God of War: Ascension director leaves Sony

Todd Papy departs Sony Santa Monica, moves to Germany, teases "I haven't quit games."

by

God of War: Ascension director Todd Papy has left Sony Santa Monica, the industry veteran announced on Twitter today.

"Yesterday was my last day @SonySantaMonica. I'm extremely honored to have been part of that team. <3 you SSM!," he said. "Time for the next adventure!!"

Papy was also design director on God of War III. He assured fans that his departure from Sony does not mean the company will suffer.

"There's a huge amount of talent from the old guard. They've added a ton of new talent & continue to do so," he said.

In a follow-up tweet, Papy said he decided to move to Germany to "experience a different culture & all the wonderful things that Europe has to offer."

Asked if he was leaving game development altogether, Papy replied, "I haven't quit games ;)"

Some notable Germany-based developers include Crytek, Deep Silver, and Yager.

God of War II director Cory Barlog returned to Sony Santa Monica in August. He is currently hiring an Ocean's 11-style cast of developers to work on a "freaking huge" game.

They need to killed GoW franchise and start a new one. I'm glad they are working on a new IP. I look forward to that.

The word on the street is, he's been picked up by MS to make Xb1 exclusives.:)

that's a shame, so real talent being lost here, gow3 and ascension were both amazing

this is sad because as a designer his work was impeccable particularly in GOW 3 and ASCENSION and as a director he did a fine job in ASCENSION which had the must refined combat mechanics & most beautiful visual in the entire series.

How did I miss the news about Barlog going back to Santa Monica? Whatever they're working on can only be awesome.

As for Papy leaving? Meh. I know he's had a lot to contribute to the previous games, but Ascension is probably my least favourite of the lot.

which series has better boss fights GoW or Souls?

Ascension was a major step backwards for the series.  The first three games were among the best exclusives on the PS2 and PS3.  Ascension had a crap story and was full of audio bugs.

GOW3 was the best in the series IMHO.

Ascension is ok, not as great as the "3" one, the new elemental weapons is cool but I missed the weapons and play style diversity in GOW3. Also the 30fps on Ascension is disappointed comparing to the its predecessor which was running at 60fps most of the time. Having high fps offers huge advantages in gameplay of this genre.

Maybe it was cuz i had just beaten GOW 1 when i tried the GOW: Ascension demo, but...everything seemed way too...simple, the boss during the demo was really easy (i literally beat it without losing a single bar of health on my second or third try). That simplicity turned me off of buying the game..that and multiplayer in GOW....IT JUST ISNT RIGHT! lol

GOW is the best hack and slash around. I love playing GOW games. they're as wicked as they come and also a true game, a game that can be unforgiving. Hope to see one again.

I think I just seen this guy in an Art Institutes commercial

I wish him the best of luck in whatever he does next. Personally I felt that Ascension was pretty weak overall but more because I think it was an unneeded game in the first place rather than the execution being off.

Bring the series back to what made 1 and 2 great.3 was a disappointment for me, too many quick time events. The first hour of the game was nothing but quick time events.

I can't really fault him for the move to Germany. Of all the countries I have lived in, including my native USA, Germany remains my personal favorite.

Isn't it ironic that all 3 major directors for God of War left?

I say Ascension has the best mechanics, feel and gameplay. Feels less of a button-masher compared to previous titles.

I liked Ascension, all the places we visit and ball-busting difficulty, according to some people. It wasn't as good as 3 (my personal best), but to me, it was better than first (no Ares cheapness or maincart BS).

Great addition to the great series.

@blackace I'm all for the new IP, but killing GoW?? With that way of thinking Nintendo would be dead, you don't kill your Star franchises, you might give them a break, give them a twist, but death is not an option.

Define "better". God of was way easier, that's for sure. The Man Eaters haunt me to this day.

@zhunter2807 It does? It is expected from this genre to hit 60 FPS, but it doesn't offer that much.

komuchen

@kidflash2000 wait, wait wait... GoW1 was hard? This game was hard only when you got to Ares cheapness (and pushing the box while enemies attack, while it takes you backwards). The most "balanced" game was 2nd. The 3rd had that cerberus with satires bullshit. And Ascension... it gets hard when you get to 2-3 elephants owning your ass with other atrocities.

I actually thought Acsention was fantastic. What you wanted form a GOW game, over the top mayhem with great and created puzzles and scenery. Really challenging as well, even on normal mode. Awesome game.

Clearly he doesn't give a shit about your opinion.
And I agree with him... well, close enough. I still think GOW1 is the best, but Ascension was better than the others.

@snacky_smorez satisfaction when we defeat a boss and the adrenaline rush while fighting the boss,my friend is like GoW has the best boss fights while i think souls and vanquish have better fights

@komuchen @zhunter2807 GOW3 mostly runs at 60fps all the time, ofc there are hiccups now and there, maintaining 60 fps while offering awesome graphics, MSAA is not a simply task. I think Santa Monica pushed the PS3 to its limit with GOW3 while still provided smooth gameplay to players. But I don't find it as mooth as GOW3 when playing Ascension.

@Ripper_TV

I think Ascention is one of those games none PS gamers like to imagine was terrible but actual was great. Give GOW 3 and Ascention a try. You will love it.

Souls hands down then. Souls makes you really earn it. You really feel like you accomplished something. God of war is fun though but those boss fights can't compare. Just my opinion.

komuchen

@zhunter2807 @komuchen it's not as smooth as 3 not because of framerate alone, but also because of changed mechanics. Here, they expect you to go full DMC/NG, even though GoW was never even considered to be that dynamic. In 3, enemies were slow most of the time, so you could block or evade without problem, also there were not that many enemies, here you are just bombrushed by them it's crazy sometimes. That's why it feels not as smooth. And I know it will come as a shock to you, but GoW 3 was never 60 FPS in gameplay, it was mostly 30-40 FPS (50-60 cutscenes, QTE). It felt more fluid because it wasn't dropping below 30, unlike Ascension, which sometimes felt like dropping to 26 frames.

Also, camera - it wasn't as far away as in this one, sometimes you can't even see what you are doing. I'm still impressed by the graphics in 3rd and Ascension though.
