Gears of War: Judgment pirates facing 'vigorous action'

Latest gamehits torrent sites more than a month ahead of release; Microsoft banning accounts and consoles for those caught with copy.

by

Gears of War: Judgment has leaked to torrent sites more than a month ahead of its March 19 release and Microsoft has promised "vigorous action" against those who download illegal copies.

"We are aware of isolated cases in which Gears of War: Judgment content has been propped on the web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation immediately," a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamert.

"Consumers should be aware that piracy is illegal and we take vigorous action against illegal activity related to our products and services."

A similar situation took place ahead of Halo 4's launch in November. At the time, Microsoft said those caught playing illegal copies of 343 Industries' new shooter would potentially face a lifetime Xbox Live ban. With Gears of War: Judgement, the situation is much the same.

"Playing pirated copies of games, such as Gears of War: Judgment, is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use and will result in enforcement action, such as account and console bans," the statement reads.

Gears of War: Judgment is due out exclusively on Xbox 360 March 19, 2013 and is the first entry in the series since 2011's trilogy-capping Gears of War 3.

Developed by Epic Games in conjunction with Bulletstorm studio People Can Fly, the project focuses on series soldier Damon Baird and will not use the Kinect.

Blah, blah, blah. While I am not a fan of pirating, I know several people happily playing this game online right now, and they will continue to do so after they are "banned". The pirates always win unfortunately.

Ever since the fall 2012 update you xbox is always online even if you sign in with a non live gamertag. Don't believe me? Sign out of your live gamertag and sing in with a non live one then notice the adds still flooding your dashboard. So unless you have a phat 360 or a hardwired slim they can always check up on you. Let the ban wave begin :)

Normally, pirates.are smart enough to not go online when they're playing a pirated version of a game. Those must be the really really dumb ones.

Microsoft dumb fuk devs.

Good for them.  They abandoned the PC market because of this issue, and it's happening more on consoles.

I hope they burn.

Oh hey, PC isn't the only platform that gets pirated.

Who'd a thought?

I am against the DRM "feature", online passes and other piracy countermeasures because I like  complete games and to have their ownership, but besides that, they sure have to make money from their business, don't they ? Don't we love games ? Once that is true I am sure we have to support the companies that produce them and  PAY for their work, infrastructure, the thousands of professionals that work hard to deliver amazing games to us.  That is just fair, It is ridiculous  even just mention it.  How would you feel if you had a  job, worked your a** off the whole month and were  not paid ? Cannot pay $60,00  for the game that have just released ? Well, you just have to wait until the price drop or sales or pick older games , there are tons of games at discount that delivery as much thrill and fun as the latest ones.

Reaon for pirating?. 60 bucks, Pay for Xbox Live for online Play and more Worthless DLC you have to pay for..

This is inevitable, people are waking up for realising they get ripped off.

MS better change their gaming structure in online and retail, or its going to cost them.

But nah, im not a pirate, i just buy the games when it becomes cheaper..

Do these corporate people (and for that matter some of the commenters here) even realize how HUGE the market for piracy is on the Console market at this point in their life cycle? Its become so easy and commonplace that these threats are like pissing into wind blowing it back into your face you look stupid and no ones scared.

No they won't be playing it with Xbox live these people have not been using your overpriced internet service for a long time now MS and they won't start now they will be playing their pirated copy of GoW on a modded Xbox offline like they always do or even with a Xbox emulator on their PC.

I'm not condoning it but this kind of lame response is pathetic from a corporation and shows how out of touch they are that they think this will do squat and at most all they'll do is use this as an excuse to shove some more hassle DRM in for the people who do purchase the games legally.

It wouldn't surprise me if those pirates game mainly on the PC, and then pirate on XBOX 360 for exclusives only. Pirates will always be pirates.

I've played it. I'm very disappointed and I'd like a refund. Not of my money - which I did not spend, but of the bandwidth I wasted playing it. Bandwidth and time...

Microsoft has also promised that tomorrow they will take vigorous action to prevent the tide from coming in.

They'll have the same success as with this.

I see multiple persons theorizing that Microsoft purposely released this 'bootleg' version (I refuse to call it 'piracy' due to conflation with, you know, _actual pirates_, who still roam the world's oceans)  under false colors as a 'marketing aid'... that to me seems silly because if evidence proving such ever surfaced, all actions they take against people who circulate and/or play it become legally null and void (I think the term used is 'entrapment').  xhawk27's suggestion of deliberately releasing a poisoned version also would never be approved by anyone sane: the blowback would not be in the least desirable.

Lastly, I don't recall the following question answered anywhere; perhaps someone more enlightened could share knowledge on the matter: individual A buys a second-hand console; what recourse does he or she have when it is discovered to be blacklisted because of its previous owner's activities, which were _not_ disclosed in any way, shape, or form in the course of the transfer?

@ArataWata Everybody. The only difference is between the 10% on consoles and the 60% on PC in some cases.

@Zoza24 Not to mention the chatter about next gen consoles having DRM installed in it, and thus not allowing to trade your used games. Only speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if its true.

@Unholy123 So, uh, what non-pathetic response would you suggest?  They could give a long diatribe on how pirating has all but killed the PC game market and drives up costs.  They could explain how it forces software makers to introduce new, more expensive and intrusive ways of protecting thier IP.  They could tell them all to fly to Redmond and volunteer for a hand slapping session.

They can't ignore it, there are literally millions of dollars involved.  They can't appeal to the honesty of thieves, it's even sounds stupid and it's what pirate gamers are.  Since they can't get back the lost sales from the !@#$%^ that did this they'll take it from us honest folks; so we can pay even higher prices for thier internet services, lose the option of buying used games and enjoy another price hike on new software... oh yeah and more  drm like you mentioned.  THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH!

@Mr_BillGates thats retarded , i know A hell of a lot more people with xboxes who pirate games  than PC gamers  Infact PC gamers have a lot les reasons to pirate games as they dont have to pay for internet (you know the thing that is free! everywhere els) and the games are a lot cheaper too.

type any game title in to a torrent search these days and xbox and ps3 game releases dominate the list.

Seems you just cant handle the truth that you preconceptions about  pirates only being on PC  are wrong.

@FarQall Yup u are right with that one. I wonder why they even bother threatening people, when is so easy to play the game with mod Xboxes and plain simple just unplug the internect and u ready to go. What they should be doing is not been retarted with their stuff, and allowing this games to leaked like that especially online. The whole world will have the game now, a month before release.

@Ryozo I've had a similar attitude towards the "pirate" label  I 've always felt that a person that receives a good second hand shouldn't be penalized. I feel it's the entertainment industry of trying to make folks feel like criminals. I do understand the issues behind it and don't myself take part in it but still...

pal_080
pal_080

@Ryozo Buying a blacklisted Xbox fall into the category of "buyer beware!".  Hell don't buy any electronics unless it's from a trusted course.  But don't they just blacklist the account... not the actual system?  Or do they blacklist the actual serial number since the system has been "modded"..?  At any rate I don't think there's any way you would know what your buying... so again, BEWARE!

Warlord_Irochi

@jorge69696 For the same reasong you try to start a pointless flame about an opinion that doesn't affect you in any way, maybe?

pal_080
pal_080

@Ryozo  I really doubt many seriously think MS leaked this on purpose.  What sounds more likely is an individual (or a group) involved in the copying and distribution channels got their grubby fingers on a copy.  Seems like it would be more worthwhile to find that person and punish them, rather than those who are receiving the copy that person initially released.

Speaking of the Witcher, the series sold 5 million units, yet only 600,000 were sold on the 360.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/witcher-series-sales-hit-5-million-6403502

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=witcher

And also in that article you linked, most piracy is in 3rd world countries, countries I doubt are actually of any market viability to any publisher, so it's a moot point, with or without piracy most of them would not have bought the game.

Also, if piracy is so rampant, then why do most publishers bother with the PC in the first place? why was Far Cry 3 even released on PC? or any of the current or past titles? why does the PC have the most titles out all the platforms? why are all these veteran developers going to Kickstarter in order to develop games on PC instead of consoles? Because PC sells.

And at the same time STEAM is seeing a 300% growth.
