Greg 'IdrA' Fields dropped from Evil Geniuses

Professional eSports organisation Evil Geniuses releases StarCraft II player IdrA; states it cannot support players who do not show due respect for the community.

Professional StarCraft II player Greg "IdrA" Fields has been dropped from gaming organisation Evil Geniuses. CEO Alexander Garfield announced the news in a post on the TeamLiquid forums yesterday.

IdrA signed with Evil Geniuses in 2010.

"The eSports industry, and companies like Evil Geniuses, would not be possible without the passion and support of our community. We, as a company, cannot and will not be supportive of anyone who does not show due respect and appreciation for the community that makes everything we do possible," the post stated.

IdrA signed with Evil Geniuses in September 2010 following the expiration of his previous contract with professional gaming organisation CJ Entus.

It is not the first time Evil Geniuses has taken action against its players. French StarCraft II player Ilyes "Stephano" Satouri was temporarily suspended without pay for inappropriate comments made during a live stream in October last year.

Evil Geniuses currently has contracts with teams and players across multiple games including StarCraft II, Dota 2, League of Legends, and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

I agree with RPGOmen that Idra is probably the only SCII player that has a real personality.  It was actually because of Idra that I even started playing Starcraft.  Idra is a very smart person, even if he displays some immaturity.  Still, he makes SCII interesting because he speaks his mind.

Why are some people surprised?  His cancer comment to Capoch probably played a big factor.  Nothing wrong with how Idra is, its pretty entertaining sometimes, but if you make the wrong touchy comments, it can be PR hell for the sponsor.

just a way of eg of letting ppl go cause they are not winning enough games

Idra is probably the only SCII player that had any real personality.  Not sure if it's suitable for any sport, but people love to hate the "bad boy" of something.  In fact, the only reason I even know of EG is because of Idra; to me he was pretty much the face of the team.  As sad as it is, I'll probably stop following EG in general because of this.  Sad because that pretty much affirms that bad manners are needed in a community that strives to make gaming a sport of "good manners" when it really isn't that at it's core.  It's about entertainment and bragging rights; people with attitudes and showing how "leet" they are.  This is why we see people saying "games are too easy" and then bragging if they accomplish feats or aiming to get that last achievement to display on their otherwise meaningless gamer score.  Truly, something had to happen other than him just being a player with bad manners, as they signed him on knowing full well of his prior reputation.  At the same time, I'm instantly disinterested from watching anymore Starcraft games if the community just wants to act almost as immature as Idra himself in seeking to eliminate people who "don't fit the robotic mold" of how they think things should be.  I know I don't invite my friends over, who are rooting for the opposite team, just to give them a hug and say "GG MAN..."  No, we rub it in each others face and have a good time at it when it comes to anything competitive.

Nope. There has to be something deeper. He's always been this way and everyone, everyone, accepts it, because in every industry there is someone people love to hate. Without a doubt that was idra in the SC world. It's good for business too, my best guess is that he some how really pissed off SirScoots. (Scott Smith, the COO of eG)

You know a guy is a piece of shit when you don't even play Starcraft 2 and you still hear about how fucking dumb he is.

Good. He was a complete jerk with an ego that far surpassed his skill (which is rather impressive because he is a good player).

I wouldn't go into his stream knowing full well that what I would get was rage quits and BM. You gotta learn that much like in a real life, if you want to be an ass, it will catch up to you.

It's refreshing to see that e-sports are at a level where we have our own divas and kooks.

Just like the Big Leagues.

Yeah I still don't know what to think about this... I don't think he's in the best mental state out side of StarCraft most of the people who watch him stream just do it to see him curse and rage quit.  While nobody really knows the story between Idra and Demu it looked completely immature and stupid.  If the whole situation this week was a one time thing I don't think EG would have really cared but he was really starting to get a reputation for being a bad sport.

He had a little feud with a team-mate (Demuslim) and that might have been a big factor in this. The comment he actually made seem like a convenient 'official' reason for dismissal to me. I watch his stream quite often and he's entertaining and still a top NA GM (which is no small feat). Maybe ROOT gaming would be interested, they've always had controversial players on their roster (Destiny, Catz, Puckk etc).

I have to side with most of the people here.  The only reason people know Idra or he has drawing power at this point is solely because of his BM and his history of rage quitting.  The guy hasn't won any tournaments in years.  He pretty much makes his money streaming and if you watch, his viewers are mostly people taunting him hoping to see him bm or rage quit.

The guy has been like this since the begining.  It was public knowledge before EG even signed him. SO it is strange that they fired him for something he was notorious for long before EG ever came around and for something that made EG more money probably than any "wins" he may have brought.  Then again, maybe EG was looking for a way to dump him for a while due to his bad attitude and its impact on the groups.  The viewers have gone from laughing at Idra's BM to laughing just at Idra.  Money or not, Idra has not only lost games but lost a lot of respect in the community.   Maybe EG felt they were better off spending their money on someone who could actually win games and still bring in viewers.

2bitSmOkEy
2bitSmOkEy

His toxic attitude spread through the community and his beliefs about never-ever-rush had a pretty negative impact on the game if you think about it.  I got a feeling that most people watched him just to see him rage and not so much for his gameplay.

That's what Dr. House would get IRL too. I also had a similar experience - it doesn't matter how good at work you are, if you're a jerk and treat people like shit, you gonna get the boot sooner or later. People indefinitely put up with shit only in works of fiction.

They keep kicking players out for being assholes but call themselves the Evil Geniuses.

They should use a different name like BFF Geniuses or the Political Correct Geniuses or whatever.

I never liked Idra but atleast he was interesting.

All this does is drain any personality away from the players. If they can't be themselves then the sport will grow even more boring than it already is.

Neo_Sarevok

I'm just trying to figure out why it took EG so long to kick him. I'm not even a faithful SC2 vet, yet even I could tell you the guy displayed a huge lack of sportsmanship.

Sad thing is some other team will probably just pick him back up. After all, winning is everything for some teams.

What kind of ass backwards logic is that? Wtf do you think is going to happen? This is the equivalent of banning the TD dance. Or firing The Rock for telling everyone to know your role and shut your mouth. You PAY them to be better than the community at gaming. So guess what? You pay for their egos too. He's a jerk with gaming skills. And he's in the business of entertainment. Oh no, how did that happen....really?? And then comes the whole trying not to scare away sponsors thing. Whatever helps you sleep. Meanwhile, they couldn't throw Bud Light at Steve Austin fast enough. Literally. Like playing basketball while dribbling quietly. Its not gonna happen, so cut the shit and let it be. Whether you think the person sucks or not, it probably costs more to terminate contracts and rehire than whatever you think it costs to let it slide. Point is, work with what you got and make it a sensation, because its only going to get worse.

he was incredibly overrated.  he has won anything in years.  The game has passed him by.  He's playing WoL in the HotS era. every one of his builds is ling, bling, muta.  It's like he doesn't know about the viper or the ultra buffs.

He's always been very rude to the community.  I think the only difference is he hasn't been winning lately.

If you are only watching SC2 streams for petty competitive attitudes and bitchy personalities, maybe you should make the switch to Desperate Housewives.

@ZIMdoom From what I understand, he said some reeeeeeally stupid stuff the other day on TL (which is also why he's banned for 90 days on TL's forums). When EG hired them, he was the player that had strong bm, but was without a doubt one of the best. Now, he's just an angry relic who hasn't done anything major in the past couple years. He really shot himself in the foot with his attitude.

blackothh
blackothh

@Morphine_OD you are so wrong about that its not even funny, people put up with it more in real life simply if someone can perform their job better then most, or are in a position of authority. its all about the bottom line. Idra probably would not have been let go if he won more.

But my personal opinion is that bad manners should not be tolerated at all, life is too short to be mad all the time.

Not sure of the relevance of this comment to the matter at hand (even if it was a general response to those who believe what I wrote).  It addresses nothing that was said nor has any logical assertions other than trying to agitate or troll a poster.   If you're one for trying to make witty comments as opposed to making a valuable contribution or add to the discussion, then more power to you.  Flame bait is something I consider rather juvenile, but I wholly support you in your endeavors if that's your thing.  Maybe a few people will like your comment, as drama brings friction and friction fans.  It's not the greatest thing, but sometimes it's just business, and it's also -one- reason why LoL consistently (and in my opinion unfortunately) beats out SC2 on Twitch in terms of viewers.  Competition and looking for fights brings the fans, having favorite players and teams the same.  A lot of people, for instance just go to hockey games hoping there will be a fight.  Don't take logic or reasoning as my acceptance, as I very clearly made it apparent that it's bad behavior and unfortunate that these things are so popular.  But my disagreement does not make it untrue, neither does it make me immune to certain allures of it in itself.  Have a good one, and I'll make sure to look up that show you mentioned.

AySz88

@AnimeFreaks I don't think it's about whether it's offensive per se - I'd guess it's more like his teammates and superiors have a different attitude, and are pissed at him (or ashamed of him) running counter to that.

brxricano

@FCT-Steve-O@brxricanolol I hear you but for example take why im laughing: do you know how sad that makes you look when you say that after losing in a VIDEO GAME? just meme his ass on YouTube and be done with it. you will be surprised how hell actually tone HIMSELF down or get booed off stage for good. Again, my point is, make a thing of it. Hire a referee for show or something to tell him to get off stage. Let the interviewer ask him why hes so pathetic. Something. Eventually he will quit anyway so honestly it leads to the same thing. The thing here is, what you cant report on is the fact that Greg has fans like it or not. so yes, you just lost viewers. You just lost money anyway. Im not emphasizing the money itself, I mention it because thats what keeps this esports thing alive. Which in turn keeps gaming alive. Maybe another gamer will offer a challenge to him: 3 rounds; I beat you and you have to apologize for the cancer thing and keep your mouth shut for the season. How many livestream hits is that right there?? Hes a rage quitter, how fun is that??? do something with that lol! If you think ppl would hate that then nobody would watch Rooster Teeth. Do something with it. But dont take the NFL route. Havent you noticed how pissed everyone gets when players get fined and flagged for dancing? Or throwing a gesture to the heavens in thanks while on one knee? Catering to crybabies is bullshit.

To sum up what im saying check this post above me if you scroll up: "Ok...this is huge...but who are we kidding, we love Esports drama, still i hope in the end Idra finds what he wants in life and EG continues to be a pretty good team."

shadow580:  "Idra got signed on with EG when they had the full knowledge of his past record of being BM. The only difference this time is that some people complained to the sponsors and all of the sudden his BM hurts the community. Give me a break!"

We got esports because gaming got this big. If you dont run it right, you kill it and kill gaming by that much. Then were all saying our goodbyes Gamespy style.

Everyone laughs when some comments give Spider Man cancer. Because ppl know its not about cancer, its about the comment. People see what they want to see though.
