Gears nabs 10 AIAS noms

Epic's shooter gets double-digit nominations for D.I.C.E.-related awards show, including Game of the Year; Oblivion gets eight, Twilight Princess gets six.

While Hollywood holds its breath for tomorrow's announcement of this year's Academy Awards nominees, gamers got one step closer to rolling out their own red carpet. The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS)--the gaming industry's equivalent of the Oscar-doling Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences--announced the nominees for its own award show, the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.

"I'd like to thank the Academy and the dude who made this gun. Free Tibet!"

Leading the way with 10 nominations is the multimillion-seller Gears of War from Epic Games for the Xbox 360. In addition to GameSpot's Game of the Year award, Epic may add the AIAS awards for Overall Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year, and Action/Adventure Game of the Year.

The second-most nominated game was Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with eight, and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess got six nods. All three games, along with Wii Sports and Guitar Hero 2, are in the running for Game of the Year honors.

The winners will be announced on February 8 in Las Vegas as part of the D.I.C.E. Summit. Jay Mohr returns to host the event, which last year awarded God of War with the evening's top prize.

The list of categories and nominees is below. For more information, head over to the AIAS home page.

Gears of war had to be the strangest, best, most intavated game i've ever played.. Expectially since it beat out halo 2 which was in my oppinion one of the best games ever. any what a list of games..

Gears Of Really Is The Best Achievement Of This Year, Since The Characters, The Levels, The Gameplay , And The Online Feature Are Very Well Created And Simply Is Totally Adictive. Go Epic. Bring The Second!!!

The LOZ: The Twilight Princess simply dont deserve to win over Oblivion, especially in the overall game of the year. Of course GeOW could win that award, instead. Sure the latest Zelda game is in the action/adventure category nomination list, but still it's a deceptively dumbed-down RPG game. So few variety in weapons, and whatever, and it was created from the ground up for the Gamecube, not the Wii, and Nintendo wanted to port it to the Wii for higher sales of it, and it is just simply too conventional by today's standards. If you've played Oblivion from the very start up to even for an hour or two, then you'll agree with me.

Dr_Swordopolis
Dr_Swordopolis

i understand GeOW is going to get nominated a lot. But it should not be in the category "Outstanding Innovation in Gaming", since everything about it has been done before. Sure, GOW has done it the best, but games like Wii Sports and Guitar Hero 1 last year are what innovative gaming is about. It's something never before seen; not something we've seen before that is slightly modified for the better.

Yeah, if you have to pay to be a member, that nullifies it as far as I'm concerned. I wouldnt even care if my favorite games won, awards that mean anything should come from a truly outside source.

I noticed that EA did not dominate in sports after monopolizing the football franchise. In fact, not a single football game made the list. This goes to show the craptastic quality they are putting into their innovation for sports. Wake up NCAA and NFL. Here is your proof of your mistake.

junk56: "this doesn't affect anything cuz it's not like the oscars or golden globe or anything. Nobody cares if it says: "10 AIAS AWARDS" on the box. Games are way more opinionated opposed to movies so award shows are pretty pathetic." You have no idea what the AIAS is don't you? AIAS is like the academy awards! if you win an award there, your game is awesome!

gears deserved it. i loved zelda, and oblivion too. they rocked although twilight felt kinda short. so many amazing games came out this year.

soulxxx wot do u meen god of war is GOW i have never refered to it as that in my life, besides that game is past it, gears should get around 5 of these awards and zelda should get around 3 or 4!

i'm not sure the male performances in gears was really that great, but other than that, yes, it should recieve many of these awards (seriously, the acting??)

Sirpapaya007

ouch to innovation. gears is an innovative game folks. Sure we've seen alot it has to offer in other games but fusing these together without a game being awkward and broken is innovation. People should be happy this game sells well, if only to continue to allow developers to create fresh ideas. I know alot of people who dont play shooters could be fed up, but this title isnt just another "shooter."

BigB10123

I am hoping for gears of war, chromehounds , compnay of heroes, battlefield 2142, and nba 2k7 to win in each of their categories. I never played oblivion but I haer its one sweet game.

You can tell that the awards are US based since FIFA 07 is nominated over PES6 where any football (not soccer LOL) gamer or lover nows that FIFA is nothing more than great menus, music and a bunch of licenses and PES6 is pure soccer, maybe next year with the renewed interest in MLS soccer txs to Beckham's transfer to Galaxy it PES7 will get proper recognition, and konami will claim it's crown with it PES/Winning eleven series as the world top FootBall simulation. BTW i agree with rennik regarding the lack of okami presence and aabout halo i think it not the best example of FPS tougth it's a top game it get beaten by CS:S, HL2, BF, Unreal, etc... Just my 2 cents

rennik_l
rennik_l

I sit here and read all these comments and I just have to put my 2 cents in. First off, you guys are getting way out of hand for an awards thing that in my opinion has NO credibility, it's not like GS or VGA. Second, Gears of War IS a great game, yes it is. Did it deserve the awards it's gotten? Yes, does it deserve the awards here? Most of them yes, not the innovative or art, but shooter and such. Is Gears of War over-rated? Not really, but it is a little... LITTLE bit overhyped. For art, my personal opinion says either FFXII or Viva Pinata should win that. As for the disapointment of Okami not being on here, yes, it should have been here for it's art. And I too, think Wii sports shouldn't be in the game of the year running, and I own a Wii. I think GeoW should get at least 5 of those awards, but I do honestly think Zelda should get the action/adventure being that Gears is technically a shooter. And for those of you who are talking about innovative shooters, don't forget System Shock 2. And if Bioshock is as good as it's saying it's gonna be, then it will seriously be innovative. Anyway that's my 2 cents, my opinions and thoughts. I will now patiently await the flamers. Just remember, this award thing has no real credibility, I had never heard of the AIAS until this article.

Soulxxx "NOPE. The only noms I'd give it are Outstanding Graphics, and Outrageously overrated. Strange that it's always Shooters for the XboX and 360... I wonder what it says about Xbox/360 gamers... I LMAO @ YOU!" We "lmao" at you too, because you're missing out on some great games. "Gameplay is boring!! looks boring, at least... reminds me of Halo, but at least in Halo you get to move while you shoot. here it's just- Shoot! Hide! Reload! Rise! Repeat until everyone in the level is dead! Go to the next level and repeat the whole process! What is so fun about that?!" The game plays NOTHING like Halo. The only similarity is that they're both on Xbox Live. If you seriously think Gears plays like Halo (when one has standard FPS controls, and the other utilizes a cover system along with "stop and pop" mechanics), nothing you say about Gears should be listened to. What's so fun about it? I dunno, I guess you should ask the millions of people who bought the game, and actually seem to like it. Personally, I thought single player was a blast, CO-OP on Insane difficulty was amazing, and as to no "replayability": Tell that to the hundreds of thousands on Live playing Gears... "It seems all the fanboys completely ignored a very important part of my post... I think it's a good game. Instead, they were too busy bashing me and probably the greatest game ever released." You clearly haven't really played Gears, so why bother making blanket statements about it at all? I haven't played God of War, but the fact that you call it the greatest game ever is probably a little much. I could just as easily say THAT game is overrated, and make up a bunch of half-assed reasons, just like you did for Gears. If you didn't enjoy Gears of War, or didn't play it, than I'm sorry for you, but a lot of people out there actually DO like it (and yes, just like a lot of people like your precious God of War).

IMHO Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction should go to Viva Piñata. That game was surprisingly good. The characters though wacky looking had a very unique look and feel to them.

To Soulxxx: Please stop being a God of War fanboy and begin to realise that people like Gears of War so much because they actually think it's that good. I mainly play first person shooters on the PC (a pretty hefty one, too, so i'm not short on graphics), and GoW is one of the best games I have played over the last 12months. Stop putting a game down when you haven't even played it. You appear to keen to promote a game that isn't even released, yet you choose to bad mouth a game many of us have played and enjoyed. We cannot prove that the game is better, because it is all a matter of opinion. Your opinion has been formed through devotion to one game and loathing for the hype surrounding another. Please comment once you've actually played the game, and don't use such a stupid tone.

Here's my original post for those who wanna know what this commotion is all about: ''''''''''''''''''''''''''First off, GOW is God Of War.. get used to it. no stupid shooter will steal the meaning of GOW. Gears of War is a good game (8/10) but nothing more... OMG People! Why are you letting all this hype blind you?! Gears of War is merely a shooter with outstanding graphics... there's absolutely nothing (!!!) innovative about it. Hiding behind walls and stuff?? I'm sure I've seen it before... the fact that you have to do it throughout the entire game is ridiculous! Healing your allies!? BATTLEFIELD 2!! What else is so great and innovative?! the cameras? Sorry... NOPE. The only noms I'd give it are Outstanding Graphics, and Outrageously overrated. Strange that it's always Shooters for the XboX and 360... I wonder what it says about Xbox/360 gamers... I LMAO @ YOU! Gameplay is boring!! looks boring, at least... reminds me of Halo, but at least in Halo you get to move while you shoot. here it's just- Shoot! Hide! Reload! Rise! Repeat until everyone in the level is dead! Go to the next level and repeat the whole process! What is so fun about that?! Makes me ******* sick. Can't wait for God of War 2... Kratos will pwn your asses... I dare anyone to show me why I'm wrong... I really want to see someone prove me wrong. """"""""""" It seems all the fanboys completely ignored a very important part of my post... I think it's a good game. Instead, they were too busy bashing me and probably the greatest game ever released. On a side note to those who said I should buy and play this game - Why would I want to buy and play this game? it's gonna grow old real quick! like every shooter out there! it has no replayability whatsoever. it's so overhyped like many people here say, why should I fall for it's outstanding graphics?? What am I a noob like you guys?? And I still didn't get a proof that I'm wrong.

GOW = God of War, in respect that the game was released before Gears of War. Anyway, that idiot that said Gears of War gameplay was boring should be ignored. Play the game yourself and judge. Relating to the story, i dont think GeOW should have gotten all those nominations...ESPECIALLY best male performance. Like wtf are these people smoking? Kingdom Hearts 2 not being nominated for family game of the year is sad. This list is horrible, when can we have awards given to developers that deserve them?

of course GoW was gonna be nominated a lot of times cause its a great game

CT-Link

In my opinion GoW simply has so many nominations cause it's a game that reinvented the genre, shooters weren't played like that, Halo taught us to run like crazy and be a happy trigger, but this game came out of nowhere, with amazing graphics, amazing gameplay, sound, the same old. BUT, other games like FF XII, TLOZTP, and others, are simply sequels of the same thing reinventing the flaws of the last one. Now, everybody that bought GoW cause of the hype, of course theyre not gonna like it, if you bought FF because its FF, its gonna let you down, obviously.

Doolum

So many nominations?

in short.....gears of war should not be nominated for all those categories... its a great game but there is nothing inovative about a FPS...the only FPS's that deserve any innovative awards should be Black and HL2: ep. 1 for being the firsts.... if u would just think for a second about wat the first fps like that was than u would all realize... oh and btw.....God of War fails in comparison to POP and TLOZ in all categories , its just an everyday lets hack em up game, and in my opinion it was boring

Insania_aeger

I'm a little tired with Gears of War already, and I'm not even done with the game yet (I played Hardcore.) From its repetition to its horrendous story that actually hurt the gameplay, I was embarrassed to show this off to my Wii-obsessed friends. And I was so damn hyped about it anyway!! Ah well, Crysis: don't let me down.

Gears of War is a really good game but I dont think it deserved that many awards. Graphically, it is the best game I've ever seen, but I didn't think it was THAT innovative. I know Soul was WAY out of line by saying that the game sucks or was overhyped, but he does have a point that the gameplay was not too far different from killswitch. I think it just improved on killswitch's sort of gameplay in every way. But GOW did deserve most of those noms. How was FFXII NOT nominated for story??? I also agree that Wii Sports shouldn'e be nominated for best overall game.

OK! Soul you know me, calm down. Soulxxx Thems is Fightin words and by that I mean there will be counter fanboy comments. I partially agree with you, in terms of gameplay innovations I can't really see how Gears changes anything significantly. But it is very fun, graphics are great and the game is very well made. Its kickass even, I haven't played it but I can't bash it because its on the 360 and its a Microsoft game. Now my opinions of Microsoft (not the Xbox itself) is a different matter and I will turn into Soulxxx quickly. I personally like to think this is Epic Games making a great game, not Microsoft. This game is great in many ways, but I do think hype for the game was a little overdone and the story from what I hear is not developed as it should. Soul is like many other people I meet, utter frustration for Microsoft itself has cause some prejudice and a little of a "the fanboyism that fanboyism produced" situation. Don't diss Soul, he's a good guy, just maybe a little out of touch in this situation. Gears does deserve 8 of these, but I think Oblivion should get at least 1 more. But I can't complain. Oblivion for game of the year!

im surprised that FFXII wasn't in my categories, especially GOTY, as it was an amazing game

gmayronne

okay, gears of war=really good game yeah gears of war is good, but true enough its not THAT innovative. its gameplay is almost exactly the same as killswitch for the ps2 and that came out like 4 years ago, what really make gears of war so appealing is obviously its graphics (in hi-def that game looks insane) and its gratuitous violence, i mean the story is "okay" but its not very descriptive and you have absolutely no idea who marcus pheonix really is and what the hell he did or has been doing, i guess it will take sequels to explain all that. overall its a great game even if it is just a tad bit overrated, which im sorry but it really is. the plusses, awesome graphics, great co-op, great sound, moody music, cool weapons. the minuses, one-way track levels, sometimes frustrating controls (trust me i have played this game up and down, beat it on INSANE by myself and still the controls to me can be a little sketchy at times), gameplay can get stale (once again, my meager opinion, so relax fanboys). i like this game, i just kinda laugh to myself when i see how blown up this game is, because lets face it, kids from the age of 15 and 17 are the ones really glorifying this game for its violence and obvious adult content
