Green Day: Rock Band coming next year

MTV Games and Harmonix follow up Beatles: Rock Band with a full Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 game dedicated to the San Francisco Bay Area pop-punk group.

For decades, music fans have asked who the next Beatles would be. When it comes to the Rock Band franchise, the answer is Green Day. In a taped appearance at tonight's VGAs ceremony, the members of Green Day announced that there will be an entire Rock Band game dedicated to their music a la The Beatles: Rock Band.

Want to be an American Idiot?

Ironically, tonight's announcement was the second time the San Francisco Bay Area band had revealed Green Day: Rock Band. Although Harmonix and MTV Games wouldn't confirm the news at the time, Green Day lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong told a radio station in June that a Rock Band dedicated to the group's music was due later in 2009. Armstrong was mistaken, but only about one thing; it is actually set for 2010.

When it arrives, Green Day: Rock Band will feature the band's music, "favorite venues," and onstage imagery. A handful of gameplay clips accompanied the address, featuring virtual representations of the band performing "American Idiot" amid the familiar four-player interface of Rock Band.

Unlike with The Beatles, Green Day's dedicated game won't mark its debut in rhythm games. Three of the band's songs from 21st Century Breakdown have already been added to the Rock Band downloadable catalog, and another three from the album are set to debut December 15.

[UPDATE] In a subsequent press release, MTV Games said Green Day: Rock Band was in development for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. The game's song list will be fully exportable, allowing its songs to be played in Rock Band and Rock Band 2.

@ Lee_Syaoran there is a difference between innovative and talented. the beatles aren't all that technically brilliant by any stretch of the imagination especially by today's standards so to say that is truth. you disagreeing was supported by evidence which proved nothing but the fact that they were extremely influential and innovative in music a fact no one can dispute. but talented that is debatable and likely you will lose that one.

i think this will be a good game.its diferent from all of the "classic rock" rock bands that people want.it will be a lot different.and what i dont get is why people r sayin that its gonna be really easy.but it actualy wont be as easy as u think.some songs will be kinda easy, but who cares,if u liked the band,u would still buy it.and i think its a smart move to pick green day for a full game cuz they are different and they arent another classic rock band that get their own games.they r realy popular modern band, and i think it will make a lot of money.i would even go to say that they r as good as the beatles.i know its kinda crazy, but a lot of their stuff is realy good.and people also say that their newer stuff is stupid, but its just different.its a lot more edgier and alternative.its not full out punk, but its still realy good.

I guess the logical thing to do now is wait to see if the game will actually sell. From what i see there are quite a number of detractors vs ppl who actually support it. @cabal23 The Beatles aren't talented? I can accept your previous comment when you said that they do not float your boat as everyone is entitled to their opinions but The Beatles were one of innovators of many music styles which you see nowadays. For example they are one of the first Bands to use Guitar feedback in a record, if not the first (Thanks to a famous George Harrison accident). Also Artificial Double tracking you can hear from Revolver is also fore-ran by The Beatles and can be heard later in probably the most famous song by the band you branded amazing (which i whole heartedly agree), Bohemian Rhapsody. And that is just 2 of the many things they brought into music. I don't mean to knock you but seriously, Not talented is not the word to describe The Beatles.

screw all the haters. If you're a true green day fan you'd like all their old and new stuff.

this should be a really good game. because just like many bands, green days style and lyrics have changed so much throughout the years. look at dookies songs, then nimrod, then warning, and 21st century breakdown. the music from all those is different from the rest. a game that is based mostly on one band doesnt mean most of the songs are gonna sound alike. this will probably be better than most ppl are ranting on about.

@ CaptainHerlock Queen? What's your point. Is it that you are a homophobic person and trying to peg me as queer or that I really do think Queen was an amazing band? Yes they were amazing and one of favorite songs is Under Pressure with Bowie. And yes we all know rock and roll started before I was born. 73 to be exact. My point was the general reaction to music back then isn't what it is today. Rarely do you see rows and rows of bawling girls , pulling their hair out these days. Why do you think there was such an uproar over the Beatles? People were burning their records in the streets. Because the US Christian right feared their effect on listeners. The same thing happened with Elvis, another rock first who shook the music world with a new sound. I did say they weren't talented, but if they came along today they would not induce the hysteria they did in the 1960's. So that made them the fortunate poster boys of rock and roll at that time because they were the forefront of a very new sound and new movement in music. I never said they sucked, I just feel they are overrated just a bit.

It will be the easiest Rock Band ever: Play 3 chords per song! Sing that catchy, marketable tune! Play that generic backbeat! Be a rebel teen! Yeah! Cool! Rad! My curfew is 10 but I stay out 'till 12 to piss off my mom and my stepdad! You're not the boss of me, Randy!!! DX

@Asm92784: Really? That is interesting... On the other hand, Dookie was the band's breakout album, and American Idiot sold 6 million after we came into the iPod era (I'm pretty sure in overall sales Americian Idiot pwned Dookie). Nicely done Metallica. I'm not saying Metallica's bad, they're pretty good, if not my favorite in the world. Still, pretty much all you hear from them is yelling (in terms of singles and such). I'm not saying that to rip on them, again I think they're probably the best metal band you're going to find, but from what I've heard they don't change their style much. Then again, I like AC/DC, so whatever. :P

@DMLSLAT not to get in the middle of your argument, or start a new one, but for the record, Metallica's black album is something like the 25th best selling album in the US ever, and I am pretty sure it is in the top 50 worldwide, having sold over 15 million copies in the US (22 million world wide). Green Day's best selling album was Dookie and only sold 10 Million in the US (15 million world wide). Total world wide Metallica has sold over 100 million albums where as Green Day has sold only around 22 million total. The Black Album alone world wide has sold more than all of Green Day's Albums. Although personally I dont really care for Green Day, I'm not trying to bash them, just trying to correct some facts. Also Metallica has plenty of songs that aren't "angry". Just to mention a few: Fade to Black, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, and Hero of the Day.

@lmanzini: I agree (especially about Miley Cyrus :P). I'm not saying it reflects talent, I'm saying Green Day has made a lot of money and are popular, so whether you like them or not, this is a good call on Harmonix's part, because they'll make money off of it. However, even Miley Cyrus must appeal to people somehow to become rich. In her case she appeals to little girls by having her agents write little girl songs. Green Day appeals to me because imo, the lyrics are great, they have something to say, and the music blends really well. No, Billie Joe doesn't make the most complex guitar parts in the world, but there are a fair few that, if you actually play them on guitar (as opposed to just listening to them), are pretty challenging. And, more importantly, to me it just sounds good. That's all that really matters. ;)

DMLSLAT
DMLSLAT

@firesage423: I'm not getting emotional. I'm just saying calm down and quit whining. You haven't proven anything, because you haven't mentioned a fact to back up your argument about how your music's great and everyone else's sucks. In any case, I imagine Metallica has more money than Green Day because they've been around a long time. That said, Green Day has been around for 20 years, and I guarantee you Dookie, American Idiot, and 21st Century Breakdown all sold way more than any single Metallica album. Can you provide me with a song Metallica has played that isn't angry? Loving Satan? Brutality? Now you just sound... evil... That's kinda scary. And all of the above involve hate. "The knowing your enemy?" Aside from the grammar failure, it's the name of a song, not an ideal. And fights tend to start because of drunk people at concerts no matter what genre the music is. Look, I'm fine with you sticking up for your music. I don't really care, you can like the music you want to like. I don't care much whether metal is popular or not, either. As for MTV, it doesn't matter what they air, people won't buy the music if they don't like it. Just chill, you're getting worked up over nothing.

WTF....

OK, I think many of you need to realize something. Yes, Billie Joe isn't the greatest guitarist in the world, and Green Day's songs aren't the most complicated either, but they've got one thing that most bands don't. Good, catchy song writing. Anytime one of you wishes to write and release over 100 critically and public acclaimed infectiously catchy songs, you go right ahead and do that. Your bank account will benefit from it, so why wouldn't you? Having played drums and guitar in many bands myself I can tell you the hardest thing to do is write a GOOD catchy song. Green Day has managed to do that, and remain relevant over two decades in this overly finicky MTV age. That's nothing to scoff at. I'd even go as far as to compare Green Day as the Beatles of their respective genre. Yeah, I went there. Their rythym section is actually quite good, Tre Cool is a very good drummer and Mike Dirnt has his own interesting and unique style. I've had no interest in any of these games in the past, but I will seriously consider picking this one up. Green Day has always been a good band, it's time people started to realize that.

@Cabal23 What band would I have chosen. That's easy; Queen.

CaptainHerlock
CaptainHerlock

@Cabal23 If you think that The Beatles came alone at a time when rock n' roll was "new and exciting" you seriously need history lesson. By 1962 the original stars had been replaced by the "teen idol", who were having songs written FOR THEM by tin pan alley writers in an effort to SANITIZE rock n' roll. Calling them "fortunate talented poster boys" has to be one of the more inane comments I've ever seen or heard about them. It's obvious you know nothing about music or the history of rock n' roll. Saying that older fans are those going back to the 90's shows it. Rock n' roll did not begin with the year of your birth. And it certainly doesn't end with your knowledge of it. Incidentily, Green Day is essentially The Ramones with one less member. The same exact progressions and the same fake British accent. Learn your history, them come talk to me.

lloydy-46

Why are people telling harmonix to not become like activision? Are they that sad? They're not your friends. they're game developers. Stop trying to talk to them. Green Day have fans that play video games. The Beatles' are either dead or not arsed to play games. And there are those who pretend to like them because they think they'll sound cool. They were the first proper band, of course, but would you want to play a racing game where the only car you use is a Daimler made of wood, or a new Ferrari, or a Veyron? And Metallica/AC/DC/Aerosmith/Beatles fans, shut up, you've had your game, now let the Green Day fans have their game.

Haven't they beat this dead horse with a stick long enough? All people are doing is paying another 60 bucks on skins and backgrounds that you can only look at. The songs if people weren't so stupid would be put up on the marketplace for a dollar or two for a song....Am I the only one who understands this? PLEASE stop flooding the market with the same game!!!!!

firesage423
firesage423

@Cabal23 they cant to a modern band cause modern bands dont have a play list to make a full game.. they need an older band who can fork up a playlist worthy of a game.. but more of a modern band could be lamb of god, more metal acctually make the game a challange like GH: Metallica was.. and i like how on this whole discussion board anti-greenday comments that are acctually proving points are getting thumbs down.. yet greenday fans r just being 12 year old fangirls.. lol

What most people haven't figured out is the did the market analysis on this already. Do you really think they just threw out a band and said lets make another game out of them? They did research and interviewed thousand of people. This is how market research for a product works. No company is going to take a risk without some sort plan. Green day transcends where other bands can't. They have an old following (90's), and a new following with the younger kids. Not many modern bands have that. Other choices I could have seen are : RHCP, Nirvana (NEVER going to happen), GNR, Pearl Jam,. They can't keep making classic rock games because that would ultimately be very boring unless you are a classic rock fan. Most 15-25 years old adults are listening to music a bit more current. And as for thinking Green Day sucks, that is a silly comment. Everyone has bands they like and don't like. I think the Beatles were over rated and came a long in a time when Rock and Roll was really new and exciting so they were the fortunate talented poster boys. Frankly in my opinion they had 5-10 really quality songs, the rest was filler. Call me a blasphemer, but they just don't stir my loins like say the Mastodon or the Deftones do. The best thing is you don't have to buy it if your don't want. I am not a big Green Day fan, but my 16 year old nephew is. Huge. That is the audience they are shooting for. Not some has been 30-40 year old guy who still listens to AC DC on the way to his factory job.
