Green PSP boosts sales in Japan

Newly released hue for Sony's portable sends the handheld to the top of the pops in Japan.

The latest colour in the PlayStation Portable palette went on sale in Japan on February 28 and launched the handheld to the top of this week's charts.

According to figures released today by sales tracking firm Media Create, the PSP is top dog for the week of February 25 to March 2 in the Japanese hardware charts, selling 73,706 units.

Next up was the Wii, which sold 64,535 units, followed by the DS Lite with 51,922 units and the PlayStation 3 with 13,520. Still going strong is the PlayStation 2, which totted up 10,986 in sales despite the availability of three next-generation platforms. The Xbox 360 brought up the rear with 2,282 consoles sold.

The mint-green PSP was announced in January, and Sony said in a statement that the new colour was designed to attract female users (and all those who like flowers).

In the software charts, Gundam Musou Special for the PlayStation 2 went straight in at number one, knocking Super Smash Bros. Brawl off the top slot. Gundam Musou Special sold 149,846 copies in its first week on sale, followed by Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii Fit.

Wish there was more colors to choose from when I got my DS. I would've loved a green or blue one. And, I mean a solid color, not the black bottom and whatever top.

It wasn't that long ago most of the people commenting called PSP one of Sonys' big failures. Hmm, same people you called PS3 a failure too. Well to be just to the DS, everyone in Japan already owns at least one of them so the PSP taking over in sales isn't that surprising (it took over a while ago)

Now, I will forever understand why companies bring out all these colors outside of NA, specifically in JP, because people will go out, trade in their old system, and buy the new one in a new color. A mint-green colored PSP got them to the top of the charts. Just like the Slim, which was in six colors in Japan initially, along with a couple of special editions, boosted sales to the top as well. And the white 40GB PS3 was able to help it beat the Wii in Japan, which was a huge deal. I don't think that having more colors is gonna hurt the US market, but we don't eat up new colors like other territories like EU and JP do. And whoa, I had no idea a Gundamn game could be Brawl and Wii Fit, in Japan no less. Jeez. As far as Brawl doing well here, I know it will, but the amount of hardcore gamers with a Wii isn't higher enough for it to hit the sales that everybody expects it will as far as I'm concerned. @ Fridge-Raider It's kinda common sense, but the reason why Brawl is in this news article, is because the article isn't just about how the mint-green PSP boosted sales in JP, it's also somewhat about JP sales numbers as a whole, which is while software sales were mentioned.

oh you just wait. when brawl hits north america...Wii ftw hands down. no chance in hell

I'm With TalonComics. I do not care about the psp and how it sells in Japan. Why are there so many articles saying how stuff sells in Japan and not that many in North America. And the PSP is for a whole different company so why put that news in Brawl info? Also Brawl will FREAKING ROCK!!!!! I am so getting it on Sunday!

I can't believe that Smash Bros. isn't number one!! :'(

Why is this news published in the Super Smash Bros. info? Frankly, I really don't care about the Japanese gaming market. It's pretty obvious their market does not correspond to the North American one. I would assume the PS2 market there is still viable because there is a ridiculous amount of games (*cough* date sims *cough* porn *cough*) available there that couldn't be sold in the states.

A color would boost the sale of a console? And I thought Japanese were smart. As smart as they look, I didn't expect something like that from them.

Got my PSP last week and I love it. I got the silver Daxter edition which is a pretty sweet deal. Comes with a 1 gb memory card, the Daxter game (fun) and a Family Guy UMD with 5 really good episodes on it. Well worth it for $200 bucks.

Why does Japan go crazy over a new color every single time? Whether it is a new color for DS or PSP, they go nuts and sales boost tremendously. Strange.

I never knew colour changes everything! Nintendo quickly make as many colours as you can, surely you will arise then!

What some people don't understand is that in Japan, the same camera or cell phone comes in about a dozen different colours on top of the design variations. For a society where people tend to comform, there are so many variations compared the western countries. So when a new colour DS or PSP comes out, people rush out to buy it.. Happened with the PS2 as well. When I saw the white ones being brought out, I heard a few people say " hey the white looks nice, let's buy it." Probably explains why most japanese switch cell phones every few months.

and this has what to do with Brawl and Wii Fit??? and the "MInt Green PSP" doesn't even look green, either I'm going colour blind or it is a very, very light green colour. :D

If Gundam Musou Special so hot in Japan, why can't North America get it?

I love my DS, but I'm afraid it has peaked. The PSP on the other hand is just hitting it's stride. If it was'nt for the excellent Castlevania games on the DS, I would trade up for a PSP in a heartbeat.

atrimus "I have a black and a white PSP, I don't play either, so no point buying another, unless I need a third paper weight, but then I still have my PS3 for that" well, since you like to waste money on semi-expensive consoles that you don't play, why don't you send some of it my way. i could surely use a new Slim PSP (silver, black, green, whatever) for Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just go and buy one then or send me a cheque for £50 ($100) and I will post you a PSP

It isn't even mint-green. It's more of a chalky blue.

When will this color fad translate to consoles? I just don't get why these companies don't release 360s and PS3s in multiple colors... It would almost certainly boost sales.

How the hell does the PSP sell strongly when good games are infrequently released for it? What on Earth are people playing on their PSPs? Maybe people use them as mobile porn storage devices!
