Chafee joins Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O'Malley in the race for the nomination.

The 62-year-old former Senator most recently served one term as governor of Rhode Island. Last fall, he chosen not to seek re-election.

Chafee opposed the controversial $75 million loan that brought 38 Studios from Massachusetts to Rhode Island in 2010.

In October 2013, following the collapse of 38 Studios, Chafee was accused of forcing the developer into bankruptcy. 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling, the former Boston Red Sox pitcher, called Chafee a "dunce of epic proportions" regarding his handling of the ensuing 38 Studios fallout.

If elected president, Chafee says he would have the United States adopt the metric system.
