GRAW2 demo invades Live

Gamers given a sneak peek at Ubisoft's newest take on terror in near future; PlayStation 3 version set for June deployment.

by

Confirming rumors from late last week, Ubisoft today has released the first demo for its upcoming military shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 over Xbox Live Marketplace. The timing of the release gives players more than a full month to try out the game before the retail version hits stores in March.

The free demo concentrates on the single-player portion of the game and is set during the second level of the full version. Gamers will suit up as US soldier-of-the-future Scott Mitchell as he heads into Mexico as a lone wolf. Though he won't initially be accompanied by flesh-and-blood support, he will have some high-tech tools at his disposal, including the UAV Cypher and M.U.L.E. support drones.

Also released over Xbox Live is a new trailer for GRAW2 (above right), featuring a cover of Iggy Pop and the Stooges' "Gimme Danger" sung by former Pixies frontman Frank Black.

There was also a bit of news for those anticipating the PlayStation 3 version of the game. Last week, Ubisoft revealed that it was delaying the PS3 version of GRAW2 to its next fiscal year. Today, the company narrowed its release date to June.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is rated T for Teen and will be released on the Xbox 360, PS3, PlayStation Portable, and PC. For more information, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Downloading it now but I have to say I am not particularly excited about it. They can't have spent enough time greatly developing it from the original and I am just expecting more of the same. I love GRAW but to be honest, I would rather they spent time finishing of Assasins Creed.

I'll still buy it but it was GRAW 1.5 and not GRAW 2 and that's a bit dissapointing if GRAW 3 doesn't show MAJOR improvments over 2 I won't buy it. Don't become EA, Ubi!

Is there anything wrong with more GRAW?

Finally got around to playing it (dang Lumines content has got me hooked)... not really feeling it. Doesn't look any better than GRAW visually, in fact it's really rough around the edges -- isn't this thing supposed to be coming out really soon? Wasn't really feeling the gameplay either, but I'll admit I'm more of a Rainbow Six kinda guy.

i agree feels like an expansion really. for one i think they need to add in a first person view of the gun so that u can actually have more control of the gun. i mean what was actually so new about the game the graphics were better but i felt it wasnt very good. GRAW got very boring after a while i thought and just played it for the achievments. ubisoft have got some work to do me thinks

Demo was ok. It felt like GRAW 1.5 and not GRAW 2. Ubisoft needs to get thier act together and stop rushing games out. The last few were very buggy. PG Gamer voted Ubisoft buggest publisher. At first it was just PC games needing patches now the console games need patches. Yeah it looks good but how well will this be tested before we get it.

Vodoo, all you need to do is take a walk over to the Ubi forums and see how wrong you are. The average turn around time for game-crippling bugs for the most recent Splinter Cell and R6: Vegas is still ticking. New patches aren't properly tested, fix a few small things but break critical components of the game, and do not respond / inform the community of what they intend to do to remedy the situation. The original tactical shooter genre brought in by Red Storm Entertainment before their buyout by Ubi was second to none, however now they've figured out a way to push out 3 titles every six months or so using the same base engine but slightly different tweaks and different content assets to sucker you into a constant episodic revenue stream, and rush QA for all platforms in order to get the next wave out the door.

SpeedNut_CV... Ubisift is one of the best developers/publishers in the entire world. Their single player efforts in all its Tom Clancy games are second to none, while their multiplayer games are some of the most inventive and plain out fun shooters around. If there was ever a code/online problem or glitch, it was USUALLY fixed in a timely manner. Of course I am speaking as an Xbox/Xbox 360 owner, which Ubi has always given particular attention to.

The lighting is making a difference and it does look better but I want them to take the single player and make the multi player run just like it does. That's what I'm waiting for.

Just Played it, its amazing, so much better than the first one. Commanding the soldiers are better, thank you UBISoft. Its more fun, the visuals are amazing, real class looking a bit like Half-life 2 with HD lighting, smoke is much better and the wind and other graphics looks and feels more real. i can't wait for the Multi-Player demo, can't wait for the Game. PS3 got to wait for this bad boy.

If this is anything like the crap code they put into the latest Splinter Cell and R6: Vegas, prepare to be disappointed. Just check out the official Vegas Ubi forums and you'll see threats of lawsuits, to the community end users creating text-based dedicated server which Ubi stole, added an incorrect instruction doc to, and released their own, then covered the evidence with an unfortunate "forum crash". Ubi makes rushed out the door crap, just look at the files in the PC version of Vegas, there's still bits of 360 AND PS3 code, config files, etc. all thrown in it.

Just played the demo myself. Game looks more like an expansion pack rather than a whole new game. I see very little graphical or audio improvements yet and the controls have not changed dramatically. Considering the excellent use of the LT button in Rainbow Six Vegas, its strange that GRAW II has stayed with the old, awkward way of taking cover. I appreciate that its only a demo before anyone starts flaming me!

Because my 360 keeps on freezing I had to sending it back to microsoft so that they could fix and because of that I can't play the demo of GRAW2 or Crackdown.

Just because PS3 has blue ray does not mean they are going to be getting more stuff on their game it's going to be the exact same game.

I was surprised to see this demo yesterday. There was no mention of it at all. Nice work Ubi! Now, it's too bad the game isn't that much different.

"Only thing I didn't like about the original GRAW was the online spawn campers. They ruined it. If that is fixed, then I'll be happy. " Oh god, i'd forgot about them. that was so cheap and annoying. but its always down to the individual player's style of play, so i can't see anything being done about it except maybe allowing longer spawn protection

Oh man its soooooo good. I felt that the MP on the original was the most fair in a game and so I look forward to another great experience!

additional features? why should the PS3 have more than all the other platforms? after all just because you paid more and waited longer for a PS3 doesnt entitle you to more game from cross platform games my friend.

GRAW has always been my bread and butter and quite honestly I think GRAW2 is the best demo released on Xbox Live ever. Killer graphics, better control, smarter AI. Very fun times. I love the DEMO.:)

I think this game is going to be awesome... It reinvents what a modern first person shooter should be... Ive always wanted to be able to call in for air support... There is no game out there that offers this... Smoke effects looks awesome... And I like the real time concept, so as the sun goes down the shadows of buildings and objects change... Its an great concept which brings more depth the over all game quality.... I thought the first GRAW was awsome.... I was never really into any of the Ghost Recon games until I played GRAW for X360. GRAW was and is one of the best X360 games hands down.... And GRAW2 looks like its going to be a game worthy of one of the best games for 07... I am so tempted to pick it up for my 360 but will wait for it to hit PS3...

The game seems like much more than GRAW 1.5 to me... The graphics are noticeably better - which is REALLY saying something considering how good the original GRAW looked. The action seems to be a lot more intense, especially towards the end of the demo. Also, adding the medic class adds a whole new strategy to your gaming. Throw in a 50% larger online co-op mission, new controlable vehicles, and new ways to use the cross-cam; and it looks like Ubi Soft has another HUGE hit on its hands.

PS3 owners have to wait because the makers still have to get used to or figure out how to use the motion sensing and everything... so now we just wait!

2 thumbs down, 2 hands down this game is a no buy. why didnt they just make an expansion pack. 60 bucks for new maps and people get mad about 10 dollars for a map pack, now thats a rip off.

The demo was preatty cool. All of the new features are welcome newcomers to the game. The only thing i have against it is that the demo is just so dam short, well i guess its enough to wet my appetite for more, now i cant wait for teh game to come out

God damn that demo kicked ass. The new control system for the UAV is awesome.. and I love how you can see through the eyes of your soldiers. I did find it a but funny that I could move the camera around in that view, suggesting that I can literally move the guy's head remotely lol.. but I suppose what I'm moving is just the camera on his helmet rather than his head. Anyway.. the explosions look awesome, but of course the demo was too short to fully appreciate all the new graphical effects in GRAW2. The real time progression is not something that could be observed in a time limited demo like this.. after all, 15min isn't enough time to allow the sun to move around you and change lighting conditions. The controls were perfect again.. very intuitive, and reminded me of the first game righta way. I really can't wait to get my hands on this one :)
