Grand Slam Tennis 2 hits PS3, 360 in 2012

EA Sports tennis sim making long-delayed high-definition debut next year; game to support PlayStation Move controller.

by

EA Sports is offering gamers a second serving of Grand Slam Tennis. The company today announced that Grand Slam Tennis 2 is in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with an expected release in 2012.

Grand Slam Tennis takes the court again next year.

As the name suggests, Grand Slam Tennis 2 will feature all four of the sport's biggest championships: the French Open, the Australian Open, the U.S. Open, and Wimbledon, which will be exclusive to EA Sports' game. Grand Slam Tennis 2 will also feature more than 20 past and present pros, including John McEnroe (also exclusive to the series), Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova, and Serena and Venus Williams.

Building on that roster, the game will feature an ESPN Grand Slam Tournament Classics mode where players attempt to re-create 25 notable moments and storied matchups like Borg-McEnroe or Nadal-Federer. Grand Slam Tennis 2 will also feature a 10-year career mode for singles and doubles as well as online matches and EA Sports' Photo Game Face customization. In addition, the PS3 edition will support the motion-sensing Move peripheral.

While this will be the first appearance for the series on the Microsoft and Sony systems, its debut is long overdue. In 2009, EA Sports announced that the original Grand Slam Tennis would be released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 a few months after it surfaced on the Wii (where it accompanied the Wii Motion Plus launch alongside Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10). However, the Wii version of the game underperformed, the high-definition versions were delayed, and EA Sports went quiet on the series until today.

looks pretty decent. I'd get it on PS3 though I was hoping it could be released on PC as well so i could put it on my lappy and play tennis wherever i would've wanted.

Sweet, I liked the look of the Wii version when it was announced a couple+ years ago at E3 for the Wii. The career mode sounds interesting so chances are I may pick this one up.

@ FallenOneX, I feel the same way. But they somehow got Wimbledon squeezed in there, while Top Spin 4 couldn't. BTW, they'll have a hard time matching TS 4.

i remember this being on the wii and i was jealous the wii had it. heck, tennis is one of the only sports games i enjoy playing online and watching and trying to play in reality. i can not wait!

Just not the same as actually playing tennis....

It must suck for EA, not being able to pay off people for the rights to Pro tennis and golf they way they did for the NFL.

GST is the best tennis game on the Wii, they should bring out a sequel for the Wii too!

I don't enjoy watching or playing tennis. Maybe I'll like this.

Never played the Wii version, so we'll see how this one does. I still played Virtua Tennis and Top Spin tennis games. Don't know how this game will fair against those two giants.

Nobody wants to play tennis with a motion controller. Sure it works but after about 5 minutes your arm is tired and you're ready to trade the game back in.
