Ghost Recon: Future Soldier beta begins April 19

Test run of new shooter's multiplayer mode runs until May 2, open to PS Plus subscribers, some preorders, and Xbox 360 Splinter Cell Conviction owners.

More than two years ago, gamers who bought the Xbox 360 version of Splinter Cell Conviction were promised entry to the beta period of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Ubisoft is finally ready to make good on that promise, as the publisher today announced that the Future Soldier beta will run from April 19 through May 2 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

After multiple delays, this Future Soldier is almost ready for the present.

Those who don't have a copy of Splinter Cell Conviction handy will still be able to participate either by preordering the Xbox 360 version of Future Soldier from GameStop or subscribing to PlayStation Plus. The beta will feature matches on two maps, in two different modes, and for up to 12 players. It will also give players the chance to try out the game's three classes to see which suits their preferred play style.

Beyond the beta, Ubisoft detailed the Ghost Recon Network, a new service for mobile devices and Web browsers that will let players tinker with the game while on the go. The service will let players customize weapons and share them with the community, view heatmaps of levels, track leaderboard performance of themselves and their friends, and earn unlocks for Future Soldier. Ubisoft said the Ghost Recon Network "will support all Ghost Recon titles moving forward."

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is set for a May 22 release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a PC release following on June 12. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Got a say not impressed. Played about 7 hours worth and the game started to drag. Bullet detection is a shocker. Movement is average, and there are so many exploits even on two maps is going to be so easy to take advantage. Was so looking forward to this after enjoying the past games but this game feels so dated.

Played the Beta yesterday and this morning. It has potential if all the bugs were fixed and the quick match system was reliable. Other than that I love the customization possabilities and the movement system. Can't wait for the full game!

I hope this game doesn't turn out like Duke 'waiting forever to arrive' Nukem forever. I bet the delay was due to ubisoft dropping their nuts when BF3 and MW3 were released. They probably thought 'oh crap we need to re-assess the situation'.

YES FINAALLLY! This game is looking so good, I can't wait to play the Beta. The Beta is right after my birthday too! Ubisoft, you have my preorder. Hopefully this will keep me happy while I wait for Rainbow Six Patriots.

So only Gamestop pre-orders get beta access? Ubisoft, why give Amazon pre-order customers the shaft? Our money counts too.

Talk about coincidence... I just fired up Conviction earlier today and played three quarters of it in one sitting on the 360. I also am a PS-Plus member, so I'll see which version I like better. I just hope they don't try to make it like Call of Duty like EA did with Battlefield and Medal of Honor.

I know almost nothing about this game, but I've been greatly looking forward to it based on the first two.

I've bought and played all of the ghost recon games ever released. It'd be nice to beta this one as well, but sadly I couldn't really get into the splinter cell series and I only own an xbox 360. I'm really disappointed that they don't have 4 player split-screen co-op like they did on every other console ghost recon that I can think of. That's a huge blow to the amount of replay this new game will get from my household and friends. We spent dozens of nights if not more playing 4 player split-screen ghost recon games. Even the girlfriends/wives enjoyed playing with us. It was a great social gaming time. It's sad that the couch-friendly console is going away so quickly even when the capabilities are increasing.

Yes. I am so hyped for this game. I bought Splinter Cell Conviction; however I want to play the beta on the Playstation 3. I guess I will get Playstation Plus; so I can play it. Plus Gamestop finally has a good preorder deal for Ghost Recon despite how I don't like Gamestop. Your game will automatically be updated to the Limited Edition version for the regular retail price. It includes two extra maps and weapons, so I will preorder. I haven't preordered a game in years. LOL!
