GDC 07: Sacred 2: Fallen Angel First Look

The sequel to 2004's fantasy action role-playing game is going full 3D and will also appear on the Xbox 360.

2004's Sacred offered up a solid example of Diablo-style action role-playing. You controlled a fantasy character and then hacked and slashed your way through the story, becoming even more of a death dealer along the way. Even the game's 2D visuals seem inspired by Blizzard's seminal classic. With Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, German-developer Ascaron hopes to update the series with a new engine and other enhancements while keeping the hack-and-slash nature of the gameplay.

Sacred 2 is being set 2,000 years before the events of the first game, so it's going to be a prequel of sorts. You'll once again be able to choose from up to six different characters, representing different genders and races. Four of these characters will have good and evil paths, so you can play them either way, while the remaining two will either have a dedicated good or evil path. Since each campaign is about 30 hours, that amounts to about 300 total hours of gameplay if you play each campaign.

You will once again roam around a large virtual world, slaying all manner of monsters left and right and pursuing up to 650 side quests, only in this case the world is going to be much larger. It's also in 3D for the first time, and one of the interesting things about Sacred 2 is how the game is being optimized for the Xbox 360 and PC. For instance, the Xbox 360 version will take advantage of the system's three CPU cores to offer up better visuals. One core will handle the game itself, another will take care of the special effects, while the third will be responsible for streaming the game's content so that there are no level loads. So the Xbox 360 version will feature advanced features such as fluid dynamics. Think of your character kicking up leaves into the air and then those leaves swirling about realistically in the wind. The PC version won't feature that because Ascaron says that you'll need a quad-core CPU, and those aren't widely available.

There's are a lot of promising features in the game. Randomly generated NPC behavior is one example, so if you play the game multiple times, you won't get the exact same reactions from the characters twice. Also, each class has its own exotic animal mount, ranging from a tiger to a flying dragon. There will be multiplayer support with cooperative play throughout the campaign, as well as player-versus-player gameplay. Then there's a dynamic weather system, along with time-of-day effects, and more.

Ascaron plans to launch both versions of the game simultaneously, but that's something that's not going to happen for a while, as Sacred 2 is currently scheduled for release sometime in the first quarter of 2008, so it's still a year away.

Holy Crap! I think that this may be the biggest pc game that i'll be looking forward too. Over 300 hours of gameplay! Are you kidding me!

The supposed "gore" was just loot getting knocked out of the enemy. There won't be any gore in Sacred 2, at least not like how it was in the first Sacred. Most likely things were toned way down to make it decrease the rating level and make it more marketable. Too bad, the gore in Sacred was beautiful. Blood squirting everywhere in realistic spurts and limbs getting sliced off with the bodies limping or flailing around until they died. It never got old and will be missed. I know Sacred 2 will have some sort of "Gore Feedback" thing but all you see even in the latest videos are little blood squirts that wouldn't even be cencored on Nickelodeon.

Sacred was the first hack'n'slash rpg i've enjoyed since the original Diablo. I sure hope this one turns out alright. But what the hell is this **** about PC's not being able to handle that stuff? Hmpf. When this game is released, it wouldn't suprise me if Quad Cores are quite common.

The Xbox 360 needs more RPGs and I liked the original Sacred for PC so I'll rent this one first.

I have to agree with 94! Dumbing down the PC version is just BS.. Ascaron, you let me down! Quad cores not widely available.. pfft.. they have been out since the first news story about the Dell Renegade. Which was what a year ago?! Please! Too bad too.. since I was really REALLY looking forward to this game. If its gonna be another Deus Ex: IW then I don't need it! Guess there is always another hack n slash RPG around the corner ... best to move on.. :/

Yes...so Crysis can handle a 2 year old PC but this piece of **** can't. Give me a break....more and more developers are getting paid to shoot off their mouth or what? We don't even get optimization for Dual Cores properly and now this. Hilarious.... Maybe developers should start developing and stop talking. It would be more efficient.

awesome..... i really enjoyed sacred, ill probably buy this for 360.... im just worried about multiplayer functionality in the 360. It was cool on PC cuz me and my bro shared different PC's, i cant imagine split screen on sacred 2 (our tv is small X_X), even if the multiplayer shares the screen, there probably will be a constriction to movement.....

"Think of your character kicking up leaves into the air and then those leaves swirling about realistically in the wind. The PC version won't feature that because Ascaron says that you'll need a quad-core CPU, and those aren't widely available." That's a crock... I'm not buying this one now. They're too lazy to implement the features on the PC that are on the console. By 2008, PC's will outstrip the 360's by a mile.

I really liked Sacred on the PC. I think bringing it to the 360 is a brilliant idea. I can't wait.
