Greenpeace slams Nintendo

Greenpeace gives Sony the highest rating of the console makers, whereas Nintendo manages to break records with its poor performance.

by

The results of the latest Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics are in, and as far as the green console wars go, Sony comes out on top.

Sony is praised for improved recycling and takeback, especially in the US, and more products free of toxic PVC as compared to last year. All these factors add up to give the Japanese giant a score of 7.3 out of 10.

Microsoft didn't fare as well, given that the Xbox 360 manufacturer has a long timeline for toxic-chemical elimination, as well as poor takeback policy and practice. Bill Gates' company scored only 2.7 out of 10.

However, Microsoft was positively lauded in comparison to Nintendo. The Mario factory found itself in last place not just among console makers but out of all of the electronics companies on the chart. Nintendo managed to score 0 out of 10, which, according to Greenpeace, makes them the first-ever global brand to score nothing across all criteria. However, as Greenpeace kindly put it, this allows "infinite room for future improvement."

The companies were rated on nine different categories, and given a rating of bad, partially bad, partially good, and good, with points allocated for each score. The categories were chemicals management, timeline for the precautionary principle (a chemicals policy), PVC phaseout, timeline for BFR phaseout, PVC-free and/or BFR-free models, individual producer responsibility, voluntary takeback, information to individual customers, and amounts recycled.

Heh, good job Greenpeace. Giving a zero to the one company that, according to the new article here: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6191284.html was the only one that fell within EU legal boundaries for phthalates in toys, and actually beat all the other companies in terms of EVERYTHING else that was tested for. Way to go. You guys are really on top of things there.

Seriously why do we care. Maybe for the people who want to go out and say their protecting the environment this would matter. In a few days everyone will just forget all about it.

The time for companies lollygagging and not being green are over. Thanks Greenpeace for showing which products are greener. The one about computer companies and their being green were also cool.

I read this on another site, and the reason why Nintendo scored a 0 was because it chose not to give out its waste management information to Greenpeace, so the company was given an automatic 0 for not supplying any information.

Hey I have an idea! Green Peace, instead of evaluating waste from video game companies, why don't you evaluate the amount of pollution coming from CHINA. Start your crap, you'll probably get shot. Global warming MY ASS, it's -33 here, and its freaking still NOVEMBER!!! I'm going to burn some old motor oil to speed up the process. :/

Next time I tear up the woods in my Ford Excursion , whilst dumping garbage out of the window, and doing bunny burn-outs, I will think about this Greenpeace article. Laugh.

I don't wanna defend Nintendo, or Microsoft or diss Sony, but I wanna say that it's tipycal of the so called "pro earth" organizations, that always throw dirt at whichever country they want, so misguided people start speaking against other countries, and so racism is born (sometimes). Now the worst in my list are Human Rights Watch, Greenpeace and the worst yet created the "PETA".

Its a shame that people are more loyal to Nintendo and M$ then they are to the future of the whole bloody human race. It's a damm shame to believe that what the ENTIRE human race will be done in by VIDEO GAME STYSTEMS! wars... plages...meteors.....no.no.no. VIDEO GAME SYSTEMS oooo god the seas are boiling with blood! I also funny that people think that they can change the world when they need to change them selves

King Koop: You actually took me seriously? Oh wait, fan-boy. jk, jk. I could care less about this subject either. I still will buy Nintendo software until they become some crappy third party publisher, which of course, won't happen right? So, there you go. Oh, and hoorah for greenpeace in trying to maintain a clean world.

ive seen alot of companys production process and they recycle as much as they can, so if nintendo scored a 0 i think they just didnt tell greenpeace anything or show them anything and were given an automatic 0 for it all

YukoAsho - read up on the topic from other news sources and comments. You will see the use of 'Nintendo' in the headline was to increase hits or stir debate. I can almost see Sony not being included because they at least got a 'C', but really. Or I guess I could see your point of view of a 2.7 of 10 being ok, definately not slammed.

YukoAsho

raahsnavj - Nintendo rated lower than EVERYBODY! Of course they're going to be in the headline.

"the evil humans who eat chicken".. ....Your thinking of Peta. . ..and as for all the "hippy" comments, that noun actually stopped being relevant about 15 years before most of you were born... you might actually understand that if you based your world views on something other than South Park.

Awesome! GS strikes again with their nintendo slamming. For non-biased reporting it should have read: "Greenpeace slams console makers". First the reviews and now even the news around here is getting useless.

I just say (in general): -Don't like a device that's bad for my health and neither the people who develops it. -I think a device that is more efficient an uses less energy is better designed than one that uses more for the same job. -And about the global warming I don't know why the media is scaring people over the world, If there is a problem it's a matter of governments to solve it. But as that would mean to do an economical sacrifice everyone is waiting for the others to do it and trying to scare their people so that their governments are forced to take part. Just like it happened with the bird flu and governments around the world being forced to buy some medical product, which I don't remember now.

also, why was there no factoring in of hardware failure rates. any Nintendo console will outlast three or four PS2s or X360s, surely making a hugely diferent outcome?

@subrosian - Like I said, I completely agree. I endorse a Theodore Roosevelt view of preserving the beauty of our planet, I'm just not a fan of Greenpeace itself. Some of the comments in this entry make me weep for the future. I can only hope that thread is a case of the vocal minority. :|

It's interesting that the gamespot version left imporant information out. This is the information that 1up included. "What caused Nintendo's low score? Poor chemical management and precautions were major factors, but it is worth noting the survey is based entirely upon information found publicly on company Web sites. If no information can be found on a particular factor, it's scored as a 0, which occurred with Nintendo in 4 out of the 9 categories. Nintendo may have managed a higher score if the company Web site shared more public info on waste takeback and recycling. They're not necessarily hurting the environment as much as the report suggests, simply not providing enough information about it. Perhaps Greenpeace's report will simply start requesting information not found on company Web sites." So maybe MS and Nintendo aren't the evil doers that Greenpeace implies. Maybe they just don't have that information on their website and Greenpeace should request it if it's not there instead of just handing out 0's.

It's funny that people are taking this as gospel, Nintendo didn't provide the information that Greenpeace wanted so they took a lot of liberties when the gave Nintendo the rating, so therefore the rating is flawed. And as people have said the Wii uses less electricity than a lot of the other electronics out there including the 360 and PS3, why isn't that part of Greenpeace's criteria?

It's only natural that Sony - one of the largest electronics manufacturers - is implementing actively these "green" policies. The fact is, sooner or later everybody will have to, so it's better to start early. Microsoft is making it's machine through reputed factories of electronics, who are also in the proces of "turning green" - of course not at the speed of Sony, but still. The score of Nintendo is amazing though - 0 out of 10 - which means that they are producing their stuff in very antiquated facilities, and have not invested one penny in upgrading these facilities in the last 3-5 years. Also, their selling policies are outdated. I am pretty sure Nintendo will soon get better, as now they have enough money to invest in a cleaner production.

I have no problem with Greenpeace or any other organization like it, and neither should the rest of you. I just think all of these organizations need to change their supposedly selfless, slogans of Save the Earth to the more appropriate, selfish and accurate... Save Humanity. See in the end, short of something cataclysmic happening, such as the sun going supernova, the earth isn't going anywhere... humans are. even if we kill our selves off because of the pollution we create, in the end the earth will reclaim and repair it's self, sure it will take time, but it will happen. If you need proof, it's as simple as looking out side... See that grass growing in the crack in the side walk? See that tree growing in the crack in the road? Want a bigger, better, more extreme example look at the most recent shots of the areas surrounding Chernobyl, wild life and plant life are abundant and thriving. there are even shots of weeds and other plant life growing on the upper floors and roofs of buildings. Conclusion, the earth isn't going anywhere humans are.

pp222 - right, it would have been the same, once again the gaming community demonstrates its maturity with terms like "suck it", "hippy", and "pwned". Way to go gamers. Approach this with maturity. If Greenpeace is wrong, show them they're wrong by asking Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft what steps they've taken to reduce the environmental footprint of their consoles, and what they do to ensure a sustainable business model. And if they're not taking those steps, or not doing enough, we should be glad for watchdog groups - yes even fringe groups, for calling attention to an issue we may not think about often enough. Either way, the reaction here towards Greenpeace is utterly immature. Way to stereotype environmentalists, make vast assumptions, and have a knee-jerk reaction...

pp222
pp222

Wow, what a stupid ranking. Even Sony fanboys should see that. Neither Nintendo nor Microsoft deserves this low, anyone who actually takes a look at the report should be able to see how credibile it is. Also peacenutman, it would have been the same no matter which console maker that had ranked lowest.

snakenamedjoe is right. If you actualy read the 'report' you see that it either very poorly done, or they just looked over websites to see if the companies declared anything pro-green that they do. All that means is sony basically posted lots of pro-green stuff it probably doesn't give a toss about, microsoft did it a bit and nintendo didn't. In reality it could well be that nintendo does more pro-green stuff than microsoft or sony but didn't publicise it like sony did. If greenpeace plan on 'slamming' a company they should at least have hard facts not something pathetic like this. Is this gunna help people tackle global warming..............no, it just destroys greenpeace credibility and makes people wanna stay far away from them.
