Gran Turismo 5: What's New in Update 2.0?

New NASCAR autos and more steering wheel views are featured in the free Gran Turismo 5 2.0 update.

Polyphony Digital has recently released a sizable update for its 2010 driving sim extraordinaire Gran Turismo 5, which weighs in at a hefty 1,192MB. The version 2.0 update costs absolutely nothing and comes packed with a whole load of tweaks, improvements, and additional content. For a more detailed list, keep reading or alternatively check out our new features video below for a look at some of the more significant changes.

The major features in the 2.0 update include:

Cockpit Views for All Standard Cars

The game contains more than 800 standard vehicles and now, thanks to the update, you can race them from behind the steering wheel.

More Nascar

The update adds an additional 11 NASCAR 2011 vehicles to the game for fans of US stock car racing.

Weather Change Menu

The weather settings are now adjustable from the quick menu on certain tracks, letting you tweak the degree of changeability, surface water, and more.

Avatar Available in Photo Travel

Lonely cars are now a thing of the past in Photo Travel thanks to the 2.0 update. A press of the triangle button adds your avatar to the scene.

New Intro Movie

Along with changes to the game itself, the update also includes access to a new intro movie obtainable through the Gran Turismo TV option at the main menu. Take a look below.

Among the further features in this update are:

• Improved car physics simulation

• Logitech G25/G27 steering wheel support

• Shortened load times

• Improvements to the online lounge

• New "Indy: NASCAR Pit Stop" stage in photo travel

• Fast-forward and rewind functions added to all replays recorded after 2.0 update

It's too bad the AI is still horrendous. Seriously, for all of the effort they put in, the AI is the absolute worst AI I have ever seen in the current decade for racing games. It's really sad. Not everyone wants to play online and frankly, when you have to level yourself up so far racing the computer I'm amazed that people don't care about it more.

@grognard GT5 has 200 fully modeled, photo realistic cars in it. The best looking in any racing game.

@Gelugon_baat So you're telling us we can't criticize Gamespot now!? False information is false information no matter how you color it. And I actually have nothing against Gamespot, except for (a part of) this video (and a few minor things). That's why I still hang around. They post news, I read them. They make a review, I watch it. Just because I like Gamespot doesn't mean I must ignore when they make a mistake. And of course Gamespot made this video, it's so obvious. Sony can't make a video with a Gamespot watermark and the same composition as other gamespot videos without breaking copyright laws. Even if said video is for Gamespot exclusively.

@Jarek_Cyphus even if gt5 have 1000+ cars and forza4 500 cars. I prefer a lot more getting a new car in forza compare to gt5. A lot of cars in gt5 that I did not like and after playing forza, I felt in love with those same cars. Then amount of premium cars in gt5 is way more boring than forza. And btw, I'm a huge fan of both games! I have built two playseat with two wheels to be able to play each game without having to switch the steering over and over again.

@Gelugon_baat My biggest gripe with the video is showing false information on standard car cockpit view. They showed a premium car cockpit view, which has 100x more detail. Then people buy the game because of that and flood the forums with stupid questions. @teteringen Both features are in the game as of this patch. @grognard Instead of 100 full detail cars, why not 200+ and some extra less detailed ones. *facepalm* at your logic.

This game will always be the top racer around.Gran Turismo is what made me like racers in first place.

@Jarek_Cyphus - you're definition of a good racer is how many cars it has? Quality over quantity. I'd rather have 100 cars I want to drive and that are fully modeled, rather than 700 additional cars that took the art assets from a 7 year old game that I'd never want to drive anyway.

Beside the cockpit view for all cars, the 2 biggest improvements are lacking. 1. The ability to suspend an endurance race. As no man on earth has actually done 24hrs of LeMans all by himself, it is a total mystery why the real driving simulator expected us to keep driving for 24hrs straight. 2. Bonus money and experience if you log on consecutive times. Both features help save our Planet as we do not have to keep or PS3 running for days, either pausing an A-spec 24hrs endurance or letting B-spec Bob do 24hrs Lemans for 10 times in a row with nobody actually watching or babysitting him.

though forza looks sooo much better and it was a while waiting for gt its nice to see some usable and welcomed dlc, hopefully it may reinterest me in a game i so enjoyed but was left a little deflated when it arrived.

@DrunkinPeasant: Not sure if serious... if you are, then I don't know how anyone else can take you serious. You're probably a Forza 4 fan who assumes your game is bug/issue-free, aren't you? As a consumer on this update, I can say Polyphony Digital delivered on their promise. While I also like Forza 4, I'm still waiting on THAT game to have 800 cars. I rest my case.

What I want to know is why the 3 or 4 best tracks, are all on GT PSP, and not on GT 5. Especially the one, I dont remember the name, but you literally drive through a village that on the coast and a hillside, great track. IMO this game should include all the tracks that have been plus new ones, instead of throwing some out and adding some in.

Shortened load times, thats a lie. i found it takes longer to start a race. have to wait for each car to load then i can click start. dashboard view is a joke. i wish they put a bonnet camera view 'not to roof camera' like what other acing games do...

maybe you should review 2.01 instead. cause you know, the 2.0 patch was nothing but problems. Also, why did it take 2 weeks to post this? Old news if you ask me. way to go gamespot!

djmiranda15

Epic fail, Gamspot. You should've spent more resources in actually making a decent 2.0 showcase video. The cockpit view of standard cars is nothing but a black mesh, some dials and a pair of hands rotating when cornering. And you also forgot to mention the "save during endurance races" feature and "DLC support". Anyways it's really nice to see the dedication of PD to it's fans. We actually get free stuff and vast improvements to existing features.

MJ12-Conspiracy
MJ12-Conspiracy

GT5 should have launched with these features..... Now I may actually buy the game, the one feature I wanted was cockpit view for all cars. I drive a heck of a lot better from behind the wheel, for some reason I can judge a corner better and I have better senses when behind the wheel, I can also focus on driving.... In third person I get distracted by the scenery and other vehicles, corners all look wider or narrower than they really are and the view just feels unnatural.
