Gears of War 3 falls under RAAM's Shadow December 13

Story-based DLC follows Zeta Squad evacuation of Ilima City in campaign set before original Gears of War; $15 add-on features new multiplayer characters, lets gamers play as General RAAM.

Gears of War 3 may have been billed as the conclusion to the Xbox 360 trilogy's storyline, but Microsoft and Epic Games aren't done telling stories in its sci-fi shooter universe just yet. The pair today announced that RAAM's Shadow, a downloadable content package featuring additional campaign mode gameplay, will launch on December 13 for 1,200 Microsoft points ($15).

Who wouldn't want to be this guy? He's got it all: Power, good looks, a Kryll shield…

Billed as the biggest downloadable content package Epic Games has ever made, RAAM's Shadow is set before the events of the original Gears of War and places players in the boots of Zeta Squad as it tries to evacuate the human settlement of Ilima City in advance of a Locust Kryll storm. Fans familiar with the extended franchise will recognize Zeta leader Michael Barrick from the Gears of War comic adaptation, as well as squad members Lt. Minh Young Kim from the first game and Tai Kaliso from the first sequel. The add-on will also let gamers play as Locust boss General RAAM himself and offer another 250 achievement points to earn. Multiplayer-minded Gears fans may still be interested in the package, as it will also include six new characters for the game's multiplayer modes and the Chocolate Weapon Set.

RAAM's Shadow is the second of four add-on packs planned for Gears of War 3. The first, the Horde Command Pack, is set for release November 1 and includes three new maps, three new playable characters, and new fortification upgrades for the game's Horde mode. The Horde Command Pack costs 800 Microsoft points ($10) on its own. Gamers can also purchase the Gears of War 3 Season Pass for 2,400 Microsoft points ($30) on Xbox Live. The pass includes access to all four of the planned add-ons as soon as they are released. If purchased separately, those packs would cost players 3,600 Microsoft points ($45).

Gears of War 3 was released worldwide on September 20 and sold more than 3 million units during its first week. For more on Epic Games' third-person shooter, check out GameSpot's review of Gears of War 3.

Hey @mdk236, The comment about "stupid" was Not from me.

mdk236
mdk236

@professorXzaver I have my own gripes about the DLC, as it seems to want to ignore the campaign's plot holes, but to call people stupid for spending their own money how they see fit based on your biased opinion on this matter is wrong. Don't do us any favor by "protecting us" from ourselves, the government doing this is why our economy is the way it is.

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

@professorXzaver Because it's stupid people who blindly obey any price in America (Like your showing) that are the reason the economy IS the way it IS. Would you pay $10 for an apple? No? Why, answer me why? Then justify this DLC more.

professorXzaver
professorXzaver

@dxBIGBOSSxb why do you care how other people spend their own money.

@The_GooBear This DLC is just crap, unnecessary, unrewarding crap. It's the most expensive of the bunch and it's the sole reason people will buy the pass otherwise it's useless. It comes with pre-made skins, ONE gun skin, and a mini campaign. If that sounds like a deal to you, then fine, but clearly someone failed economics class (No offense) because this "realistic price" could be considered criminal in other cultures. Again, I have respect for your claim but this DLC is simply unjustifiable. If they just got rid of the pass, included everything here (Which they could have) to the main game from the start, and just realeased the other DLC there would be no problem, but nope, they just gotta look for that ONE sucker to buy into this, and OHHHH people will you believe me.

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

@The_GooBear You still don't get it. 1. The Shivering Isle DLC was 30$, that's true, but it gave you 40+ hours of content! Triple that of Gears' campigns alone as just an expansion. So the 30$ is justified there. 2. Yes they did push back the release date, but it was already finished to begin with. It was polished, and it was heavily tested, packaged and ready to go. There was nothing missing, they were just gonna hold out, but Microsoft is notorious for not launching games during, or after Tax time, that way they don't have to wait for their money and they increased the deadline. 3. This is a scam because for 30$ you get 4 DLC, that's fine, but why is it a deal? Because they make trash DLC like this look SO expensive that buying the pass SOUNDS like a better deal when really this DLC is worth 5$ at best. I never said you couldn't get the pass to begin with, I said people who bought used copies who don't already have the pass, as in "not yet". Again it's another ploy to either buy the pass, or pay WAY more money than you should. Also I never stated ALL the DLC was bad, if you actually read that part, I just have a major gripe with THIS DLC, because all it took was one 15$ DLC to start the CoD trend and make a bunch of 15 tags, and these guys are testing you to start it with Gears.

The_GooBear

The price is as fair as DLC goes. You do NOT have to pruchase the game new to buy the season pass. Download it off of XBLM for $30 and all upcoming DLC will already be paid for. It's nothing like a CoD DLC scam. On the time of release of the DLC packs they will automatically be downloaded to your HDD (meaning you don't have to go into XBLM and find it). People are really having a hard time understanding the way the pass works and I just wanted to clarify. When they say 33% off all DLC they don't mean at the time of release. $30 and it's all paid for. And they are not going to be $15 apiece so please don't compare this to CoD. It says right above that it will be 3,600 MS points for all content if the Pass wasn't puchased. That's $11.25. Not much different than Halo's DLC pricing and I didn't notice anybody complaining about that.

The_GooBear
The_GooBear

@ dxBIGBO$$xb The DLC came out so soon because Microsoft pushed Gears of War 3 back towards the holidays to meet Sony's competition. The game's original release was due in March and the game had already been finished by then. Since they've had it finished by March, Epic had time to polish up the game modes like Beast and also gave them time to work on the upcoming DLC so the content has been in works for a while now. As for price, I think $30 is a great deal for all of the content. BTW Shivering Isles was $30 all on its own on release so four packs vs. one

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

@neilcottee You can't keep falling for this, I don't want you guys to turn into the CoD community buying anything with a 15$ tag on it and expecting a Shivering Isles amount of content. You probably don't care but I'm just trying to look out for you guys. Your a COMMUNITY. Get them to make a reasonable bundle pack like the 40$ Gear 1 and 2 pack that came with all the DLC. You CAN convince them, but you can't buy into this garbage to start out with. Peace :P

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

@neilcottee Basically they're pulling what I call a "Community over Dollars scam" or a CoD. Basically they get the community fired up thinking it's about the game, not the money, and everyone supports it. They're basically going "Hey kids, were letting you play as General RAAM, isn't that cool? 'Yeaaaaah!' O.k, just 15$". Also this idea of playing as RAAM is not new, you could play him in Multiplayer with all the noises and animations you'd expect. Again I ask, WHY are people so impressed by this? But so people think I'm not raging on DLC period for this game, I think the Horde commander pack is pretty cool. New maps, new defenses, and a bunch of other stuff and for a reasonable price, 10$. THIS is an inexcusable waste of time. A, most likely, very short mini campaign, some character skins, and one gun skin for 15$, pffft! I'm not kidding when I say only a complete sucker would buy into this thinking it's just a necessary piece of the game you must have. I'll admit I'm not even a fan of Gears, I played the first 2 and didn't like them, but really like the 3rd, but I always held a respect for the community. They deserved more for their game and I was happy if my friends enjoyed it. But guys I'm trying to warn you is all.

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

@neilcottee Again, I respect your claim like other people's but I must interject. 1. Refraising my old comment, If it had so much content then WHY are people trading it in, in mass? It seems awfully convenient this DLC is coming out when people are buying used copies and NOT having the pass. 2. Yes they're a company and they need to make money, but this game sold better than Red Dead! Not to be bias and heavily comparative, but RDR had three 10 dollar DLC. One was about 8-10 hours of an additional campaign with new weapons, skins, and modes. The other two where... meh, I'll admit should have just been included, but they gave new challenges, weapons, TONS of skins, New game modes, new titles, achievements and ALOT more. How much? 30$ total. THAT is reasonable, plus there is the free DLC that just came out to thank the community. They also released the 20$ bundle pack :O. Like I said before THIS particular DLC is a complete scam, especially since it gives you far, FAR less than most other DLCs and it costs $15? Really? This is considered acceptable? 3. I do like your car example and it does make sense, but cars come already with the necessities required. This isn't like buying a car and not having a sunroof, this is like buying a car and realizing the guy who sold it to you smashed the dang radio and makes you pay for a new one a few months after you bought it. Is that fair? Is withholding items and passing them off as DLC BARELY a few months later fair?

COLDFIRE25
COLDFIRE25

@Alex_09 So lets all buy $60 games, beat them and toss them to the side. DLC adds more to games; multiplayer maps, story mode, achievements ect. You dont have to buy them, others enjoy playing them.

neilcottee

@dxBIGBOSSxb I think the package that is Gears 3 is really quite a good deal, considering some of the sh*t that I have bought over the last year. The campaign is amazing, Horde 2.0 and Beast mode offer much replayability and the multiplayer is awesome too. I think for the price of the game you get an incredible amount of content. With the DLC, so what! They are a company and this is a business. Why should Epic give away stuff for free? Even if it was ready to go before shipping the main game, that makes no difference. They want to sell it, and people who want it will buy it. If you don't want to then that's your choice. No one is forcing you to do anything. It's like buying a car and then moaning that extra's like electric windows, sunroofs and air con are not installed. Yeah they're available before purchasing, but the manufacturer charges extra for these features. This is just the same business sense that most companies use. You want more stuff you have to pay for it. Why should the gaming industry be any different? Why do you feel that they owe you something for free? Granted, some games do rip people off DLC wise with content that was clearly held back from the main game. But I cannot say that I felt the Gears 3 content feels short lived or lacking. In fact I think the Gears 3 content is probabaly one of the best all round packages of gaming goodness to come out for a long while!

@Alex_09 Class-based games are a different story. Obviously, in a tactical shooter there is a need for a variety of skills and the games are balanced around that. But historically, there is a negative stigma to the hide and snipe method in run-and-gun type games. (It also harder to pull off in games now as it is easier to pin down the sniper's location.) Anyway, my point was that is far worse with a weapon that doesn't even have to be aimed.

Alex_09
Alex_09

@deathstream Sniper rifle camping? Isn't that exactly what you're supposed to do with a sniper? I think it's unfair to expect someone with a long range, high powered rifle with a slow fire rate to be on the front lines. I know games aren't realistic but still aren't classes meant to offer variety in gameplay.

Alex_09

@COLDFIRE25 Why are you defending people who want to take your money and give you barely anything in return? I like Gears of War, hell I like games period, but DLC is milking no matter the cost.

More Gears campaign gameplay is always welcome. I don't like the Versus multiplayer in Gears 3 much, but the campaign was fantastic. I'll buy the RAAM's Shadow pack.

@RogueSonic From reading epic's forums the Queen's origin was not explained in the least in the books, or how the horde came to be. Epic left too many holes in the story and too much unexplained. They hinted on some origin of the Horde in Gears 2 that was supposed to be extrapolated on (or one would think) in Gears 3, but they never touched it. Such a waste, but I digress. Maybe they will in some way in future DLCs, I would like to see these questions answered in game form rather than in a novel or comic. Comic and novels based on or sequel/go betweens for games are just developer laziness wrapped in a marketing ploy.

@dxBIGBOSSxb I agree that stuff like this should have been in the game. MAYBE it wasnt ready to be put into the final product, MAYBE. But even if it was 400ms points people would still complain that its to much and that they would try anything to get a buck from us gamers. CoD does have the worst DLC even, with remade maps and their $60 DLC disc 'games'.

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

@Javier @Duke_Nuk3m @feleas You guys do seem nice, and don't worry I have respect for your claims, but this is just... lazy in so many ways. I don't care if this is Gears, I remember when people got pissed at Oblivion because of the Horse armor, and now this, THIS is what people are buying into. You guys need to understand THIS DLC is absolutely unnecessary because what will it accomplish. 15$ = Slightly extended campign (Maybe 3 hours at best), skins, characters, and achievments... pathetic. I will admit it's certainly better than other DLC's *cough*CoD*cough*, but this all could have EASILY been included regardless of time constraints. They're just withholding the items and skins so you HAVE to buy them in order to use them. If the game already had the items and they just sold the extra campaign for a reasonable 400MS price I would be fine, but they're purposely luring you with "bonus" items to sweeten the deal when really it should, at best, only add an extra 2 dollars to the content. It's cheap, it's lazy, it's phony, and it's inexcusable. I'm done typing, goodnight. I expect a lot of backlash from fanboys, but you guys are alright... can't wait to read them. They always give me a good laugh!

@Javier @Duke_Nuk3m @feleas My point being I wouldn't be mad if this was anywhere between Free-400 MS points. That makes sense... also Severe from Dead Space 2 is another, very similar stunt pulled for video games you might remember that should have been in the game and probably was but decided it would be better and announce it right when everyone is about to move on just to extend the longevity a few more weeks... it's the same here and it's getting old, but of course I'm apparently the ONLY one who notices these things and get's trolled because of it.

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

@Javier @Duke_Nuk3m @feleas Well, I'm glad for the fact I got three responses that not only understood my claim, but didn't go all rage happy fanboy on my butt and use all caps to sound more "cereal". You guys do make good points, but I have to counter. 1. If they can fit the extra 5 chapters they added in the 1st game and somehow have it make sense than they can work around to having RAAM's backstory make sense. If the story is anywhere near as good as fan's say (Which it isn't, trust me) than I'm sure they can have that make sense as well, it's been done in other games. 2. If there is so much content to the game already... than WHY are people trading it in? Don't you think starting off with the original amount of content would have been a good idea? It's obvious this was made ahead of time and are just making you hold onto your copy a few months to get it. 3. I wasn't really rage happy typing as feleas thought but I agree I did probably come off that way. The reason I'm pissed is because they do this EVERYTIME with a game they say is "10/10 must get" but only lasts you 2 weeks at best for most. Deus Ex is another game doing this with Missing Link with a major 6 hours missing from the game campaign. And don't tell me it's all about time constraints as it took them over 3 YEARS to make this game only to play off the unfinished card barely a few months later for DLC.

Gears is a great game, but this money farming is quite... annoying, to not swear or anything. Epic's have so nerve to do that.

xSpcManSpiffx
xSpcManSpiffx

Yes. I'm sure Epic was like "Our fans are dumb enough to pay for extra stuff so lets stick it to em". It's called making money, smart one. The flow of money is what makes business work. It's simply business. Supply and demand. There is a market and they will take advantage. It's not evil. If you don't want it, don't buy it. That's the magic of capitalism, fanirama.

fanirama
fanirama

This is just greed releasing the expansion a mere 2 1/2 months after launch. Of course, they have everything ready and developed but want to stick it to the consumer. Pure American capitalistic greed at work here. They could've easily made it a part of the game, but not. Greedy bastards.
