GC 2008: Fallout 3 Hands-On

With a new, almost-complete build of Fallout 3 on show at Leipzig, it was only fair to take another trip to its postapocalyptic Washington, DC.

Although we've seen Fallout 3 quite a few times in recent months, the development team is still remarkably open when it comes to letting us see more. They don't shy away from letting us explore the open-world game in any way we like, which is why we glean even more information every time we sit down to play it. With the news that the full game will ship on October 28, we went to see the game in its almost-final state to find out more.

If you haven't read our previous coverage of the game, then make sure you head over to our previews section to get a bit of a background on its story. Our demo started with us once again exiting the bunker that our character had called home for his entire life, only this time we headed in a completely new direction and tried adding different skills.

On the advice of the Bethesda spokesperson watching over our soldier, we headed down to a small house to the left of the bunker and opened the door. Inside was a woman who was an ex-prostitute, and who was now unfortunately addicted to drugs. She asked if we were here to collect some money on behalf of her pimp, and given that we'd upgraded our persuasion skill at the beginning of the demo, we decided to say yes. She handed over some credits, and to continue on our dark side, we inquired about whether she was still working as a "lady of the night." She declined and said that part of her life was over. (It had seemingly been replaced with her addiction to hard drugs.) Just to see what happened next, we shot at her, and though she put up a brief fight, we eventually managed to kill her, although we lost some karma as a result. Actually, the above makes us sound pretty cruel, but who knows--maybe Leipzig's just beginning to take its toll.

We encountered some new enemies after leaving the house: huge insects such as the bloatfly, as well as new armoured human characters called raiders. We used the VATS system (see previous coverage) to take out most of the enemies that we came across, and then played around with stealing more of the things that were left behind. One of the raiders was wearing a hockey mask for protection, and we were able to remove it from the dead body and wear it ourselves. You can press the left bumper to switch to a third-person view, and you can then use the right analog stick to tilt around your character to check out the view from the front.

After making it through the Meresti Trainyard and its abandoned train wrecks, we came across the outskirts of a small settlement. The problem was that it was protected, and we were immediately shot at by a sniper upon entering. We spun around and tried to use the VATS system to hone in on the sniper, but we couldn't see them, and they'd soon incapacitated us via our arms and legs. When we reloaded the game, we decided to head back and check out the school that was not too far from the starting bunker. The building had been torn apart, but a number of books and chalkboards remained complete, with writing from children and teachers. Underneath the school, a small dungeon with a number of raiders awaited, and we were able to pick up a sawed-off shotgun as a reward for heading inside.

We love that we keep finding so much to explore in Fallout 3, but each visit to its postapocalyptic landscape is never long enough. Luckily the full game is out on October 28, so we only have a little longer than two months to wait to start exploring every nook and cranny.

Indeed rotiv415, there are too much good games coming out, gears 2, fable 2, dead space, saints row 2, farcry 2 etc... But I allready preordered Fallout 3 Collectors Edition:D. A shame that that Amazon version, with the pipboy 3000, isn't PAL...:( otherwise I would have gotten that one...

If I can still use and murder prostitutes, like in the previous games, I'm far on my way to happy. It's kind of standard operating procedure... Yay for happy-go-lucky games!

The depth of gameplay involved in simply deciding what to ask the ex-prostitute to get money from her and such makes me wondered how the overall effect of karma will have on your outcome of the game. Can't wait!!

cru3, By "Perfect" I mean to say that the core gameplay will live upto everyone's expectations, and that is very possible. I also mean to say even though people don't like some aspects of the game, they won't at least say that it's "bad".

I'm really excited about this, Fallout was the first RPG I ever did and, with much respect to other RPG's, is still the best I ever played. The game is just soo big, it's allways giving you different situations to deal with. So I hope this game will give us all that old Fallout feeling again:)

Nothing will ever be "perfect" when everyone has such different expectations of what perfect actually is for a game.

Please Bethesda, do not make the player animation shabby and look like as if he or she is sliding (like in Oblivion). We want this game to be perfect. Please dont let your fans down.

i am so amped for this game. i really cannot wait for this. im sitting here thinking how awesome this game is gonna be. i personally think that V.A.T.S is a good idea. CANT WAIT!!!!!!

from the previews and videos the game looks amazing, to be honest i never felt comfortable with games using the first person point of view, and though i've missed on games that looked awesome using this viewpoint the last game i played (and finished) that used it was Jedi Outcast (w/c switched to 3rd person when holding the lightsaber!) and the first half life. I did manage to play oblivion (my bro purchased the game) but had to stop midway through because it was giving me headaches (literally) everytime i played it. so im happy that this game also has a third person viewpoint. and am hoping that it can be played entirely in 3rd person (i dont mind going 1st person point of view during dialog/conversations) BTW am a great fan of the orignal Fallout 1 & 2 so I'm looking forward to playing this game! two more weeks and we'll see if it lives up to the hype :D

I dont mind the vats system, its not like you have unlimited times to use it, you have Action Points to use. And like you said its good you dont have to use it, but im almost positive everyone who says they dont like it wil at one time try it and keep using it, especially when things get crazy:P

Game looks awesome...I how ever dislike the VATS system...its just not me. Good thing it doesn't have to be used :D

I've never been so hyped for a game since halo3, this looks amazing. This has some stiff competition but for me GOTY!!!! Thank you very much. And thats a bold statement considering the amazing titles its up against just for the xbox alone, Fable 2, Farcry 2, Gow2 but to name a few (Gta4), just noticed there are quite a few no 2 games out. Weird and they all look great. What a bumper time for gaming this will have to go down in history as an amazing year for AAA titles. Bring it on. Well a very expensive one at that.

Thats very good knifey.. telling him to think it over before posting it.. ill give you a little quote.. maybe you can see your own mistake ^^ "I want this game soooooooooo bad that's it's not even funny." If you add a comma between bad and that's then it should be correct.. Already preorderd the game and cant wait to get to see the world and everything in it!

darkblade321 you haven't even played the damn game yet how can you say it won't be funny when you haven't even played it you can't really think about what you say before actually putting it in

1) Farcry2 = First person SHOOTER 2) Fallout 3 = First person RPG They are not the same genre so GROW UP

solatron
solatron

wouldnt it be nice if they were to include a isometric view like its previous games.. its like having 3 different views. First person view, 3rd person and isometric view..ya i know its almost impossible to have all 3 =P

Robertwelsh2

The incorporation of a co-op mode in a RPG (Fable 2) would be a rare experience, but in the case of Fallout 3... it would just be ridiculous. The game is just so big, and there are more than 200 NPC's who make up for the loss of another Human player. Otherwise its just not the Bethesda way (look at its previous games), I'm sure either way it will be a fantastic game. I'm really looking forward to it.

get far cry 2, it'll be a lot better.

I want this game soooooooooo bad that's it's not even funny. This is the first game that i'm getting for the fall season and gears 2 will be 2nd. My third is a tie for either far cry 2 or call of duty: world at war... someone help me decide..?
