GDC '08: Game devs flock in record numbers

This year's Game Developers Conference breaks attendance records with more than 18,000 people walking through its doors.

SAN FRANCISCO--The E3 Media & Business Summit might be determined to downsize its previously mammoth video game show extravaganza, but it seems that every other event is just getting bigger than ever. The Tokyo Game Show, Leipzig Game Convention, and Consumer Electronics Show all reported their attendance being up over the previous year.

This year's GDC was no exception: 18,000-plus people attended this year's show, up from the 16,000 who popped by last year.

There were more than 400 sessions, booths from over 300 exhibitors and sponsors, and a new networking platform, myGDC, was launched for attendees this year.

GameSpot was on hand to bring gamers full coverage of the event, which included keynote speeches from futurist Ray Kurzweil, and Microsoft , which used the event to announce Gears of War 2. There were also packed sessions featuring Lionhead's Peter Molyneux talking about upcoming role-playing game Fable 2, the annual rants session, and a Portal Post Mortem.

Next year's GDC will return to San Francisco's Moscone Center and run from March 23-27.

They're going to be at SF again? Sweet. It'll give me a chance to go - I couldn't this year.

vance - Im not sure if that's how they came up with their numbers, but wouldnt it make sense to just count how many people registered for the event?

That number is false. I was there. They scan your badge for "head count" every time you walk in. So everyone gets counted like 10 - 15 times, depending on how many times you step out for a smoke or just to go outside and talk to a friend. So I wonder what the real number is.....

E3 was becoming a real monster, but I think that was good, because It was forcing game developers and publishers to show new and amazing ideas by that point in the year. I think there´s still no match for this expo.

Just hope they resolve the 'Shoot it 100 times in the head to kill it' scenario

Its a little off the mark to relate E3 and GDC. E3 is a press event, GDC is more like a week-long college for current and aspiring game developers. To be honest, the press really has no business at GDC, which is what the heads of the event are pushing for - to drastically limit the amount of press allowed into GDC.

GDC is a place for develeopers to share ideas and tricks of the trade, ask a bigger developer how they made a certain shader for a game, seek out tools to purchase or license for their future games, and for college kids to talk with the studios and apply for game industry jobs.

E3 was always about game releases and demonstrations of the game, and just hyping the latest and greatest product from the companies exhibiting their stuff.

If you were not into game development and went to GDC, outside the big keynote speeches and the game awards, you would be either lost, confused or just bored.

thenephariouson "just hope GOW2 doesnt suffer the same 'Extreme Overhype' as Halo!" As big of a Gears of war fan as i am, i too fear the worst but hope for the best. Although after seeing some of the stuff the new engine is capable i dont see how it could not get somewhat if not much better.

What did they expect? E3 going the way it is and all, someone has to pick up the slack.

Well,it's going to grow every year as gaming itself is doing the same.Another thing is..who wants to miss out on the introduction of Gears of War 2,Fable 2,and other great games if they get the chance? If I lived around there I would have went, too bad Chicago has like no game-related shows, meeting, lobbies,or anything at all...at least as far as I know.

I would absolutely love to go there for my b-day (March 24th) but I doubt I would be able to get out of college for it.
