Gears of War and God of War sales suffering in the US, says analyst

Judgment and Ascension are estimated to have significantly failed to match the sales of their predecessors.

Microsoft and Sony first-party blockbusters Gears of War: Judgment and God of War: Ascension have both suffered from disappointing first-month sales in North America, according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz.

In an investor note released ahead of the official NPD data this week (via GamesIndustry), the firm estimated first-month sales of Gears of War: Judgement to be around 420,000 units, less than a quarter of the two million Gears of War 3 managed in September 2011.

Sony's God of War: Ascension is estimated to have shifted 360,000 units, compared to predecessor God of War 3's 1.1 million.

High-profile third-party titles performed better, with Creutz estimating that BioShock Infinite sold 665,000 copies in the US after ten days on sale. Tomb Raider is also estimated to have shipped 696,000 units after 33 days of sale, although publisher Square Enix has said that the game did not meet its worldwide sales expectations.

The analyst firm expected overall sales trends to have improved in March 2013, but now believes the NPD group will announce that US software sales have fallen 21 percent year-on-year.

The NPD group will announce its official market data on Thursday.

The problem with Gears is that the studios looked at this as fresh start because it is a prequel. However, the fans of Gears view this as the 4th game. These studios need to learn from 343. They came out and just said it's Halo 4 and built on what previous games did instead of creating their new version of the game with stripped down features missing from previous games. If a game studio is removing the characters you can select, the number of maps and modes in a game, then they are probably going in the wrong direction.

People complain about enough is enough and no need for prequel and title in those series ... Plz tell that to square Enix to stop making final fantasy series .. fans will always want a god of war title and instead of new IP Santa Monica can start a new story line instead of prequel .. but Kratos must not die .. he is a symbol we always want to play one of his stories ..

I haven't played either of these games but I think a major problem is, like many of you said, these games were not needed.  We had already had one God of War prequel and no one cared for another, especially since after God of War 3 people were finished with the series because either they didn't like it or they felt 3's ending was good enough to not need anymore games.  I don't think anyone cared for a Gears prequel either because story has never been the main thing for Gears and Judgement basically seems like a Gears of War game without Marcus.  Both these games seem to lack the major thing to make people want to buy them.  We already know about Kratoses past so Ascension didn't come off as anything special and as I said before story isn't the main point in Gears of War so you are basically paying $60 for another Gears game with no Marcus.

Good, because they were obviously soulless rehashes

As great as the games in these franchises were, enough is enough.  They need to create new IP's, and keep franchises to maximum - trilogy.  God of War has 4 core titles and some spin-offs.  Now, I know Sony Santa Monica has the talent to make a new IP work for them.

Good. I'm glad that gamers are finally starting to reject rehashed crap that publishers see as easy money. I bought both Gears of War 3 and God of War 3 and thought THEN that both franchises had passed their prime and needed a long break. But what do publishers do best? They play out good franchises to the point where gamers actually start to dislike the series because it's so over done. This is the case with both Judgement and Ascension. Neither games should have been made and been shelved when the trilogy ended, especially when the previous titles failed to breath new life into the franchises.  Note to publishers: there is such a thing of Too Much Of A Good Thing when it comes to repetitious games bringing down the entire franchise.

I think people is getting tired of the same crap year after year, the trend remind me of what happened in 1977, the game market crashed thanks to a wave of crappy games looking to make some quick cash, until they eventually weaken the market so much people just stopped buying.

Although the situation is somewhat better these days with a slew of indie games and smaller developers make new IPs, mobile games to broaden the player base. So I do not believe the market will crash again anytime soon, but the big publishers that make the same carbon copy of the same game (basically) year after year will start to lose money, miss sale figures, see higher developmental cost. As the fans start yearning for innovation, or just something new and fresh.

There hasn't been any innovation with the some of the big AAA titles since their first fray into the market, like every Call of Duty after Modern Warfare 1, every Assassin's Creed after the first, all the God of War is basically the same, the list goes on. There is some bells and whistles every year sure, but the core game play remind unchanged.

Maybe what happened to Atari needs to happen to all the publishers, maybe they need to go bankrupt in order to see the light, and just maybe, it will be a good thing for the gaming community.

As a god of war fan I ignored the latest game. Due to the fact I am still butthurt that I paid 60 friggin dollars for GOW3 and how it was over in under 5 hours on the hard difficulty :/ Should have waited till it entered the $20 price range :c

And gears I skipped due to it being on a 360. Which I don't support a 2 year lifespan of a console :/ Making multi-platform titles might be a good idea.....

Maybe exclusivity deals aren't working out well for the studios involved. Look at how many more multi-platforms make the charts every year: Fifa, Crysis, Tomb Raider, Black Ops. I think a larger potential userbase generally equals a lot more sales

I think part of the problem is due to the names of these games, people hear them and the sound like more of an expansion pack or a spinoff than a true sequel, it's a similar problem to the Wii U.

I actually think if the games swapped consoles they would both make a killing, i think xbox fanboys would really love a GoW like game and playstation fanboys would really love a Gears like games, its all about fatigue am tired of shooters on my X360 and i could real do with a GoW game

So swap consoles and change the game and character names and we all good

I guess they need to something to spice up these games. Same thing goes around.

We should get a game

where you shoots (Rocket missiles) Arms at hybrid (Cat wolf) that stock (cyber golden Kit kats) in their brains. Add some RPG and looting elements to it. It's weird yes but at least it something new and we haven't seen before.

Of course they're suffering, the gears of war series has been running for what 7-8 years on the same console on the same hardware. It was finished before gears of war 2 came out. The problem is simple, stupidity prevails when it comes to creating sequels and prequels. Take call of duty and assassins creed for example. The last title in the AC series that was actually worthy of gamers cash was the second. As far as cod goes, the improvements on modern warfare have been slack because the target audience for that series is anything between 10 and 18, which is the easiest age bracket to please. What happened to game companies bringing and IP's? Now a days we see more remakes than new projects which is sad. Bungie has taken a step in the right direction, so has Quantic Dream. I just hope the rest of the big names like ubisoft, square enix and treyarch can do the same.

I don't know about the rest of the intellectuals that lurk, but I for one need a change.

how many times can one sell the same game before even the dumbest kid realizes that it is getting tricked by marketing into playing with a turd painted like something fresh and nourishing. develop something new, put a little effort into it and you will see how your sales figures will start skyrocketing again.

Fourth (if i'm not mistaken) both in two series that has gone past their prime, ofc people won't be that keen to pick up either of them.

Quit making the same old, same old. That is the exact reason I passed on the new God of War. The first one on PS2 absolutely blew me away, and to me, that was it's peak because there hasn't been any changes significant enough to hook me. 3 was good, but not good enough for 2 playthroughs. My opinion, though.

Swap the games over - Gears of God - Aliens Attack Greece and Kratos runs and guns with a 2 machine guns attached to the end of chains. He can shoot around corners and do bullet hell combos.

God of Gears - The Greek Gods attack Earth and (insert character name here - I don't have a 360) flys a pegasus and smashes things with a machine gun on the end of a chain. Why take cover when you can throw the gun to the enemy behind cover and shoot them from behind.

still not sure why its down by that much.....i guess god of war is barely going to make a mil sales this time around. not sure if the meta score is affecting judgement though

I know I didn't care to buy either one of them, which sucks because both are series' that I've really enjoyed in the past. I'm more interested in what's going on  with games like Dark Souls II and The Witcher 3. I'm at a point now were I want open-world action... Almost exclusively. Neither GoW titles have this.

toby_hussein

Gears Of War 3 had a pretty dull campaign mode and the story was a bit "meh" so I am not blindly purchasing another Gears title before it hits the budget rack. Besides Tomb Raider, Bioshock, Fuse and even ACM looks more interesting.

These two didn't wow me into my Must Buy Games Now list.  The ones that did were coincidentally Bioshock and Tomb Raider.

They take out the most popular aspect of  Gears multiplayer i.e. Horde Mode and wonder why sales are down?????

maybe it's because they sucked compared to the old ones?

Stop being surprised by games that aren't as good as their predecessors don't sell as well. Gears (even though I did really enjoy it) feels more like a large expansion than a whole new game and God of War is flat out not as good as the previous entries in the series. Personally I would blame the demo for God of War, underwhelmed was how best to describe my impression when playing that.

Thank you fellow gamers for possibly forcing them to be more innovative rather than rest on sequels!

Now if you'll only stop buying the annual CoD / sports titles, we can revolutionize the industry!

Endless remakes, sequels, and prequels don't make as much money? I'm shocked. Perhaps they should try being creative for once.

we all know that the quality of these 2 prequels are the lowest among the franchise. take halo: reach, a good prequel with good sales.

Looks like I wasn't delusional after all toast man lol! I wasn't the only person that sent it back to the mail box lmao!!  Mail Man Take It Away and may it rot on the shelf forever!!  But on a serious note, this should have been added as a DLC to Gears 3 and probably was before greed took over.  Serves them right I had a season pass to that game and fall came much earlier than expected!

yamilvirginio

people are simply tired of so many sequels and games that play exactly the same. I mean  how many Shooters and third person shooters can you make before people get tired. The industry needs more variety. Genres like horror survival, puzzle, action car games like twisted metal and adveture games like zelda are no were to be found. People are just tired of COD, Gears of war and all of those crappy games.

It could be franchise burnout or it could be that so many quality titles shipped at the early part of this year. This was almost like a holiday season, but at the beginning of the year instead of the end.

@toddx77 we had two god of war prequels and they both where on the psp and both rocked. after 3 it felt like the series had ended. i guess we need a break from this series before they release another one. i plan on gettingt this new one but not for another year or so

soheil_nassri

@yamilvirginio Exactly, even same enemies look at Gears of War every year same enemies. They say Horror genre won't sale much and then they convert games like Dead Space and Resident Evil to more action and it is funny they fail and then they start saying we should make it even more action I think they are just st*pid and I think this is because there are no talents anymore and maybe decline of Japanese game industries caused it.

LastD

I agree, and with a constant flow of DLC for every title we purchase. I feel like Gamers are being dripped dry of any extra funds they might have used to purchase a new game. I also have a limited amount of time to play a lot of these games and that forces me to be much more selective. With new and innovative titles like bioshock and tomb raider, who has 120 bucks to drop on cash in attempts while there are better quality options available.

raziel2kain

@david60639 in which time period? 6 months after release? or 2 years when the price get cut?

sephaien

@soheil_nassri @yamilvirginio exactly. Survival Horror has been abandoned for too long. Only Dead Space series met all the expectations but that's it. I'm not talking about indies btw. Big budgeted games need to have some variety.

@LastD I completely understand the feeling of not having enough time and having to be selective. Completely understand.
