about Vice City in this?

Working zippers on the bomber jacket? Count me in, lol. I'm playing a lot of games at the moment that are actually 10 years old or more, Deus Ex, Diablo 2, Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption, and while 10 years is a long time they are still fun to play.

Uh, spiffy? Well, maybe. I can't exactly play this just yet though since my phone isn't super powered and brand new. whatever, I'll get a new one some time this next year.

The figure looks really cool but I can't justify spending 150 bucks on an adult action figure. I'd consider it if I could afford it.

I support the idea of HD remixes for the trilogy on the consoles. Playing Vice City with shiny graphics and that soundtrack in true 5.1 sounds cool.

I don't need a game I already completed to be re-done on an inferior gaming device. Make it HD for the PS3 and I'd really consider buying it again.

What about iPhone 3gs ?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the PSP have a 333 MHz CPU? which ran GTA 3: Liberty City Stories fine yet, based on the above devices needs 1 Ghz dual CPU now a couple of years later? I understand it's not optimised but I don't think it's impossible to get it running fine of mid-caliber smart phones (iPhone 4, Windows Phone..etc..). Only issue I can think of are the touch controls, anyone who played Chinatown wars on an iPhone or iPod knows it was an issue, it'd be made worse in third person. Sony Xperia Play??!! *hint, hint* What about an HD-remake for the consoles with online support (alongside perhaps Vice City and in particular San Andreas). What about a 3DS and a Vita version too?

I've never been happier about my Samsung Galaxy S2!!

@risako9 I guess the validation for your point is that the original PSP had a CPU clocking a 333MHz and something like 16MB of RAM. The GTA games on there felt about equivalent to GTAIII in terms of content, graphics, and gameplay. So it may be possible that the Xperia Play could handle this. I think the limitation might be in the operating system running the device. the PSP OS dedicates all of the resources to the game you're playing. The Xperia Play has to reserve parts of the system to keep the OS running in the background. I'm just guessing, but that may be the issue. There has to be a reason the Playstation Suite for Android is currently only supporting PS1 games.

@PitchBlack999 So you would illegally download the game just because the collectible figure costs $150? You aren't forced to buy the figure..

@deathstream, potentially. However do you see how many thumbs down your reaction got? Aparantly Android has many users who don't like your attitude. They make up the majority of the smartphone market and as long as they do there will always be an Android version of anything remotely popular. And if there is an Android version and they refuse to bring it to all models than there is always someone who will. I am nor saying I am encouraging piracy. The fact is that Iphones can easily play illegal games aswell. I'm just saying that if you happen to have a great Android device and for some reason Rockstar ignores you than you are not out of luck. This is why I say: Opensource FTW. And no, this does not mean I am hating on Apple, I am just praising Android. Something else entirely.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play didn't make the list?. Given that it has Playstation controls and is "Playstation certified" Since GTA3 was originally released for Playstation 2. You would think Sony Ericsson Xperia Play would have this game. Neither of the new Sony computer tablets "S1" and "S2" have this either. Hmm

Is the EVO2 the EVO 3d, or the unannounced EVO 4G+? That's really interesting.

Seems interesting but for a game that demanding, it better have some damn good features to justify specs needed or else I'll just stick to my ps2 and pc copies.

My Beautiful Wife & I, collect PC/xBox/Ps3 Collector Edition Games. Each one costs $100+ AUD, I also collect DieCast Gaming Figures, some costing $480+ AUD (Especially the Tron Legacy DieCast)... Just as you say, I have a well paid JOB and a beautiful Wife into collecting the same stuff,, so it work's out for the both of us. Please do not flame the expense of something, if it is not within your field of interest or price affordability, it would be best to keep that to yourself instead of "flaming" the cost or quality. Thank You.

Lets see Zelda 25th anniversary Four swords with added levels free Zelda Skyward Sword with Wii-mote+ and sound track for $70 Zelda Ocarina of Time with updated graphics and added levels for $40 GTA III anniversary The exact copy of GTA III on system you probably already own it for and probably cost $10 used for $150 but it comes with an action figure that will probably be worth few dollars in weeks. And so people dont go on about me being a nintendo fanboy Mario anniversary wasnt a good deal either.
