Grand Theft Auto V features mandatory install and two Xbox 360 discs

Rockstar says that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs; both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will feature an 8GB mandatory installation.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs, but adds that players won't be required to swap discs when playing.

Instead, the first Grand Theft Auto V disc features a mandatory 8GB install, which means console owners without sufficient storage will need to secure either a hard drive or a USB stick.

"If using a USB flash drive it must be at least USB 2.0 with a minimum 15mb/s read speed and formatted for Xbox 360 use," wrote Rockstar in a Q&A post. "A new USB flash drive is recommended to ensure optimum performance."

Once installed, the game will be played entirely from the second disc.

The PlayStation 3 version, meanwhile, will ship on one Blu-ray disc and will also feature a mandatory 8GB install. This will take place when the game is first played.

Rockstar also added that the multiplayer component to GTAV is called Grand Theft Auto Online and that more information about the game's online modes will be released in the summer.

Elsewhere, Rockstar also reiterated its position on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. "We don't have anything to share about the possibility of a next-gen or a PC platform release at this time," said the publisher.

Grand Theft Auto V will be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.

This goes to show they are not that bright.....money is money, leaving out pc, at their own peril.  I can spend my money on someone else's game...their lost.

@pidow Sure they would make more money from the Pc version, I doubt they want to deal with all of the piracy on pc though.

just buy this game next year when it gets released on PS4/X-BOX1  with all the dlc on it.  You know they are gonna do that. Rockstar is not gonna wait another 5 years to finally bring out a game for next generation.

I wish all games could be installed on to your console, Would cut most of the loading times in half.

You can get 8GB flash drives for just a few bucks, but still...if the install is that important to them, they can include one with the game.

This entire generation has been held back by the Xbox 360. All cross platform games had to be dumbed down to fit on DL-DVD disc (approx 8 Gigs) for the 360, meanwhile PS3 exclusives like the Uncharted series have games pushing 50 Gigs of data and high resolution textures. If you have not played Uncharted 2 or 3, you haven't seen what this current generation of consoles is actually capable of. XBone users may finally get the chance to see what PS3 users have been experiencing for the last 5 years. Thanks for brining your console up to the cutting edge of 2006 technology Microsoft.

@CWhidmore Yeah, Metal Gear Solid 4 had to be cut down so it wouldn't be two blu-rays.  Imagine if Kojima let it get that crazy?

@CWhidmore go check a pc game that has better graphics than any ps3 game and be surprised to find a DL-DVD, your argument is invalid...sorry

CWhidmore
CWhidmore

@bmramos I'm not sure you understand how computers work, less data means lower resolution graphics and less detailed environments. Can PCs process more information than a console yes, but when you have games like Uncharted that are specifically designed to absolutely max out the capabilities of a system that's different. Keep in mind you are still playing dumbed down versions of the game if they are cross platform, so again, you haven't seen what the current gen is capable of, your entire understanding of computers is invalid...sorry

@THCpariah Yes, I own every console and a high end PC for gaming. So I would be more of a fanboy if I owned only a PS3, or only a PC and made incredibly stupid statements like a PC game with 8 Gigs of game data has better graphics than a game with 50 Gigs of data. THAT would be embarrassing. THAT would be fanboy behavior. Thanks for your interest though! : )

@dimitripassos why? PC's have to be constantly upgraded and updated. I know I been building mine for years. Also PC's constantly have software issues.... who wants that nonsense all the time.

Yea cos it's not like you want us all to buy the current gen versions as well as the next gen versions of GTA 5 is it! Although I totally would :D

For Xbox users(Such as myself)you should not even complain because for one we have had many different games over the past few years that require a mandatory install two at least we dont have to switch discs constantly its a nice and hefty install which means the game is longer and more detailed which alost means you get more bang for your buck(like most games should be) and finally if you dont have space you either need a bigger harddrive(mine is 320...try ebay or something) or you need to erase some unused crap from your  harddrive....and if its a long install even better unlike most ill install it then get ready for a long play(Go to the bathroom get my drink make sure my headset works tell my family to leave me alone and if they smell something after a few days to check for my corpse ect ect) so stop complaining as for those saying ps3 is better please stfu because this is not the place for it this console gen war is over and believe it or not it was a stale mate please dont make me elaborate as i am 360 and my brother is PS3

"Grand Theft Auto V features mandatory install and two Xbox 360 discs" - Which is why I proudly pre-ordered my PS3 Special Edition, which according to many people is the BEST version for GTA 5. Besides, the game was demoed to journalists using the PS3 and apparently, it ran flawless. I don't mind the mandatory install. It's the no.of discs that irritates me. Not a difficult decision as far as I am concerned.

I hope PC users suffer while we get to play it on our consoles they call paperweights.

pharoe777

Well if this was a feed on MGS4 then you might have a knowledgeable dispute, though playstation exclusives still made their way over to the xbox360 with no issues (final fantasy, and the latest METAL GEAR RISING).  I won't be getting a ps4 because my ps3 still serves as a perfectly good paper weight.  Back to the original argument, doesn't matter how many disc, you'll still get to play the game, if you already have a 360 you're not going to go buy a diff console because of how many disc you have to install.

Al_Capwn

Why is it being on pc or not even such a big deal? Aren't consoles cheap enough to buy that most people own them now?

Don't know how this comment section turned into some sort of hostile "pc-gamers are elitist" kinda thing, but my theory on why Rockstar wont release some of their games (or none at all) on PC is probably because of piracy. They're most likely unwilling to deal with potential loss in sales due to illegal downloads of their games. I personally am not against PC-gaming, since I tend to play both on consoles and PC. Some games just don't play out right on console (such as strategy games or some FPS ones).

But I digress...

Xbox 360 has had this issue with multiple discs ever since games started to expand into bigger and bigger sizes. Unfortunate, but unavoidable.

Finally M$ took the brave step of going over to BluRay with their Xone.

And this is coming from a Sony fanboy. Yes, I can be reasonable and discuss as adults.

What's with all the PC elitists? I mean, I'm a PC gamer myself (as well as a console gamer) but seeing how you guys behave in such a condescending manner towards your fellow gamers is embarrassing.

Ahhhhhh Blu-Ray.. :')

8GB is thankfully not a problem to me, although I can see a LOT of folks having to delete some games/save files to fit this on.

As if the 360 requires an entire extra disc just for install data.. that's nuts.  Reminds me of the olden days of gaming!  We'll be blowing cartridges next.
