Gears of War Judgment creative director leaves studio

Adrian Chmielarz and two artists depart People Can Fly; Epic Games confirms total acquisition of Polish developer for undisclosed sum.

Development on next year's Gears of War Judgment will continue without its creative director. A statement provided to Kotaku today confirms that People Can Fly co-owner and creative director Adrian Chmielarz has quit the Warsaw, Poland, studio, alongside senior artists Andrezj Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki.

Gears of War Judgment will be judged without its creative director.

"Adrian Chmielarz, Andrezj Poznanski, and Michal Kosieradzki have parted ways with People Can Fly and Epic Games in order to pursue other opportunities, which they will announce of their own accord," Epic Games president Mike Capps said.

Chmielarz's departure from Epic Games comes the week after director of production Rod Fergusson announced he had left the Gears of War house. Fergusson has joined Boston area BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games, where he now serves as executive vice president of development.

It was also revealed today that Epic Games now wholly owns People Can Fly. Speaking to Joystiq, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein explained that it formerly held a controlling stake in the company, but not the entire outfit. It was not mentioned how much Epic Games spent to acquire the remaining stake in People Can Fly, and the company declined to comment.

They should have made another Bulletstorm, that game was Epic. :) GOW, meh, the newest one sucks.

They need to cancel Judgement already and make some more DLC for Gears 3.

Epic will rule the world, this is but one small step to total global saturation.

Gow 1 & 2 were very good. But the third franchise was already weak.6 hours of gameplay and a horrible ending of the TRILOGY.This game for me is just a attempt for Epic to milk their customers like Ubisoft does with AC (though even using the same engine since 2006, the games are well thought and done)

People may Fly are making GeoW 3.5, and talent is leaving. I'm not paying $60 unless this game is AAA, and I have a feeling it's going to be good AA style, but not great AAA Epic style.

Someone needs to wedge the revolving door at EPIC...

I guess they hate Epic?  Wonder if they will make their own company?  "People use to fly".

Gears 1 was refreshing...now its a rehash after rehash so I don't see where the creativity is in EPIC

huh, GoW didn't strike me as a franchise that had staffers with "Creative" in their job titles.

Well, I am done with the GOW franchise. They are taking out the only modes I enjoyed (beast and horde) and making it even MORE competitive based. I am not competitive nor do I like competitive gaming. Too much immaturity and egomaniacs for me.

will I ever see the day when another GoW hits PC platform ?

The reason that Adrian Chmielarz and co left People Can Fly is because Epic Games has bought the studio. Epic already owned a majority share in the company, something it secured back in 2007. Now it has the lot.

"We doubled down on People Can Fly," Epic's Mark Rein told Polygon. "It was something we always hoped to do."

The decision to buy out the company led to the departure of Chmielarz, Poznanski and Kosieradzk. The group's departure was amiable though, reckons Rein. "We will be helping (Chmielarz) with some future announcements," he said. "Our paths will be crossing again."

And those 6 hours of clunky, dull, railroaded gameplay were some of the most monotonous hours I have ever spent playing a video game. And those grating attempts at story telling were just frustratingly painful.
