Two weeks after Epic Games vice president Mark Rein announced that a major Gears of War 2 patch was en route, the fix is finally in. "Fixes" might be more accurate term because the update addresses dozens of problems, according to a post on the official Gears of War 2 forums.

"[The update] addresses a large number of multiplayer exploits and issues as well as makes some balancing tweaks, includes a couple of new features and even adds seven new DLC-based achievements," announced Epic Games executive producer Rod Fergusson. Four of the new Xbox 360 achievements, which offer a total of 175 gamerscore points, require the installation of the Flashback Map Pack. In an effort to curb secondhand sales, the map pack can be downloaded for free after redeeming a code in new copies of Gears of War 2. Buyers of used copies of the game can purchase the add-on for 400 Microsoft Points ($5)

A full list of improvements and fixes implemented by the Gears of War 2 patch, officially referred to as "Title Update 2," is below:

Improvements
Title Update 2 makes these new improvements:

* Changed Annex games to use execution rules, to prevent players from leaving DBNO opponents on the ground to bleed out.

* Made Horde waves count toward the "Party Like It's 1999" achievement. Each wave is counted as one round.

* Added the ability, during Submission games, to see the flag's final destination by using Tac/Com.

* Increased the frequency of most of the toasts for in-game achievement progression.

* Added achievement progression numbers to the War Journal.

* Added 7 new DLC-based achievements worth 175 points (progress toward them starts after Title Update 2 is applied):
--"Skeletons in Your Closet" (20 points): Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Flashback Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty).
--"Trial by, and on, Fire" (20 points): Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Combustible Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty).
--"More Mystery, Less History" (15 points): Win a multiplayer match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman).
--"The Roof! The Roof! The Roof" (15 points): Win a multiplayer match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman).
--"Bound by a Shared Past" (15 points): Win a Wingman match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps.
--"Forged in the Fire" (15 points): Win a Wingman match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps.
--"Annex: Now with Execution Rules" (75 points): Win an Annex match on each of the Flashback and Combustible Map Pack maps (Public only).

Exploit Fixes
Title Update 2 fixes these possible exploits, where under certain circumstances:

* A player could melee or grenade tag through certain walls.

* A player could equip a shield and a two-handed weapon simultaneously.

* A player could make their shield invisible.

* A player could become invisible.

* A player could do a "super" mantle or "kung fu flip," flying high into the air.

* A player could gain unlimited ammo with the Lancer Assault Rifle.

* A player could fire while roadie running (also known as "crabwalking").

* A player could pick up a weapon while sliding into cover.

* A player could walk forward while firing a deployed mortar.

* A player could force an opponent to be stuck in the down-but-not-out (DBNO) position.

* A player could prevent other players from picking up a heavy weapon.

* A player could pick up a dropped meatflag without having to knock him down.

* A ragdolled player could be killed without ever going DBNO.

* A player could roadie run while firing the Scorcher Flamethrower.

* A player could get stuck while evading, though they could continue shooting in any direction.

* A player could concuss themselves under the stairs on the River map.

General Fixes
Title Update 2 fixes these other issues as well:

* An issue with client-side hit detection of the Gnasher Shotgun. The fix makes the shotgun more reliable in high-latency situations.

* An issue where players could have shotgun or Boomshot rounds fire into the ground when shooting from the hip.

* A split-screen issue where one player transitioning to the death battle camera disrupted input from the other player.

* An issue that could cause players' Look sensitivity to be changed to their Zoom sensitivity while zooming in, zooming out, and firing.

* An issue that could cause players to get stuck if they tried to pick up a heavy weapon while firing the shotgun at the same time.

* An issue where players could become stuck if they kicked over a shield while ragdolled from a smoke grenade.

* An issue where bots were unable to kick over a shield that was planted backward.

* An issue where players who quit during voting didn't show up in the end game stats, which meant other players couldn't easily provide negative feedback on them.

* An issue where players couldn't chainsaw enemy meatshields if the meatshields were already damaged.

* An issue where some players would not see the animation of a meatshield being chainsawed.

* An issue where players could not chainsaw an opposing team meatshield in a game type that doesn't allow respawns (for example, Warzone and Execution).

* An issue where a player partway through the act of raising or lowering the chainsaw did not transition into a duel when attacked from the front with a chainsaw.

* An issue where occasionally a player waiting to respawn could not respawn when repeatedly hitting the left trigger to switch cameras.

* An issue where some teammates couldn't communicate between rounds in games type that don't allow respawns, because dead team members were left in the dead radio channel until the next round started.

* An issue where a DBNO player could be seen as standing if knocked DBNO while reloading the mortar.

* An issue where a player joining a Private Xbox LIVE game in progress from another specific type of game could potentially lose HUD functionality.

* An issue on the Flood map where a player's dying from Imulsion did not trigger a death message or penalize the player as other environmental deaths did.

* An issue with Guardian games where if the leader is the last player killed on a team, the round may not end, due to the respawn timer.

* A campaign issue where the gamer picture would not be awarded when the game is completed on Insane.

* An issue where a player would continue to fire the flamethrower and damage other players if that player was knocked DBNO while firing it.

* An issue that could cause a player to get stuck while moving and quickly attempting to aim the mortar at the same time.

* An issue with Horde games where clients didn't receive the "waiting for host" message after they failed a wave.

* A Horde split-screen issue that could cause a team to get â€"2 billion in score, which when posted to the leaderboards looked like +2 billion.

* An issue where dead players may not show up in the metadata for multiplayer photos.

* A system link issue where if a multiplayer match and a co-op game were hosted at the same time on the same LAN, neither could be joined.

* Additional miscellaneous bug fixes.

Balancing
Title Update 2 makes these balancing changes:

* Made planted proximity grenade mines much easier to shoot off the surface they're planted on, by giving them 50 percent less health.

* Set grenades to respawn less frequently. When a player picks up grenades from a spawned location, a new set of grenades does not respawn until the previous grenades have been used.

* Increased the penalty to rank for players who quit Public Xbox LIVE matches early.

* Buffed the flamethrower to have stopping power (to slow a charging enemy) and to cause a chainsaw interrupt (to force the opponent to lower a revved chainsaw).

* Removed the ability to instantly shoot coming out of a roadie run.

* Added additional spawn protection to prevent proximity grenade mines and chainsaws from killing a player within 5 seconds after spawning.

* Balanced grenade spawn cycling on the Hail map so that both teams have equal access to both types of grenades.

Anyone looking to get the Trial by, and on, Fire Achievement?? If so hit me up Gamer tag is PROT111.. I need this achievement but few seem to have the combustible maps..

I agree with mugensur. The only other thing i beleive needs to be fixed is the melee. It should do very little damage to no damage at all. The charaters are wearing a alot of armor (most of the time) and it is sad one hit from the side of a gun does much more damage than a bullet.

this update is BS didnt fix ish game still LAGS to the max ratio of lag free to laggy games is like 1:9 shotty still lags like WTF!!!!!!!! best game but this is just ridculous i've never had a game that is so good but is unplayable beause of lag EPIC stop rubbing eachother off and fix this i don't even like halo as much but im playin it cuz the bullets actually hit its destination in REAL TIME

They didn't do anything about the shotgun...it still sucks!! That's the only reason why GOW was better than the average shooter. Blind firing is horrible compared to the first one too. This is a game for noobs...getcha chainsaws ready cuz that's the only effective weapon in this game. GOW>GOW2

Increased the penalty for quitters?...they don't do anything, what are you talking about? Just like the glitches, they said the fixed them but they are still there. They just balanced the weapons(Messed the shotgun up, therefor every match boils down to go damn chainsaw duels and such things). Also, remember that not only losers quit. I quit when I end up playing a game mod I don't wanna play...if I wanna play execution I end up playing annex or submission(I don't wanna drag an old man around the field). No to mention lagginess, glitchers, stand by-ers, n00b attack(A boring match consisting of 5 guys who run with chainsaws, easy to kill them but a waste of time...I know, "but it could help rank up", no, because the god damn rank system it's broken anyway. The online it's alright, but they should've fixed most of the problems before release...same problems from gow1 are still here and with the new additions there are new problems. It's a good offline game tho, online it's a so-so.

Finally they increased the penalty for quitting players. Every time they quit it ruins the entire match for you. They need to work on the matchmaking part too because it takes forever just to play a single match.

My issue is with the flash back MP maps. After i downloaded them i couldn't system link anyway. They had better fixed that with this patch.

@ aserbianguy, seriously you think xbox360 is way better then the PC? why wont you go do your research first, where do you think they make games on? on your so called precious xbox? and the reason why console games are rated higher is because they usually come out first and when the PC version comes out a month or two later when every1 already played it, for the reviewer it seems like hes done this before. and its great that PC version comes out couple of months later because that gives them time to patch up the game and make it look better, so that you people don't have to complain about how buggy the game is. like GTA 4 for example, look how better it looks and works now since the xbox release.

Should've been fixed ages ago lazy buggers.I never really had these problems but there are still two glitches which are terribly annoying.The first off is when i have infinite bullets and run fast but can't hurt anyone it occurs when a round starts its really annoying and happens often.Another is if i pick up a heavy weapon i can't move,shoot or anything, tac com and looking at your score works but thats just useless. This is the funnest online game i've played but these glitches and terribly slow matchmaking really set the game down alot.If they just cracked down and worked on the problems and fixed it in 2 weeks or something that would've been acceptable but 3 months is beyond ridiculous.They had there millions what more could they want?

I was happy when host advantage was taken out but now.... now it just sucks.... It takes atleast and hour to find a good game and the shotty dosen't work as well for those in-your-****in'-face times were they would blow people to bits. I know that gears1 had the blow-a-face-off-from-20-foot-away with a shotty issue but just fix it so point-blank shots kill and I be happy not chain-sawing at point blank all the time.

Well that's too bad to hear, since the incredibly developer-friendly Xbox 360's version seems to have more bugs and problems than a PC version "ever" would anyway. Not to mention how much it's also been pirated.

Its sad to see even big game titles like Gears 2 being released so screwed up & even sadder to see them take their time releasing a patch after so many loyal fans snatched up copies of the game just to find out how lazy Epic had become.

it doesnt seem like they fixd alot. matchmaking still takes a long time. i only get into a good game maybe every 5 matches. its either a big lag. or people leave. i cant stand it. and i hear people talken crap on gears when all they can do is chainsaw. seriously the only people on gears 2 that talk crap are the ones that can only use a chainsaw. you can talk crap when u can 2piece me with a shotty buds.

Sort out lag, ie: dedicated server's ( US&EU and cross region ). And add more playlists like starting weapon is hammerburst or a longshot.

im glad they fixed the bugs but the gameplay online just doesn NOT work, host has way too much of an advantage, and I know they cant remove lag but, its still there.

Generic Dude, you are correct. If only the industry followed the lead on the AAA titles that you release bug free and perfectly balanced we would be in a much better state of gaming.

The sort of laziness that will kill this industry is the sort that encourages devs to release games that are unfinished, unbalanced or, in some cases, flat-out broken because they can just patch in a fix later on. This isn't a Gears-specific gripe, but given the fact that this is a sequel and not a new IP, these problems should have been surmounted and learned from years ago to begin with. Terrible.

OK, this sounds good. BUT, what about the host problem? huh? nobody did anything about it. I mean it is getting really frustrating when i have a good game and BAM! "Connection lost from the HOst". WHy can't they make an update where the system picks a new host if the original host quits. I don't mind waiting for a minute or two.

Wow, EPIC did something good, really good, might have to change my opinion on them and Gears 2 back to what they once were now... The fixed shotgun blind fire actually makes it more fun and counters the 'one hit, one shot' shotgunners effectively aswell as the chainsawers :D

After all the complaining and cheap tricks developed by gamers in the first Gears, this is really good news for fans and gamers like myself interested in playing Gears2. This kind of attention to detail is what makes the people at Epic okay in my book and actually gets me excited for future games from them ;)

It would've been a much better game if they took the mechanics from the original GOW and added a few new things...instead, they added a lot of crap! I'm glad this game didn't get nominated for Game of the Year. Maybe next time Epic will come out with a better final product.

It's funny how it takes forever to find a match because of this "same skill" system, and at the end you end up with 2 team members and the other team is full of high ranks.

I loved to tag frags on the face of these damn chainsaw-ers...Now I have to wait until my dumb partner uses the frags so I can get some?...I don't like the idea, weapon spawn shouldn't be balanced, if so, do the same with other weapons.

Matchmaking! If nothing else is fixed at least fix matchmaking so it is possible to get games on a timely basis. Balanced teams would be nice too.

I live in israel and Epic blocked the flashback map pack for israel and it's really sucks, fix this Epic!! what is the point of giving me new acheivments if I cant get them.!:(

Where is the keep the game from being 5 vs 3 update?? I was hopeful with this update but was totally disappointed when I got that first uneven match. Why can't the search system know when teams are uneven and just find a few more players to even things up before the game starts?? Thats what I really want in a update from Epic. Its a awsome game when its even, but when its not its just boring.

I don't care about multi-player in these games. I wish devs would support the single player more. They use to. Anyone remember the extra missions released for the original Splinter Cell? Kola Cell, Vselka Infiltration and Vselka Submarine I think they were called. These were three full single player missions. DLC was free back then too. I'd love if EPIC released a few more campaign missions. The campaign in Gears 2 is ******* awesome. Nearly as good as Resident Evil 4.
