GTA: Chinatown Wars raging on iPad Sept. 9

Rockstar bringing portable overhead actioner to Apple's tablet with HD makeover next week for $10.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars certainly achieved substantial critical success upon its initial release for the DS in March 2009. However, Rockstar Games' overhead action adventure proved not to be a commercial juggernaut like its console cousins, with Nintendo calling sales of the game "frustrating." Since then, Rockstar has extended the game's reach to the PSP and iPhone, and now the publisher is adding one more platform to the mix, Apple's iPad.

The Triad's blood will flow in gripping HD next week.

In a post to its blog this week, Rockstar confirmed that an iPad-specific version of GTA: Chinatown Wars will arrive on Apple's App Store September 9. Like the iPhone version, Chinatown Wars for the iPad will carry a $9.99 price tag.

However, just because it's the same price doesn't mean Rockstar hasn't made some improvements to the iPad game. In addition to the tweaks made to the iPhone version, such as a multi-touch user interface and adjusted difficulty levels, the iPad version has been given an HD makeover, bringing with it crisper, high-definition graphics.

Chinatown Wars for Apple's platforms follows the pursuits of Huang Lee, an up-and-coming ruffian in Liberty City's Triad crime syndicate who seeks to uncover the truth behind the suspicious death of his father. As is suitable to the game's M-for-Mature rating, gamers can expect to engage in a variety of illicit activities, ranging from drug peddling to carjacking to armed mayhem.

Can't believe how long a DS game had been port this far. Might as well port it to PC, Wii, and PS2 too.

Great, Apple fans can now play the same game they already bought for their iPhones and that has been out on the DS and PSP now for well over a year. You just can't compete with this kind of overwhelming support.....

Fitting way to support the Apple Chinese Slave Box!

I know it's nitpicking, but why refer to it as 'HD' when the iPad's resolution is technically lower than the HD standard (720p).

this is good news.... for those with an iPad at least. I won't lie, I wouldn't mind having one, just not at the price they are when they don't have flash support. I'm quite happy with my Sony laptop for now, even if it is huge and heavy - it does everything and plays all the multi plat HD titles you find on consoles, with no lack of functionality at all. Best of all, my wired 360 pad connects into it too :) . If iPad could do that or similar with a peripheral to remove the need to always use touch screen, I really would consider it...

Oh well, it deserve the "frustrating" sales, cause GTA CW sucks! Short and predictable story, and nothing much to do in the open world... Over-all a boring game...

Finally, a worthwhile use for the ipad?

Why don't Rockstar port over Red Dead Redemption to the PC instead of wasting manpower on iPad apps.

Screw that, I'm never going to have an iPad. It's obvious at this point that a GTA won't sell as well when putting it on a different console (like the DS). It was definitely not a bad game, in fact it was very good, but they gotta think about the average age groups for certain consoles. Hell, now this game is on the DS, PSP, iTouch, and now the iPad... might as well just make a Wii, PS3, 360, and PC version now

Wow, Im so surprised. But the news that iPad will support Unreal 3 is a pretty big blow for nintendo and sony.

Might get it, might not, considering i already got the iphone version, and the ipad doesn't really have any new content, just better graphics. I'm excited to see the graphics of this game, seeing as it has the largest resolution out of all the ports.

Sux how that game got ported so much. It was a DS classic until they turned it into a rubberband.

The only reason Chinatown Wars is a commercial and critical success is because Rockstsr forced it. The game didn't work on the DS to they bring it over to everything else.....what's next, the Kitchen sink?

I've got the PSP and iPhone versions of Chinatown Wars. It's a really great game. If I had an iPad, I'd get that version too.
