GC 2008: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Updated Impressions - Co-op Play

We check out the co-op play in EA's latest real-time...wait, did we just see dolphins with rocket launchers on their backs?

Leipzig has been good to EA's newest entry in the Command & Conquer series, Red Alert 3. On Wednesday, the company announced a host of big-name acting talent (such as Tim Curry, Kelly Hu, and Jenny McCarthy) who will be starring in the fan-favorite cutscenes that provide the story line for the game. Today we got a chance to see another aspect of the game: a demonstration of the cooperative multiplayer missions that will be available throughout the game's single-player experience.

Co-op play looks to be a huge part of Red Alert 3; in fact, all of the solo missions in the game will be playable cooperatively with a friend. Because the missions are designed with multiple commanders in mind, even if you're playing a mission solo, you'll have a friendly AI commander on your side with whom you'll need to coordinate your tactics.

For today's purposes, we watched as two human players went through a Soviet faction mission, whose ultimate aim was to take down a science facility being used by the Allied forces to research experimental technology. Doing so, however, wasn't simply a matter of building up units and rushing the gates; thanks to some clever restrictions, it was immediately apparent that only cooperative strategies between the two players would result in victory.

The main restriction was an enemy doohickey known as a technology inhibitor, which limited the types of units each player could produce in their individual HQ. One player could only produce land units like transports and troops, the other was limited to battle helicopters. The first step to strategic success was to establish ore-mining operations on nearby islands. Each island featured very different defense structures; one designed strictly to deal with land units, the other decked out with antiair weaponry. Naturally this was the first point where cooperation kicked in; with the player with the battle copters sending in his forces to take out the ground weapons, and the player with the ground units looking to take down the antiaircraft tech.

With those island defenses clear it was time to set up new bases. To do so, you use Sputniks--which can travel over land and sea but do so very slowly and don't stand much of a chance against an enemy. To keep things moving quickly, you can request that the player with the flying units transport the Sputnik across the water and drop it off on the next landmass.

You can also set beacons to signify areas you need destroyed by an allied player. In the example we saw, one player set a beacon at a nearby island; once the helicopters gave a fly-by to eliminate the fog of war from the area, the ground troops were able to attack the antiair guns on the island with long range weaponry and prepare that island for an all-out assault. The final attack on the tech inhibitor featured both players working together--with the battle copters airlifting troops into the area, resulting in a quick and effective victory.

Though the gameplay is still being tweaked, Red Alert 3 producers told us that the game will provide a challenge for experienced players and capable AI allies if you can't find a friend to join you in the fray. That's great news, as is the game's gently mocking take on the RTS genre. After all, it's not every day you see enemy units in the form of enlisted dolphins, who fight wearing vests strapped with high-tech weaponry. The way we see it, heavily armed, fightin'-mad dolphins are why video games were invented in the first place. Look for more on Red Alert 3 in the near future.

It's to bad that they are ruining the game with the worst DRM since StarForce. They hurt the custumer and treat them like criminals while the pirates the DRM is suppose to stop simply crack and disable the DRM. The only people EA is hurting with their ever increasing copy protection is the custumer who buys their games and pays their paychecks. I refuse to buy this or any game that EA releases that hurts the custumer. They hurt the people who actually buy their games while the pirates who they are trying to stop are not affected by the DRM. If anything EA's DRM policy promotes piracy by making the pirate's versions better then the store bought ones. This causes many of the people who buy the game to download the pirate's cracks. With a crack the game doesn't require a CD in the drive, doesn't require online registration, and has no install limits or spyware. Once they understand that they are causing people to download cracks by making the retail version worse, they will stop hurting the people who buy their games. Intill then the only thing companies like EA understand is a boycott. Don't buy any game that hurts the custumer like this one does.

There should be an option to play with friend/AI or alone.

hmm this game could sway either way. If it lives up to previous ra games it should be MASSIVE!. but if they put too much work into changing a system that wasn't broke then it could turn out bad, really bad. Fingers crossed its EPIC!

too bad there is no westwood... rts with practically no single player would be a miss... and i think they crossed the thin line set by ra2 betwen fresh irony and dull studpidity. that was absurd, but fun, almost stupid, but ALMOST. it had a feeling, that it could actually happen. but now they give japan and transformers. for me it doesn't seem right. and i do not quite know what is the coincidence between einstein and japan. ra2+yr was the best rts ever. i afraid ra3 would be only a mid, forgettable game and you will feel a bad taste of what it could be....

Oh no. Every single SP mission will be with an AI ally? Every single mission will be a long, frustrating babysit, where you have to rely on retarded AI to progress in the mission. Great, apearently EA now considers players to retarded to even use combined arms tactics by themselves. Newsflash: We don't need an AI to help us out, we will just fine by ourselves. That's why RTS's have control groups. Beacons? Wow, that's innovative... Still it might work, but only if the AI is smart enough not to go in a straight line that gets them blown up, or if we can set up beacon-waypoints, and at that point, might as well have direct control of the AI.

Yes you will be able to play online co-op just like it says in the article.. I've always like RA games better then mainstream C&C games so this is exciting. The dolhins are nothing new they are in the older games tho i think they just used sonar before to knock out subs and ships. i hope they bring the sweet soviet krackens back too.

xyboink
xyboink

it is now more realistic strategy game. And the AI is better than the previous C&C-games. I hope that there will come a strong battle and that the enemy is not too stupid to do something (fe sending a varying soldiers and not repeating group) with the addition of a friend player; it is more fun to play with this game.

Are we going to be able to go online to find Co-Op partners?

Capable ? Err.. there are so many CAPABLE DEFINITION in a gaming era Capable to build... Capable to manage some cash... Capable to die... Its all CAPABLE AI But EA is the most largest famous & largest game developer in the world & since this game will COMPETE with so much competitively with SC2... I still BELIEVE the game will at least provide the player with SAME ambience & fun from the famous C&C RA 2 !!! In an RTS game... its more important to have MUCH MORE CAPABILITY to sustain any player ORDER properly (at least with better pathfinding thing) & survive too I called that... CAPABLE ! Don't forget that these or next year.. these game will BE GREATLY challenged with DoW 2 & SC 2 from other famous RTS maker too (so I hope this game will be so GREAT in player's AI development)

Oh no... co op ??? Co op with AI ??? AI designed by EA AI division ? Are they the SAME AI division from other EA rts gaming division ? Wow... judging from FIFA series, NBA series, NFL series, NHL series, and C&C TW 3 & its exp... wow this game will be so very very (once again) VERY FRUSTRATED since all these Allied AI can do just wander around or clashing around when u need them most I got a very very (once again) VERY BAD FEELING when I heard that there are a lot of RESTRICTION to allowed more COOPERATION between player & AI/other player Its look like these game will be only PLAYABLE if u have any friend that want to finish the campaign COOP-ly since all of AI capability in almost any of EA game is down to TOTALLY ABSOLUTELY BRAINLESS.. at least to keep therself alive during chaotic battle I hope we can CHOOSE what type of restriction will be... since I don't ever like to play an RTS game with just capability to create all TRANSPORT unit without any capability to build any offensive power while the allied AI get that ability or truly offensive unit then... Using GUIDE BEACON is proved disastrous in almost any game since the AI will usually hard so many difficulty to manage a complex pathway to its supposedly destination Hell yeah... even the preview doesn't show HOW WELL THE ALLIED AI capable to keep the pace with player advancement, support player strategy SMARTLY & PROPERLY & help the player in any kind of any situation RAPIDLY! These Allied AI should play with SUPPOSEDLY DESIGN TO HELP THE PLAYER since I believe the main protagonist & superstar in this game is THE PLAYER !!! I hope the Player's ALLIED AI will be far more much GREATER & BETTER & most important... never burdened the player with additional baby sitting task & keep alive mission again & again during rampaging battle (especially since there are some DISASTROUS DESIGN... like rocket launcher dolphin ? wow... not its just exposed the dolphin about its position but its very ABSURD design too compared with sonic ray dolphin from RA 2 thats more SMARTly designed & don't forget about our ANIME-esque sailor suited Yuriko Omega ? wow... with sailor suit compared with so charming & myterious Yuri from RA 2 ? apparently this girl need some guidance cuz I believe she is lose & stranded during her trip to school apparently... plus with her suite like that, she is SUPPPOSEDLY a sitting duck for target practice during the battle in wood or any dark places because of his SUIT design) Truly hope this game will AT LEAST live with its predecessor prestige & named Aka C&C Red Alert 2 !!!

Looks like they ripped off a KMFDM picture for the box cover. I have a feeling this game will be too over the top and/or cheesy to the point where it makes you cringe.

It sounds a little over the top with the dolphin units and other "funny" things they've added, but RA has always done crap like that... who's to say it'll take away anything from the game experience as a whole? I'm sure it'll be great. And if not, then boo-hoo.

"If the AI is totally shoddy then EA will hear about it and never stop hearing about it until it's fixed. Otherwise this sounds like a pretty cool way to play the campaign." Im sure if theirs anything wrong with it EA will fix it. just like they did with The First Decade...oh wait.

Wait a sec weren't there any dolphins that had sort of sound beams on there back in Red alert 2? why change it to rocket launchers? Anyway.. Ive played the Beta and i really disliked most of the things..

Ok I guess I was biased in my opinions. I just hope it's not again a power generator, then barracks, then air field and experimental lab. And at least it's not some bald guy who seems to escape from a super weapon attack and tries to start a war again.

I would have to disagree with you Raymond. I don't think it matters about the amount of maps or races or units or whatever, it's about the uniqeness and quality of each. I will GLADLY play a game with only 3 races that are entirely different, in fact I would chose that game over one with 10+ races that only vary slightly.

you ask for to much RA1 is the best thats it, but still enjoyed 2 and xpansion, and ill still enjoy this one no matter whats new or the same... shouldnt be picky

raymondcs123

They could use something newer.... Dow had 2 new races per expansion and extra maps and units. RA3 has only one new faction with new units and maps. And I mean it's over a decade, I seriously expect something new from the unit sounds. (Listen to the trailer, it's the same as RA2) Flame me all you want.

The dolphins were already in RA2. The coop sounds interesting and I'll be interested to see how it turns out. A nice new touch. And yes; the AI had better be good.
