GTA: Chinatown Wars to rage on PSP this fall

Enhanced edition of Rockstar Leeds' top-rated gangster actioner coming to Sony's portable on UMD, via download for the PSP Go.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars received effusive critical praise when it debuted on the Nintendo DS in March. However, high marks from critics didn't translate to equally high sales, with the M-for-Mature-rated top-down shooter/minigame compilation selling just 90,000 units in the US during its opening month, according to the NPD Group. That figure is an extraordinarily low one, considering the DS's massive installed base and the strength of the franchise.

The PSP now belongs to the Triad.

A commonly floated theory for Chinatown Wars' lackluster start is that mature games simply don't sell well on Nintendo's platforms. That theory may soon be tested, as Rockstar Games today said that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available for Sony's PSP this fall. The game will see release via traditional retail discs, as well as a digital download through the PlayStation Network for Sony's newly unveiled UMD-less PSP Go, which will be available in the US on October 1.

As with the DS installment, Rockstar Leeds is leading development on the PSP edition of Chinatown Wars. Rockstar notes that the PSP game won't just be a port of its DS counterpart, with the publisher promising enhanced widescreen graphics, as well as improved lighting and animations. Chinatown Wars on the PSP also offers new story missions, though up-and-coming Triad gangster Huang Lee remains the portable title's protagonist.

Though Chinatown Wars was the first installment of Rockstar's acclaimed franchise to release on Nintendo's portable, the GTA series is no stranger to the PSP. In 2005, Rockstar released the well-received GTA: Liberty City Stories, which returned players to the New York-inspired scene seen in GTAIII. The following year, Rockstar brought GTA: Vice City Stories to the PSP, a well-regarded title that took place in the same humid Miami-mimicked streets of the original GTA: Vice City.

They should really keep the GPS and kill-the-cops-to-lower-your-wanted-level features, as they worked great on the DS.

Lol money hungry rockstar is a very VERY VERY money hungry company that: -They made the pc port of gta iv very cheaply. -They take 50 million from microsoft to make the dlc exclusives. -They have average sales so they port it to psp. well u can try, but the all the psp versions including 3000 are already pirated so you might as well give up hope and take this game as a loss, and a lot of people ARE NOT LOOKING forward to buy a psp go.

I personally think the PSP version of GTA: CTW won't be as good as the DS version. The main reason is that the PSP won't be very good with the top-down perpective and if they make it like the stories, it would ruin the game (also, the touch-screen minigames are fun). I think Rockstar should give PSP owners what they want, San Andreas stories (or if you can't do that: Los Santos stories, San Fierro stories and Las Venturas stories and make the cities bigger).

Yeah im getting sick of liberty city and london not that good why cant they just come up with a whole new city name and map and everything and come up with better gangs the triads ar in every single gta game just about except vice city and i dont know bou gta 1 n 2 but they should get rid of the triad and come up with a whole new city and make new gangs in the games or if they cant do that they should just go back to san andreas because that is the best and easily the most popular gta game and rockstar would get good sales if they brought out a new san andreas game.

.strangely enough, the PSP version already got a review? But it's written as the DS version's review?

@maxsteel86 "You're telling me Nintendo fans have never played another non nintendo console?" I never said that, but you can't assume that either. Also, GTA isn't a "hardcore" title coz it's played by casuals and gangsta wannabe's, coz they can't do the stuff in real life (ex: YOU!) if you're a hardcore gamer that plays GTA's.. Why play a game that involves stealing cars, and beating up people, and can't even DARE to do it for real? Another thing is that you're wrong, the DS has more "hardcore" titles compared to the PSP. Also, I don't smoke, you do though... ...nothing personal, BUT YOU STARTED IT!

@ Geomyr that would mean rebuilding the whole game on a different graphics engine. ain't going to happen.

I will probably pick this up but I hope the next GTA uses a different location I'm getting sick of Liberty City. Heres an idea: GTA London remake?

thankfully its on the psp to be honest i dont like the graphics on the ds version more like the old school ps1 version of gta. hopefully they will enhance the graphics like san andreas and vice city.

jordanfan6. Wait until PSP2 or whatever because San Andreas has a very big map and I don't think the PSP right now can hold that much memory for it. And if they make a scaled down version of San Andreas, the game will pretty much suck. So wait until the PSP console has the capability, it will be worth the wait :P

the demographics of the DS count against GTA, not only that the DS is notoriously easy to Pirate. I'm willing to bet that most hardcore DS gamers know how to pirate & do so. there could easily be hundreds of thousands of chinatown copies out there just pirated that's all. It is one reason why the DSi was introduced- it is not piratable as far as I know.

Interesting, very interesting!! Still wont make me buy a PSP though!

I'm guessing the touch screen mechanics gonna change to something like God of War style "press the button as they appear" type... and probably they may improve on the radio... the radio in the DS version has been sorely missed...

Just goes to show what kind of people actually buy the DS - casual gamers. They aren't interested in actual games, they'd rather have collections of mini-games or perhaps a nice little game about dogs. Unsurprising news given the sales figures.

@BLuFAlc0n "-Since it's the first major GTA Game on a Nintendo Console, there won't be as many fans as predicted." You're telling me Nintendo fans have never played another non nintendo console? I'm pretty sure almost everyone in the core gaming demographic has played GTA. Which just shows one thing: the DS isn't all that much played by core gamers, more casual gamer stuff. Well we'll see how it does on the PSP. I'm not a sony fanboy but I dont deny that I dislike Nintendo with a passion for what they've done to the core gaming crowd so go PSP! Also "Chinatown Wars wasn't "hyped" enough, although it's a better GTA than GTA4." Someone tell me what this guy is smoking?

I think thats a fantastic idea. I love the mini games

BLuFAlc0n

Well let's see, it didn't sell well on the DS coz: - It's the 1st 18+ game for the console -Nintendo never have a good GTA Game until Chinatown Wars -Since it's the first major GTA Game on a Nintendo Console, there won't be as many fans as predicted. The PSP Version might be good, but it won't surpass the innovation on the DS Version, it's only because that Chinatown Wars is better than the rest of PSP's GTA's. ....also Rockstar NEEDS to learn that GTA is nothing but HYPE! Another reason why the DS version didn't sell well, coz REAL GAMERS should know that you don't give a game high rating because of it's name, GTA! Halo 3 is a big of a hype which made me hate it, but GTA is even a bigger hype than Halo. That's all Rockstar knows how to sell, by hype! Unfortunatelyu, Chinatown Wars wasn't "hyped" enough, although it's a better GTA than GTA4. Probably the next GTA will sell better on DS. @ angelGP32 ...agreed!

This sounds very interesting. I wonder what they'll do to replace the touch screen elements? I'll certainly be getting this, as the DS game was the best GTA I've played in a long time... I'd like to see how they can improve upon it without just the obvious polished graphics etc...

It's going to lose a lot without the touch screen but maybe now it's going to sell something.

This is sweet. I have yet to play GTA: Vice City Stories, but I continue to go back to LCS over and over. I'm ready for something fresh from GTA and Chinatown Wars looks like it could be the game to fill my needs. This reminds me that I need to find VCS for cheap somewhere and play it before this game releases in the fall. _

As long as they update the 1996-era graphics, I'll buy it. Rockstar Leeds did a great job with LC- and VC-Stories. Oh, and I'd definitely cream my jeans with excitement over the prospect of a SA-Stories. I'd assumes that it was too big to fit on a UMD, so I'm not going to hold my breath.

Ardiendo_1

Hmm this game was built specifically with the DS in mind, porting it is purely about the money. If it had sold better on the DS I don't think we'd be seeing this and with that in mind I don't think the PSP version will be as good but I could be wrong. I've not got it yet but will buy it eventually for DS (it is dirt cheap now anyway; £10 on play.com).

isephiroth47

I have both a DS and PSP, so I'm kinda cool on this, and I also think the PSP version will be better (in its own way . . . referring to the lack of touch screen mechanics, but I'm sure they'll think of something). Actually, the best thing I found in Chinatown wars is the drug-dealing, from which you can either get heaps of money or lose it all (see 4:44 of the above video). This is the only GTA game in which I did not need cheats to be rich.

I think it is cool that PSP is getting a version, but I would prefer to have a GTA game that takes full advantage of the PSP's power, and not just an enhanced port of a DS game.
