Gran Turismo 6 - Review in Progress

I wanna go fast!

Gran Turismo 6 is nearly upon us, and I've been racing around classic tracks like High Speed Ring and new additions like Brands Hatch for a few days now. So far, I've been having a blast. But while I'd love to give you a full verdict on the game, GT6 has fallen pray to the dreaded day-one patch, meaning the multiplayer, online community features, and microtransaction features of the game aren't yet available, as well as other as-yet-unnamed tweaks. That said, I still want to give keen racers out there some idea of my experience so far with Polyphony Digital's latest simulation.

GT6 makes a highly polarizing first impression, offering excitement with one hand and taking it away again with the other. For the first time in a GT game, you're dropped into the action immediately with a single test lap at Brands Hatch in a swift Renault Clio RS to give you a feel for the handling. Unfortunately, this one lap is the most fun I had in the first 90 minutes.

Now Playing: Gran Turismo 6 - Review in Progress

No Caption Provided

After a positive start, GT6 immediately falls back into the series' bad habits by forcing you to drive the incredibly slow, incredibly dull Honda Fit for over an hour. You aren't given any choice over your first Career mode car, and credits are handed out dreadfully slowly at the beginning of the game. That means you can't afford to replace the Fit for some time, so you have to wait until the game gifts you a new car at the end of the first set of Career events--and when you are given the car, it's only a go-kart. This whole sequence leaves you crying out for better machinery and is only going to make newcomers to GT wonder what all the fuss is about when other racing games put you behind the wheel of a sports car within minutes.

Here's where I would talk about the touchy subject of microtransactions, but they aren't going to be enabled until launch. What I can say, though, is that while buying your way to the top certainly will be possible in GT6, at this stage it doesn't look like the ability to do so has had a detrimental effect on the way the the game works, nor are the microtransactions pushed upon you during play.

Once you're through the slog of the first 90 minutes, the credits and cars arrive much more quickly. Career mode also puts the new circuits up front, keeping returning GT fans entertained while repeating the usual pattern of having you drive slower cars to work your way up to pure racing machines. Silverstone, Goodwood Hill Climb, Bathurst, and Willow Springs are among the new real-world circuits, and there are a couple of returning fictional tracks from past Gran Turismo games that were absent from GT5. The sheer number of cars and tracks is one of the most impressive aspects of GT6. Polyphony Digital claims there are more than 1,200 cars and 100 track layouts, so there's plenty for drivers to dig into.

You can feel the body of your car roll as you change direction, making it natural and instinctive to correct tiny slides and massive oversteer moments.

No Caption Provided

Out on the track is where Gran Turismo excels. The handling model in GT6 is far and away the best, most detailed, and most engaging car simulation available on consoles. The suspension modeling is the most noticeable improvement. You can feel the body of your car roll as you change direction, making it natural and instinctive to correct tiny slides and massive oversteer moments, especially with a steering wheel. Stock road cars also feel much more lively now. In the past, they've been almost as stiff as the racing cars, but in GT6, you can sense much more movement through these less-high-end machines, especially when the nose dives forward under braking. You can also feel the limit of grip much more easily on standard street tires, meaning you can extract more performance than usual from some slower cars.

However, while the driving is executed beautifully, there are other areas of the GT6 experience that are pretty ugly. Gran Turismo has been around for a long time, but in all of those 15 years, it doesn't seem like the AI has ever improved. Computer-controlled cars still follow a rigid racing line that they are barely capable of deviating from. The AI shows little awareness of either you or the other AI cars, making most races play out like mobile obstacle courses with very little challenge.

No Caption Provided

There are some graphical problems as well. Wet weather looks really poor, particularly the effects of water hitting your windshield in the cockpit view. Environments look dated too, especially up close. Grandstands are full of cardboard fans, and some of the texture work leaves a lot to be desired, especially on trees and rock surfaces. Then there are the cars. For the most part, the car models are stunning, inside and out, but the distinction between premium and standard models is still an issue, and which cars fall into which category isn't clear.

No Caption Provided

GT6 no longer separates these cars in dealerships, and it doesn't distinctly label them. Though the developer has argued that there is no longer a visual difference between standard and premium cars, you can spend credits on a cool-looking ride only to get it on the track and discover that it looks jagged and blurry beside the other pristine machines. Many of the cars still sound like lawnmowers as well, but the day-one patch is supposedly going to sort this out.

Polyphony Digital seems to have carried on where it left off in Gran Turismo 5 and produced a sequel that's a natural progression of all things Gran Turismo, rather than a great reinvention of the franchise. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there are parts of the game that are sorely in need of a makeover, things that a day-one patch is unlikely to solve. Look out for my full review of GT6 once I've spent some more time on the track and burnt some rubber online.

- No livery editor

- Abysmal standard models

- Limited customization (generic wheels, but with different colors)

- No choice of first car (Honda Fit RS '10)

- No track generator on disc

- Dumb A.I.

- Rabbit chasing

- Only rolling starts, no standing starts

- No damage in single player

- No mechanical failures

- A spec and career mode bland and dull

- Pointless economy

- No sense of progression (buy upgrades, rince repeat)

- no hood view (only a weird roof view)

- Awful sounds

- too easy to overcome opponents

- Career mode too short

- Etc

But still, mark my words; Gamespot will praise the game despite being a revamped GT5.

As an older guy, I'm only slightly above mediocre, at racing, but I still have fun doing it. What I really love to do is spend hours in the livery editor creating designs and selling them to the community to make a little extra cash. This helps make up for the cash I lose out on for not racing as well as the teenagers.

I spend so much time making designs, decals, etc and totally customizing the cars to look awesome!

This is why the Forza franchise, with the livery editor, will always be a winner for me. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget to buy two game systems, and Forza is just not reason enough to get me to purchase an entirely new game system. I went with a PS4. I won't be getting any version of GT, because it just doesn't have what makes it fun for me.

Maybe someday Microsoft Game Studios will allow it to be made for a Playstation.

Yeah, I won't hold my breath.

Hmmmm - not feeling the love for this so far and yeah, I agree, nothing really significant here to make me wanna rush out and get this as an absolute must buy.

I'm guessing this is just for die hard petrol heads but I've kinda moved away from this type of game nowadays.

It will be really interesting to see what kind of sales figures this will pull in though.

This game is more like gt5.5. They changed the ui and improved physics and add some tracks everything else is the same. Still standard and premium cars same crappy tuning opitions and car customizing plus paint chips and then there's the 20 different car models of the same car. Polyphony Digital seem to dislike change even if it's for the better of the game I'm sorry but forza 5 kills this game in every way. I love the drifting in the game but even that is flawed when it comes to the scoring. Racing in the game is so fake come one no qualifying and you always start in last place but you can still win. One of my favorite things they had from the last game was the mercedes challenges on nurburgring and I was hoping that they would expand this for all tracks with different cars in gt6. What they have instead is fuel challenge and electric car power challenge do a lap with very little fuel or power = boring. This content is not for everyone and should of been cut out for other regions. Very disappointing game that lives in the past hopefully gt7 will see the future.

Grid 2 is free with PS Plus. Unless you're a hardcore GT fan people are most likely gonna play Grid 2 and forget about GT6.

So, if consumers end up feeling the same way about the game as reviewers seem to (that it still carries too many lingering series issues), what does PD need to do for GT7 to get back on track?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Realize that quality is more important than quantity, ditch standard cars completely and rebuild them from the ground up, even if they have to outsource some of the rendering jobs. Turn 10 did it, so can Polyphony Digital. Add in proper damage modeling, and for the love of all things holy, fix the audio. Gran Turismo's audio sounds like it was recorded in 1997 and never updated.

I don't like the microtransaction bs anymore than anyone else, but the fact that most people are "I want that new shiny object NOW!" drones, is part of the problem.

Once publishers saw that people were actually willing to pay for crap that should have been included as part of a video game, by calling it DLC, it was all over. I view the content in THIS game as simple icing on the cake. I don't NEED it to enjoy the game as is. I pretend it doesn't exist, as there are so many other cars already available.

Eventually i'll have enough credits to get these cars, but I don't obsess over having them. I could live without them. If other people simply STOPPED purchasing this garbage, publishers would see that consumers are NOT willing to be ripped off.

We used to get so much more for our money, but now it's just common business practice to try and fleece customers with trinkets that aren't that important. Don't complain if you can't control yourself and are willing to contribute to this crap by supporting it with your hard earned dollars.

When was this period of "used to" when getting more for our money? Was it paying full price for an NES game that lasts an hour from start to finish, whilst this game is more or less the same price considering inflation and all of that, and its got 1,200 cars and 100 track layouts? I don't buy that argument. Sure, some games out there are pretty bad in terms of value, but I don't think there's ever been a time where we're getting more content for our money than these last couple of years... depending on which games you play of course.

It's amazing how gamers have suddenly become such drooling crybabies. Gran Turismo 3 did not have microtransactions and it was a huge grind to progress in the game. GT6 looks to be the same way, yet the whiners are saying that it's grindy only to steer players towards microtransactions to get ahead faster.

You don't have to pay for them if you don't want to. Devote some time to get ahead if you want, just like the "old days". Stop the whining already.

Or, you know, they could fix the game's economy to remove the grind without steering people towards microtransactions. Leaving the grind in and saying "Hey, you can always just pay us some real money if you don't want to grind!" is not a good alternative.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I work 40-50 hours a week, work out five to six days a week, and I cook all my meals. After all of this, I'm lucky to get a couple hours a week (excluding Saturdays--that's my binge day when I'm in town) to play video games. I love games like this, but have stopped buying them because they've switched over to the microtransaction model instead of innovating the gameplay to appeal to people like me. I live the grind, I'm not trying to do it again during my free time.

Agreed. People bitched about grinding in GT5 and now that there is an alternative to avoid grinding, they're bitching about that too. I'm glad that they're essential charging people for being lazy. It's your own fault.

You're thinking of the wrong GPS thing. There is a GPS thing that records telemetry from your car, and there's an App for your phone that records GPS data as you drive and turns it into a track in game.
