Gran Turismo 6 scorched by its predecessor in the UK

First-week sales of PlayStation 3 game make up less than one fifth of the week-one tally for 2010's Gran Turismo 5.

Gran Turismo 6 did not get off to a hot start in the United Kingdom last week. Data released by Gfk Chart-Track on Monday shows that first-week sales of the new PlayStation 3 game made up just one fifth of the week-one tally for Gran Turismo 5 in 2010. Specific unit sales were not divulged and information for other regions is unavailable.

Of course, shoppers in the UK and around the world may already have a PlayStation 4 or are considering the purchase of Sony's new system. This may have affected Gran Turismo 6's sales in a negative way.

What's more, Polyphony Digital founder Kazunori Yamauchi has said that Gran Turismo 7 for PS4 could launch in 2014, which may have also led to some buyer uncertainty surrounding Gran Turismo 6.

It should also be noted that Chart-Track's data does not include any sales of Gran Turismo 6 made through the PlayStation Network, as digital channels are not monitored.

The Gran Turismo series is not the only major franchise showing negative growth in the UK. According to past reports, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag week-one sales were 60 percent below Assassin's Creed III, while Battlefield 4 sales dropped 60 percent compared to 2011's Battlefield 3. In addition, FIFA 14 sales were down 24 percent over FIFA 13 in the region.

Gran Turismo seems like a perpetually mishandled property these days...

Its not only games. Coz of the economy crisis in UK, people are spending less altogether. So definitely game sales will get hit.

I think alot of people are holding out for a next gen version. If they do release a GT next year on PS4 it will just be an update of this one, so I don't know why they'd call it GT7.

Not surprised.. GT5 disappointed heavily... Plus given the release of the PS4 I doubt many would've bothered with GT6 on a PS3.. I'd be surprised if GT7 were to suffer a similar fate

Microtransections is killing game industry, get rid off them as possible and games sales will improve drastically, to be honest where I see mtransections I avoid even to look at that games doesnt matter how respectful franchise is

The addition of microtransactions is certainly being ignored in the article.  Which is a huge negative selling point.

Considering Gran Turismo 5 sold over 10 million copies, and this is a none multi platform game, and considering its just one week of sales in one country I can't read to much into this. Odds are GT 6 breaks 5 million sales no problem, and probably comes close to 10.

I think the expression "vote with your wallet" sums it up. Kaz has just ignored the major gripes the majority of people have with the series. Nobody cares if the stars are accurate yet he spent time on it. Nobody complained about the rendering of the premium cars, yet he spent time working on adaptive tessellation.

In the unlikely event of Kazunori Yamauchi reading this, here's some feedback:

The majority of people hate the premium/standard car separation. We want uniform quality (even if it means less cars) so get rid of them because it was a stupid idea.

Sort out the car sounds. If you are incapable of doing them right hire someone that can, and the same goes for the AI.

We don't need or want 50 (or whatever ridiculous number) Skylines. Sure I can understand a bias towards Japanese cars, but you are taking the piss.

People have been asking for years about custom paint jobs and liveries (personally I don't care, but many do). I'm not actually sure if it has been implemented for this game or not, but I assume it hasn't as I'd probably have heard about it by now.

Now for some less demanded and/or personal ones. The ability to explicitly set the FOV (SO important for any first person perspective game but particularly racing), as well as seat position/cockpit camera. Bring back the Top Gear test track, but this time give us at least one of the reasonably priced cars (WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!!). Make the steering wheels animations better (yes I know 900 degrees is difficult to animate but instead of linearly mapping to 180 make it 240/270 and have the first 180 degrees respond more rapidly than the remaining), either that or let us disable the visible wheel. And for the love of God put the BMW E30 in the game! I'm sure I could think of more but this is off the top of my head.

This isn't because GT5 was any good, but rather that it was so bad that nobody wanted GT6

I don't think the racing genre in general is in as high demand as it used to be,  and Gran Turismo certainly isn't the cornerstone it once was. That GPS tracking app. that was talked of recently certainly sounded interesting, but also very gimmicky. Polyphony need to step-up if they want to stay relevant.

Grenadeh

Is that any surprise? Most people don't even have GT5 yet.

I just didn't see any point in it. They were making a new game for a limited system when they could have done it for the PS4 and given it a good launch exclusive, which the PS4 doesn't have many of.

With it on PS3, and GT5 already pushing things, I didn't see how it could improve much on a technical level, and hell when looking for new features I just find a few small things and microtransactions. That doesn't justify a purchase for me.

Are we really surprised by this GT5 was a huge let down plagued with network, menu and patching issues. I should know I bought the first edition and then the XL edition months later. Also, next generation and Forza 5 was no help either.

xgalacticax

I'll still buy it cos I love GT. But people got burned on GT5, that's why. The UI was horrendous and slow. The online was heavily laggy, and most of the cars looked like they were taken out of Gran Turismo 2 on the PSOne. And they still have those 800 odd ugly cars in there in GT6!

That's what $ony gets for including microtransactions in Gran Turismo 6. People are voting with their wallets and are saying they won't stand for this crap. Hopefully $ony will patch Gran Turismo 6 and let people unlock in-game money or directly unlock cars via a cheat code like you were able to do back in the day before greedy corporations decided they could make you pay them to cheat and hopefully from now on, $ony will learn from this and not make the same mistake again.

I hope GT7 doesn't include 800 standard cars from gt4 and 400 premium cars with the sound of a vacuum cleaner.

I don't understand what's wrong with everyone. SERIOUSLY. you guys do nothing but whine about how terrible everything is. Noone can be happy in this world anymore. Look at GT1... then look at GT2. The difference between GT5 and 6 is exactly the same as GT1 and GT2. It's a damn cargame, what the hell do you expect them to do after releasing their 6th versioon of basically the same game?? "It's not polished" wth are you talking about?? The roads and backgrounds look way more beautiful, the road itself looks like real tarmac, the cars are beautiful, i nearly p*ssed myself when i saw the amount of cars to choose from in each showroom. (54 in subaru alone)... FIFTY FOUR cars in 1 showroom. The star system etc is WAY better than anything before it etc. There's never been a big change in GT since it's release.. so why are you all whining that there isn't one now? Honestly. The world is screwed.

People are hyped for the new consoles. They arent willing to buy games for last gen consoles as much. I knew releasing GT6 for the PS3 instead of waiting a little more and releasing it for the PS4 was a mistake

I wonder if this has anything to do with the implementation of microtransactions.

I'm beginning to think the majority of people here haven't played GT.

GT is known for being a game in which you had to grind. The platinum trophy for GT5 is over 300 hours worth of work. The microtransactions in this case alleviate that burden. They don't unlock anything for you that you can't already earn on your own.

tobougg
tobougg

I also read this somewhere else aswell. DO people on the internet now do NOTHING but write what other people already wrote?

tobougg
tobougg

wow did you come up with that all by yourself? it's the 25th time i've read this. have nothing original no?

dysonlu

As long as Forza fans try so hard to convince others that it is the case, it means it's not true, yet.

Poidad

@tobougg I've read this somewhere else! couldnt you come up with something on your own?

Grenadeh

@tobougg Except that 850 of those cars are imported PS1 and PS2 models and it's crap.

Horndawgie
Horndawgie

@Vatusus It's not that at all. There are plenty of PS4 and X1s on Craigslist selling for only $100 more than retail...and no one is buying. I saw some X1s and PS4s in stock yesterday, more X1s for sure. Don't believe the hype Gamestop and SOny and MS are throwing out there. It's because GT6 is really GT5.5. If you have the first one, really not worth getting the new one.

bubba_1988
bubba_1988

@Vatusus  Actually from a business standpoint releasing GT6 on PS3 made sense as the install base is ~80 million vs ~2.5 million PS4s. Too bad the game was not polished enough for people to care. I guess that was why there was no marketing, nothing really new to show off.

Carpetfluff
Carpetfluff

@RicanV I don't mind a grind if it's fun. GT had so much grind that was sooo dull they had to incorporate AI drivers you could leave driving around for you just to alleviate the boredom of doing it yourself. Besides, they clearly factored in the micro-transactions with this release...no choice of car at all at the start; not even a handful of slowies. Just one. For hours. Practically begging you to splash your cash for something better sooner.

xgalacticax
xgalacticax

@RicanV Or they can make it less of a grind and therefore a better game.

Horndawgie
Horndawgie

@RicanV No, people just don't care. They don't want ANY MTs in games, regardless if you can earn them by grinding. Get it? Regardless what you may think charging 20 mil credits-$190 U.S.- is highway robbery. Put it this way- would you admit to anyone that you actually paid $190 so you could unlock a Jaguar XJ13? Of course you wouldn't, because it's obscene.

warriors30
warriors30

When you say the platinum trophy is over 300 hours of work it almost sounds like they're forcing you to use MT. If I was really that desperate I would rather spend real money than 300 hours of my life just to get that stupid trophy.

Grinding stuff out is okay. But in this example, the balance isn't right...at all. Either pay $5 (I don't know their pricing model) or spend 300 hours of your time sounds almost criminal to me.

Unfortunately I have more important things to do than sit and read through all the other comments, but if making sarcastic replies helps you feel better about yourself go right ahead.

Grenadeh

@dysonlu It's not really a therefore, Forza is admittedly better than GT and has been since it came out. It's also newer than GT so they learned from their mistakes.

Carpetfluff

@bubba_1988 @Vatusus Exactly. That's why GTA V is on the 'last gen'. Difference being I guess that people wanted that one and it sold.

@RicanV Oh gawd,i am happy that i didnt started Star Ocean lol
Its still lying in the shelf among other RPG's...i think i will keep it only as a collectible :)

warriors30

Yeah I believe you. I have nothing against people who spend 1000 hours on a game they love. I just think it's problematic when trophies influence your gaming habits.

RicanV
RicanV moderator

@warriors30 I would understand a complaint from the guy who spent 1000 hours on his trophy over the complaints of people just complaining because the transactions are there. If you ask anyone here if they platinum trophied GT5 I would guarantee that everyone would say no and if they didn't want to put in the effort then, this model makes alot more sense for their group.
