Generation of Chaos for the PS2 is the latest chapter in Idea Factory's Spectral series. The series, consisting of the Spectral Force trilogy, Spectral Blade, and Sand of Enblaze, is the company's flagship series. The series makes the jump from the PlayStation to the PS2 with Generation of Chaos. The game engine has been revamped and features a mix of simulation-strategy and RPG elements, but the cast of characters from the series hasn't changed.

The game takes place on the continent of Neverland, which has thrived harmoniously for eons under three gods: the holy god Chorea, the evil god Janis, and the god of wisdom and adventure, Epsilon. Then a great war starts when a human hero, Siphon, defeats the evil god Janis. Led by Simba, the kingdom of Muromachi ends the great war in the year 1012. It renames itself the Simba empire and rules the entire continent. Eventually a civil war breaks out when several factions struggle to become the new ruler. The orcs of the holy land Neogaud begin invading the neighboring lands of Totusberg because they see no benefit in being under the rule of the Simba empire. GOC will begin its story in the year 1030, when Neverland is about to enter into a new era.

GOC centers on a half-orc named Rozé, a young female warrior born from human and orc parents who both died when she was 14 years old. She and her younger sister lived peacefully until one day her sister was killed by humans. Since then Rozé has a grudge against the human race. Although she is generally kindhearted, she must decide whether seeking revenge is the true answer. Supporting characters from the previous Spectral game will be making an appearance as supporting characters in this game as well.

The game is divided into two sections: simulation-strategy and RPG. The simulation-strategy part takes place in real time and involves building castles and fortresses, acquiring generals and troops, and sending the troops to gain new territories. In the RPG section, your party will venture into dungeons , where you can gain new items and weapons, meet new characters to join your party, and most importantly, take part in key events related to the main plot.

The battle in the RPG part is quite similar to the system used in tri-Ace's Valkyrie Profile (published by Enix). The game takes place in real time, and a battle gauge, representing the health of the character, appears at the top of the screen beside each character. Each of the four buttons - O,X, square, and triangle - on the controller represents the four characters in your party, and the buttons on the D-pad are assigned to the enemy monsters you intend to attack. Pressing a button allows for a normal attack, while holding it and executing a special command triggers a charged attack. Other attacks include a combination attack involving two characters attacking at once

Generation of Chaos for the PlayStation2 is scheduled for a release sometime in 2001 in Japan. No publisher has picked up the rights for a North American or European release.
