Gears of War movie development jammed

Epic Games' big-screen adaptation reportedly sees budget slashed, scope reined in, and director possibly jumping ship in favor of a different flick.

by

The film adaptation for Microsoft's iconic first-person shooter Halo had a lot of things going for it: a big fan base, a big budget, and some big names attached. Unfortunately, that didn't save the project from winding up in development hell. Now there's concern that the same fate awaits the film adaptation of another Microsoft sci-fi shooter franchise, Gear of War.

"Not quite ready for my close-up, Mr. Wiseman."

The Los Angeles Times reported last night that the project has suffered a number of setbacks lately. In addition to budget cuts and a scaling back of the story, the paper said the departure of director Len Wiseman is now likely.

Originally connected to the Gears film adaptation in 2008, Wiseman is instead now focusing on the postapocalyptic thriller Nocturne, the paper reported. Besides being married to actress Kate Beckinsale, Wiseman is best known for directing the Underworld action horror films and the fourth Die Hard film, Live Free or Die Hard.

Previously, New Line Cinema had expected the Gears of War film to tell an epic story, with an appropriately epic budget of more than $100 million. However, the paper said both have been scaled back considerably, with New Line "turning it into a more simple, straight-ahead invasion story instead of a sprawling epic." The film's producers are now looking for a new writer to take on that challenge.

While Gears fans will likely have to wait some time for a feature film, good news on the game front could be fast approaching. Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski is appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this Thursday in order to unveil his next project.

How about they actually keep the person who had the original idea for the series in loop with production? And how about they give screenings to fans (almost like game testers)? Maybe with some decent input they might actually make a decent movie...

well the game didnt have a very epic storyline so im not surprised the movie wont either

@Charocks Lol, I'd cry if he got signed to it :P. That guy wouldn't know quality if it hit him the face. But odds are the movie will end up sucking anyways because they'll probably end up doing some cheesy rodeo run cam crap mid way in, or they'll ignore a majority of the game story it's self.

this would be a much better movie if the writers of the original game had some more details fleshed out during GoW 1 and 2. I don't know how GoW 3 is going to end, but I doubt they can really answer any plot holes and will probably let them remain as plot holes.

A budget cut was what the movie needed. The first movie in a game franchise should be smaller and more character focused to introduce non-gamers to the characters and world that gamers already love. Obviously creating a new world requires a decent budget, but a good director could pull it in for under $100 million. This isn't like Bioshock where they had one of the most visually adept directors around and a game built around the look and feel of the world and gutted the budget. The success of a Gears movie hinges much more on the script. Just look at District 9. Great script, talented but new (inexpensive) director and solid acting by a cast of unknowns and the movie made a ton of money and got an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

that's lame. these kinds of cut backs (story and budget) are a big part of why game movies usually suck

Game-to-movies, are horrible, just look at the Hitman movie.

Let's just get Uwe Boll on this and be done with it! Let's make it as far from the story as possible, make the Locust alien zombies, toss chainsaws for jackhammers, and make the Kryll fluffy flesh eating bunnies!

@Katra Yeah, the first MK movie was pretty good, but it wasn't what i'd call... deeply intellectual. It's that they kept on making a 2nd and third with the same old hacknied premise...

@Marky360 it may suck.. or they just know it wont be a movie for the masses and just sell it on dvd.. cause not many video games transfer well to movie world, cause none can compare to "the super mario brothers" movie.. no old person will go "hmm.. its like the video game, i should watch this and be more hip around my grand kids.." it will be a bunch of nerds that want to see it.

I'm sorry but I honestly don't see the purpose of movies of games anymore. Current video games far outstrip many Hollywood movies for their quality of acting, visuals and storylines.

Im pretty sure the new prince of persia movie has a pretty big budget of 100$ millillion, and that's including all the big stars they have in it and the poducer who did POTC movies. This Prince of persia movie is gonna be the first Video game to movie, that actually does it right. Resident evil, doom, streetfighter, DOA, and the list goes on, the problem with those movies is the studio didn't fork out enough money and intrest into the product to make it worth while. A gears of War movie is possible, if given the budget and attention it needs to be good. Sooner Hollywood stop treating these video game to movie fims like a cheap straight to DVD movie, and more like a summer blockbuster. Then maby we can get good films. Im gonna see Prince of Persia for sure, yeah im not really into the games, but i know i good movie when i see one.

i mentioned halo would make a billion , you do know i meant worldwide, and that number is far from unreasonable, alice in wonderland made 700 million plus recently, clash of the titans is on pace for that, iron man 2 will probably make that , New moon made close to 800 million, HP 6 made almost a billion; you really dont know anything about movies if you think a halo movie would not come close to that mark; not to mention it would probably be in 3d tickets will be around 20 dollars, and halo will attract a lot more viewers than just the fanbase of the game

The FF7 Films were alright but i dont think GoW will work... I'll stick to the game. Would rather watch the same montage 20x over than a film

I really liked the last Die Hard....not sure if I've seen any other movies by that director.

Movies based on video games . . . . just not a good idea.

I couldn't be happier about this. The director already ruined the Die Hard franchise so it is better keeping him away from adding his "touch" to this franchise.

Oh thank god! I love GoW too much to watch it be turned into a crappy movie.

Halo, Metal Gear Solid, World of Warcraft and now Gears of War. Maybe not turning them into films is a good thing although I would watch them if they were made just to see the transition from game to film.

Quick someone go find Uwe Boll...another fantastic opportunity for him to make a horrible movie.

And this is why we can't have nice things. All the potential is there, but studios decide to under-produce and settle on marginal cheesy movies that will turn a slight profit. What a shame! All it takes is one GOOD movie to be made from a video game franchise and the studios will stepping over one another to pick up properties left and right. Same thing happened with comic-book movies.

hope this new version does not see the light... because all of the fans would prefer to see static instead

this game movie adaptions never really live up to the games so am not really looking forward to any of them gears/halo or what ever but if they do make em lets just hope they dont disappoint because i really hate to see my favorite games/characters in bad light or just plain going down the drain

Those movie studio heads don't know anything. They're going to miss out on a lot of money just like they did by canceling Halo movie in time for the game.

@Khatjal I actually thought the first Mortal Kombat movie was pretty entertaining.

What happen to the bioshock, infamous, uncharted movies?

Good. I doubt they will be able to do this game right in a movie.

But if they did they would have to make it a epic shoot out combat movie with very little acting scenes. Kinda like the third Lord of the Rings movies.

Hey, as long as it doesn't end up as useless as "Mortal Kombat" or "Super Mario Brothers", I can wait...

@The-Techspert: If I sounded harsh it could be owing to disappointment at the trend of turning everything into a movie. What next, TETRIS - THE MOVIE? Gears is an amazing game and borrowed friend's X360 just to play it, but as you said, there is nothing in it that says "epic movie". MGS, Zelda... yes, they definitely got right ingredients for a great movie.

Hopefully they can find a better director. Having those movies under his belt isn't exactly a good thing.....

A Gears movie could be good, I doubt it will be though. The only decent Game-to-Movie adaption I can think of is Silent Hill
