Gears of War assembling Meccano toys

Erector sets based on Epic Games' third-person shooter series reportedly due for August launch.

Some construction toy tie-ins--like the recent partnership between Lego and Minecraft--are no-brainers. Others are a bit more of a stretch. One such example of thinking outside the toy box came to light today, as UK-based gadget site Pocket-Lint is reporting that Meccano, known in the US for its Erector brand--is working on a series of Gears of War construction sets.

Pocket-Lint snapped a pic of a Gears-themed Meccano display.

Expected to launch in August, the first line of Meccano Gears of War offerings will feature vehicles from the third-person shooter trilogy. The initial wave of kits, which are still in Epic Games' approval process, include the Armadillo, Centaur Tank, and King Raven helicopter. A large-scale diorama is also planned, though the report had no additional details about what that would consist of or when it would be released.

Gears of War 3 wrapped up the franchise's original trilogy last September. The Xbox 360 exclusive sold through more than 3 million copies in its first week, and it pushed the series' lifetime sales over the $1 billion mark.

I would normally agree with the "eh" comments.. but after seeing how much my son and his friends love GOW action figures, etc. they will freak out to hear this good news. Thank you!

So, 360 users are gonna play with construction sets while they wait for a game to come out? Hope there's a lot of construction sets...

I could see Mcfarlane toys doing a set, but a lego-esqu thing with Gears? Not really seeing Gears in this context.

Considering Microsoft's deal to have Mega Bloks make halo sets, I would have thought Gears of War would be done by Mega Bloks.

Hey, I think I get it! They're making a neat product that you can purchase if you're interested in it, and if you're not, you don't have to purchase it and can pretend it doesn't exist. So, obviously, the reason people are getting angry is because gllrrrrble! Bllplbdbdbd...gllrx!

Uh, well okay. Not sure if GS should be reporting about this but whatever.

Why are people making a big deal about this? Halo had toys.. I see them all the time. In any case, kids aren't the only ones who buy toys related to adult games ;x

Wow, have all the "gamers" on gamespot never noticed that EVERY SINGLE POPULAR M-RATED GAME HAS TOYS? and the IT HAS BEEN THAT WAY FOR YEARS? - I remember being 8, and buying the terminator 2 toys, and even then wondering why they made toys for r rated movies lol - But good on you turning this into a "microsoft sucks/epic games sucks/gears sucks" thread... pure awesomeness.

Halo lego sets are still the best ones.

Gears is worthless to me without a PC version. Next news article please!

This is the same as having GTA Lego kits. Might as well have an ambulance kit made to run over blocky prostitutes and market that to kids too. Also, I'm sorry, but Meccano isn't Lego. Meccano is to Lego as MegaBlocks (or whatever they were called) are to Lego. Cheap ripoffs that fall apart. Take note: Next up is Dead Space bedding sets. "Honey, why are you scared of bed time? Oh, right. It's the sheets I bought you."

Funny how folks are quick to defend that these games are mature and for mature audiences while its being merchandised towards kids. To make it worse Epic would be signing off on this solidifying the fact that their game is catering to a younger than stated crowd.

Isn't this a mature game? Why would people who play with toys also play a mature game?
