Gearbox picks up Homeworld IP

Borderlands developer acquires franchise from THQ in bankruptcy auction for undisclosed sum, plans to create new games for digital platforms.

Gearbox Software has acquired the Homeworld franchise, the Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines developer announced today. The Plano, Texas company prevailed as the top bidder for the series during a recent THQ bankruptcy auction for remaining unsold franchises.

Terms of the deal were not specified and a Gearbox Software representative was not immediately available to comment. Gearbox outbid TeamPixel, which announced last week that a mystery party had offered more cash than it could for the series.

Writing in the Gearbox Software forums, community manager Chris Faylor explained that chief creative officer Brian Martel "personally spearheaded the acquisition." He reportedly has a "great deal of love and respect" for Relic's original Homeworld and Homeworld 2.

No new Homeworld games were announced today, but Gearbox said whatever it makes in the future will preserve the "purest form" of the original games while also making them accessible on today's digital platforms.

Bidding for franchises left unsold after the January auction--including Red Faction and Darksiders (which Crytek USA is interested in)--closed last week. As much as $7 million is expected to be generated from the sale of remaining THQ IP.

God how I loved Homeworld.   It was the first Space Opera game (RTS-wise) done right.

I am going to stay optimistic about this news, the homeworld name definitely could have fallen into far worst hands.

Your in my cross hairs Gearbox. Homeworld is a game very dear and close to my heart. You mess this up and create trash with the HW label on it and I will never forgive you... ever.

So is Gearbox going to treat this IP with the same respect and reverence as they did with Aliens: Colonial Marines?

I'm sorry, but GearBox is not the right people for this.

Homeworld had a quiet, sober feel to it, that made it feel like it wanted to be art. While GearBox has this loud "YEAH, We rock!" redneck feel to everything they do.

In other words, Homeworld is more like the best of anime, (like Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, which you can see below), and GearBox are the type to hate anime.

Love how people focus on a game companies lows rather than its highs.

So much overeacting on this. People need to calm down.

I really don't understand this. Why does Gearbox want Homeworld in the first place? Are they going to turn it into a shooter? Are they branching out into strategy? Still, at least they've committed to re-releasing Homeworld's 1 & 2 on downloadable stores.

The only thing good about this: the value of the old Homeworld games will go up!  Aside from that it's the Duke Nukem factor all over again.

Gearbox is going to ruin even this IP!

Gearbox paid $1.35 million for Homeworld IP, didn't know an IP is so cheap, if I knew, I would bid on Homeworld too.

Just stick to Borderlands. It's pretty much all you do right, nowadays.

I really hope the kickstarter team that was trying to remake this  just go ahead with the project anyway  & just give it a different name for copyright reasons.

I dont see any reason why thats not possible  as you cant copy right a genre.

Here's me, hoping that they'll leave the Homeworld IP rest in well earned, famous peace and not try to ride on this great franchise's name for a quick cashgrab title with forced online nonsense, DLC madness, microtransactions and pay to win multiplayer.

Should they ever touch this franchise and decide to make a sequel, it better be true to the original, with the still big fanbase's feedback taken into account.

Do not - i repeat - do not fuck this up, Gearbox.
Thinking about Aliens Colonial Marines still gives me twitches.

Gearbox has already ruined two 'once great' franchises. Here's another one for them to take a dump on.

Homeworld for the guys that made Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens Colonial Marines. and who make their main games boring intentionally so they could sell you the more fun canon DLC.

Well Gearbox...Why not give it a shot. I enjoyed Borderlands and Borderlands 2 so I know they can make some good games. Why not see what they can do with this.

@blackothh Gearbox doesn't have a good history with the exception of Borderlands.  They also did the Brothers In Arms series which was decent.  But they've recently had two major failures (DNF and Aliens Colonial Marines).  Plus they've never developed an RTS.  I would say Gearbox is not at the bottom but they are certainly not one of my choices.

@PodXCOM You talk about the "Best of Anime" and then post a dubbed clip?  This Wolf Brigade looks good, but now I must see it in Japanese.  Curse all dubbed anime.

LiquidGold

@PodXCOM I wouldn't say that "Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade" is the best of anime is kind of boring as well. Best = Akira, Devil-man, Golgo13, Ghost In The Shell, Ninja scroll, Goku Midnight Eye, Fist Of The North Star, Genocyber, Skyblue, Vampire Hunter D -Could go on all day def not Jin-Roh. Each to their own through bro. Least you like anime :)

@Darkmoone1 The only thing they made was Borderlands, and I thought it was stupid. Maybe fun, but stupid.

@Danny_KickAzz @blackothh everyone keeps bringing up duke and aliens. and i dont even care to consider them attempts at games.  in dukes case, any game thats been juggled around devs for 15 years is sure to get totally effed up. gearbox only had it for less then a year to do what they could to it. and for aliens, any movie game is almost guaranteed to suck, so i dont know what people were actually expecting from these 2 games.

PodXCOM
PodXCOM

@LiquidGold@PodXCOM

.... Wow! Thank you for naming all those cool anime.I haven't seen most of those ( I did see Akira, Ghost In The Shell, and Ninja scroll however), but maybe I'll take a look.

As for
Jin-Roh, I was going for a art thing, like Dune or Destination: Void. Art isn't so exciting all the time, after all. And Jin-Roh did started Killzone.

bloody-hell

@Thumbler76 I am and this makes me sad.

Stardock was also in the bidding for the Homeworld IP, but didn't quite make it in the end - at least they already had RTS experience, whereas Gearbox only did FPS so far.

I don't think this is going to end well, but for my own sanity I'll put my mind in denial for the time being, hoping that they won't screw it up.

Danny_KickAzz
Danny_KickAzz

@blackothh @Danny_KickAzz  Well I do agree with you in the most part, I feel AC:M was absolutely no excuse on Gearbox's part, reason being is that even though  the whole aliens series was based off a movie. Aliens vs Predator developed by our friends at Monolith Productions NAILED the aliens games. In fact so well many game developers today still take ideas from the game. If you haven't played the original you MUST get it from Steam! a very worthy buy if you got a couple bucks laying around. Anyways I haven't lost faith in GearBox to pull off Homeworld but im a lil skeptical on their ability? if that makes sense ha. *digs for Homeworld cataclysm*
