Ghost Recon mini-movie being made by directors of Oscar-winning short

Ubisoft taps two of three Logorama filmmakers to make $8-$10 million, 20-minute prequel for this holiday season's Future Soldier.

Game-to-film adaptations have a notoriously spotty track record, with efforts ranging from the appallingly dreadful (Alone in the Dark, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) to the merely inoffensive (Resident Evil, Tomb Raider). With any luck, that spectrum will be growing broader in the future, as cinematic adaptations are receiving bigger budgets and more decorated talent behind the camera. The former point is embodied by this summer's Prince of Persia movie, while the latter is confirmed by another Ubisoft effort, this one for an upcoming Ghost Recon project.

Sir, I'm ready for my close up, sir!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ubisoft has enlisted the directors Francois Alaux and Herve de Crecy to handle a 20-minute prequel to this holiday season's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The live-action short will boast a budget in the $8 million to $10 million range, with one of the writers of Children of Men, Tim Sexton, penning the story around a US Special Forces team. Alaux and de Crecy were two of three directors who worked on Logorama, which won the Academy Award for Short Film (Animated) on Sunday.

This isn't the first time Ubisoft has employed such tactics to promote a new game. In July of 2008, the publisher purchased Montreal-based Hybride Technologies, the special effects studio behind the hit film 300, for projects like the Ghost Recon short film. The studio's work for Ubisoft was on full display in last year's Assassin's Creed - Lineage, a three-part live-action short film that helped market Assassin's Creed II.

Only 20 minutes? I was hoping for feature length ever since I saw that live action trailer...

Unable to say anything. Why they make a live action trailer why don't they make the high graphic animated trailer like prince of persia 2008 has. I really like the sound of that and graphics. AMAZING But overall it will be a great game going to be

@ jamyskis, totally agree. Its a waste, if the game is good people will buy it whether it has a flashy mini-film or not. Personally, I'd rather have better games.

From the looks of the trailer, NEIL BLOMKAMP would have utterly perfected that. It's raw, but doesn't seem raw enough.

The live-action trailer is already on youtube as of today, similar to the Halo 3 live-action short films.

Funny how a company bleating on about losing millions to piracy can afford to waste $10 million on a pointless marketing campaign.

Could be cool, could be terrible. Perceptions come heavily into play with film....also, for gaming!

Hmm- 8 to 10 million for a GR short film?? Is this game really that good to warrant that? I don't think this will help sales. I could see that for A list title, but not this. Oh, well not my money.

Let's hear it for Ronald McDonald and the corporate logos for the big win! Nothing could be more American than fattening, disgusting food and senseless violence in the streets of Capitalismland. Oh, and let's hope Micheal Bay doesn't elbow his way in on this project...don't want to end up as another statistic.

@MR_Manikin52 I agree, the first two or three GRs were great, but GRAW broke my heart.

After dealing with the testicle suckage of Operation Flashpoint: DR, I really think Ghost Recon will regain the hearts of fans of tactical shooters.

The Bad Company series would make an EPIC short. This looks potentially winsome.

Its actually not a bad budget for a 20 minute movie. I thought the Assassins Creed shorts were very well made so i'm confident this will too.

Hopefully it'll be as cool as the Halo short turned out.

Assassins Creed Lineage short films, I thought, were absolutely amazing. The colors, the camera shots everything was just gorgeous! Maybe it was b/c I still have a lot of AC2 hype left in me? Idk, but I have a lot of confidence in these short films Ubisoft has been making lately. They're free for us (for now?) and add so much girth to an already meaty game.

I loved Ghost recon. I had all the 1st generation ones & Got both Advanced Warfighter Versions as well. BUT if its got that DRM crapola on it they can shove it up their Arse. I'm not going Online to ask for permission EVERY TIME to play a game I just Paid for.Thats just bloody insulting.

This should be pretty sick. I thought both the Halo: ODST and AC2 live shorts were very well done. Hopefully this keeps the (admittedly short) streak going!

Cool, video game shorts do well half the time (unlike movies).

Movies based on war games is no different than any other war movie. Even that movie based on Call of Duty is very unnecessary.

Interesting, but I'm not sure why Ubisoft thinks these little live action things are good ways to spend their money. That Assassin's Creed thing wasn't that great, and I doubt it inflated their sales numbers for the game noticeably at all. Seems like a waist of keesh.
