Rockstar Games today updated Grand Theft Auto V's multiplayer component with a new mode and launched the game's latest weekly event.

The new GTA Online Adversary Mode is called Power Play. As you can see in the trailer, players pick up powerups scattered throughout the map to use to their benefit. These include the following (descriptions courtesy of Rockstar):

  • Beasted: Transform into the Beast and use special powers like invisibility, super jump, and super strength.
  • Zoned: Slow down time for all players, giving snipers a tactical advantage over exposed enemies.
  • Doped: Dull your enemy's senses with a trippy green haze. They'll never see that flank coming...
  • Raging: Unleash a rampage with your entire team by inflicting increased damage while taking reduced damage.
  • Flipped: Scramble your opponents by picking up Flipped, temporarily inverting all enemy camera controls and mixing team chat to truly get in their heads.
  • Dark: Take your team off the grid for well-timed sneak attacks.

Players can use one powerup at a time, and Rockstar says there will be a significant strategic component to how teams work together to make the most of what they have,

"Layers of strategy exist through stacking powerups with other teammates, or triggering powerups to counteract enemy team advantages," the developer said.

There are three Power Play maps in the game right now: Aircraft Carrier, Vespucci Beach, and Bolingbroke Prison. The mode is available from GTA Online's Jobs menu. To encourage you to check it out, Rockstar is offering double GTA$ and RP for one week, ending June 27.

Today's GTA Online update also adds the Grotti X80 Proto Supercar, which is available to buy from Legendary Motorsport. Here's what it looks like:

To celebrate Power Play's arrival, Rockstar is holding an event called "Power Play Week." Now through June 27, the developer is offering "steep discounts" on air and sea vehicles including the Lampadati Toro boat, and the Swift and Buckingham Valkyrie helicopters. Also, Ammu-Nation is offering 33 percent off the Homing Launcher weapon.

Additionally, everyone who logs into GTA Online this week gets a Grotti t-shirt for their character.

Similar to other recent GTA Online updates, this one is only for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game.
